After talking to a friend that has a cassette potty but doesn t use it. I started wondering what others do. So here is the poll.
tlhdocOur thinking is that our pop-up is a kitchen (among other things). Going in the kitchen is not in the least appealing to me.
There have only been a few campground bathrooms (out of a hundred or more) that have made me wish I had a porta-potti.
Austin
tlhdocI agree with AustinBoston about going in the kitchen so we walk to the campground restrooms. Only once have the facilities been questionable and that was only because the raccoons used the toilets to wash their food. [: (] Sometimes the walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night makes me think a porta-potti would be nice, but after two plus years we still have not purchased one.
tlhdocIt depends where I am, at the time..........................
I figure as long as it is not in my pants, it s all good![:D]
tlhdocI think of our PU as a bedroom ~ not gonna use the toilet in there either!
With 4 small kids I thought about a porta potty, but I m happy to report that on our last outing no midnight runs were made to the CG bathrooms. If we can make it through when they are this young I think I ll skip the porta potty...(and yes the 2-year old is toilet trained)

Forget the kids, after several beers *I M* the one who has to make a couple midnight potty visits. The cassette potty is the most treasured feature in our trailer [8D]. Although now looking at the list, a tree would suffice for me, but not Mrs. Sacto.
tlhdocNot wanting to start anything here, BUT isn t using a tree worse than throwing the dish water out instead of dumping it properly?
Just wondering what your thoughts are?
I know some people who used the closest tree every night, I asked them if they would like to stay on a site where everyone did that? They now walk to the bathrooms.

Gary, you do, you just don t know it.. Where do all the animals go in the woods. You are an animal, I bet your wife tells you that all the time.[:D]

My comment was tongue-in-cheek. Of course, site size, general popularity of the campground, and just plain good judgement would dictate whether I would take a leak outdoors. Most likely it wouldn t be at the campsite but somewhere way back in the brush or woods. So, that s why I use the cassette potty.
Some interesting reading (beware for those with a sensitive stomach and probably inappropriate for children).....

tlhdocwithout getting too graphic... #2 in the cg bathroom, and #1 in either place depending on the circumstances, but more often than not, its in the cg bathroom.
tlhdocSactocamper, wasn t really picking on you, thought your comment may have been in jest, but it got me to thinking and remembering what happened with these other people AND the famous grey water threads!!!
Obviously there are times hiking and camping when the nearest tree is the only thing available. Imagine getting to your site and having the kids play in the only " mud" puddle around and it happens to be behind a nice tree!

Yep!

Good point. Discretion and good judgement should always be used, but those definitions tend to vary from person to person. So when in doubt, pee in the campfire! [8D][8D][:D]. Totally kidding with that one.
tlhdocEspecially if you are cooking over it at the time, it imparts a peculiar flavor and aroma!
I think this is getting out of control!!!
garym053Garym053,
Quoteremembering what happened with these other people AND the famous grey water threads!!!
I remember these threads, If I am on the right thread I was one of those people having a discussion on the grey water. Because of that discussion I now use grey water cans. I was educated, I do beleive to some respect that nature can take care of a lot of this mess and does. With respect to your needs, I do know what you are refurring about with one camper in and one out. Yes we do need to keep the area better then when we moved into it. AND I MEAN ALL OF US![:o]
tlhdocYou are right, Whitestar505! Because of those threads, I bought a bigger wheeled blue tote and modified a tractor funnel so I could more easily dump my dishwater without spilling it on the ground!
tlhdocWe LOVE our CP/shower. It s especially great during the night. We have two girls so it s a relief to have a CP. My DH usually uses the CG bathroom, while the three of us (girls) use the CP. Although, during the day, I do limit the CP uses and we try to use the CG potty as much as possible, especially in certain cases if you know what I mean. For my 3 year old, I d much rather her use the CP in the popup than some of the campground bathrooms we ve seen. We don t cook in our pu, we do outside cooking, only exception are the few times we might use the microwave. We keep the lid on the CP closed when not in use and the shower curtain pulled and closed around it. I bought a spray that doesn t mask orders but gets rid of them and I also keep clorox wipes to keep that area clean. Honestly, our pu smells great, but I am particular about how we keep the CP/shower area clean. At night before going to bed we all take showers, washing away bug spray, etc. I don t let the kids go back outside once they re clean. They crawl into the bed. Our pu smells really good after showers with the shampoo and soap smell. I d have to say I wouldn t want another pu without the CP/shower combo. It s great!
tlhdocWhile I have thought occasionally a cassette potty would be nice - for tent camping, it might be usable in the vestibule - we never bought one. We have no space in our PU for one even if we thought it an attractive idea- we have more floor space in the tent! So campground facilities are the answer - except for the pee funnel & bottle for some nighttime " calls" , PUing, or tenting. ( Of course backpacking it s a whole nother subject.)
tlhdocI think at this point I could not live without my [link=http://www.title-3.com/potti.htm]Porta Potti[/link]. We set it up in a tent next to or behind the rear bunk. It is great for thoselate night nature calls.
tlhdocMaybe, If there is a benefit to having Sleep Apnea and being on a CPAP machine at night, this is it! I no longer have to get up during the night! It was 2 or 3 times a night, now I sleep through until about 6:30 or 7 am. BUT don t slow me down on my way to the BR then!!!
tlhdocI guess I ve tent camped and hiked in the woods so long that I just don t care! Anywhere someone else can t see me is fine and dandy...behind a tree or a real potty...doesn t matter! ;>
tlhdocWith my coleman Taos, I wonder if a porta potti really would fit in the " porta Potti cabinet" listed on the web plans for this unit. The cabinet seems too small for anything comfortable.
For the authoritative camping outdoor bathroom guide, check out " How to Sh*t in the woods: An enviromentally sound approach to a lost art" by Kathleen Meyer. It s a lighthearted but serious book about the subject.
As I remember, basically, urine is sterile unless you have a bladder infection so it s enviromentally OK to go anywhere (not too close to a water source) of course in terms of society s norms, well CG toilet is probably best. Excrement is a much different story and there are lots of rules and guides... better to use the GC toilets.
Grey water... I ll have to look at those links. I would guess that if you re using bio degradable soap, toothpaste, etc... but as a chemist for the flavor and fragrance industry, I know that labels are not the best indication of what s really in the product. I intend to carry it out.

