Title: My testing results
Post by: ShirleyT on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
I have read all the posts, gotten several emails, checked websites about how to deal with mosquitoes. I want to find a good method of avoiding the pesky buggers without damaging my oh so soft and supple skin [8D]. My aunt seems to have allergic reactions to bug spray and one of my cousin s two children have a skin condition that won t allow them to use bug spray.

I wanted to try the B1 theory, but couldn t find just plain ole B1.

I know sulphur works, but I don t want to drink water that smells like rotten eggs. (When I was a kid we had well water, it ran through a sulphur vein, water smelled bad, tasted good, and no mosquito bites.)

I have tried the skin so soft, leaves me feeling greasy and dirt sticks like glue!

I do use bug spray at the lake but it chokes me and well frankly it tastes bad, and you know good and well it is almost impossible to spray the stuff without getting it in your mouth or in your nose.

   So...
I decided to try the Bounce theory. Theory goes that you can either rub it on you or wear the sheet and it repels mosquitoes.

Last week mowed the lawn and put a bounce sheet in a button hole. No mosquito bites.

The other evening I went outside to visit neighbors, once again using a bounce sheet, rubbed it on exposed skin and also wore the same sheet in a button hole. No bites.

Tonight I went out to work on the shutters again. I got two bites within about a minute and a half. Came back in, grabbed a bounce sheet, rubbed it on me, put the sheet under the strap of my tank top and out I went. NO BITES AFTER THAT. My neighbor came over, she got several bites then said " hey give me that!"  and grabbed my bounce sheet and rubbed it on her legs. Before she left she said " that thing must work because I didn t get anymore bites!"

So in conclusion to my testing I would say the bounce sheets are an effective way to avoid mosquito bites. An added plus is that when you go to take your bath or shower it also softens the water if you have rubbed the sheet on your skin!

Next time I go to the lake, which is major mosquito territory I will let you know the results of the Bounce Sheet.

I guess for accurate statements I better clear up my preferred choice of dryer sheets. I actually used the Great Value brand from Wal-Mart.  [:D]

Since I was out sweating [: (] I would guess it did leave me smelling fresher than I would have otherwise! [8D]

ShirleyTGreat idea - just saw on the news lastnight that Connecticut has confirmed West Nile Virus in the state - as a matter of fact they found a dead crow in my town!!! It makes you worry abit more than usual about mosquito s!!
The bite of an infected mosquito can bring on encephelitis (sp?).  A serious swelling of the brain.
The kids get sprayed - when they go out but I will also pack us some bounce sheets as well for our camping trip- I like the button hole idea too!  You re a clever gal!
 Thanks for the test results!!!

ShirleyTJust heard that Durham,NC had a dead crow tested positive for West Nile Disease so everyone take the precautions when camping or when out of doors.  All the rain this year will increase the numbers of mosquitoes...plenty of puddles and containers holding water for them to breed.

ShirleyTGreat idea!  Maybe I can get the Sams  Club size and just make a huge ring around the yard.....

We ll be trying it too.  You ll soon be able to pick out the PUT members by the dryer sheets tied around our bodies.

ShirleyTMaybe we all could just get the liquid kind and dab it behind our ears or something to see if it will work.  We could put some on our buttons, wrists, elbows....[;)][