tlhdocWE have one of those little thingys that look kinda like a round cooler, or a footstool, and when you remove the lid there is a bucket inside that you line with plastic bags. The bucket also has a toilet seat. We put it in the AAR, (now have one of those tent jobs) and it s used for liquids only, at night. In the morning I tie the bag and it gets deposited into the dumpster.
I have trouble getting thru a whole night, and my arthritis makes walking on uneven ground in the dark fairly difficult, so this is mostly for my use. DH usually goes to the cg bathroom.
Georgehave a hybrid have a bathroom on board
GeorgeEverytime I read the title of this thread I laugh because my brain autamatically thinks, " In the bathroom, silly" [:D]
Actually until this year we used the CG bathroom. At the Rally one of our very nice PUT members gave us a porta-potty. I m not sure if it s the cassette style or not, but it sure helped me out! After my experience emptying it, I know we ll reserve the use of it for emergencies or late night use only, and ONLY for liquids!! One of my DS used it every time he had to go!
I don t have a problem with boys/men going outside, as long as its in a discreet place, and you KNOW nobody is going to be playing around there, like a poison-ivy patch!! [;)]
GeorgeMake Lee empty the potty.[8D]
You have a porta potty, the cassette potties are built in.

Believe me - I tried. He said, " I didn t use it" Plus I didn t think it would be such a big deal! I was wrong! [&:]

I m with ya on that point, George!! [:)] As Griffin gets closer to potty training, I ve been thinking about getting one for him in the middle of the night, but Dave is set against it. He has assured me that he ll be the one taking Griffin to the bathroom if he wakes up and needs to go. I predict that when that time comes....we ll be buying a porta-potti after the first night! [;)]
tlhdocI have a big toilet...I have a small wet bath with real walls. I am a BIG girl
Big girls do not equal small wet bath with paneled walls even if it has a big hereford and flushes into a holding tank.
GeorgeI had to convince hubby of 2 purchases, the Add a Room and the Porta potty. Now he can t imagine camping without either one. The AAR becomes the " master bathroom" after dark with the flaps down. He doesn t even complain about emptying it! What a perfect life I have!
GeorgeI have a Hybrid with a real bathroom too, but we only use it for #1... The #2 and showers are done at the campground facilities. I suppose in an emergency (like at Trap Pond when the niece was sick) we will use it for the " forbidden" needs!![;)]
tlhdocI couldn t survive (at least with dry pants) without my porta potty! I thought it kinda gross of having the toilet next to the kitchen and out in the open when I was arranging the cabin but once I built " the bathroom" it didn t seem to be bad at all. However we do use the bath house for those ummm....how do I put this delicately[:o]..those serious bathroom needs [8D].
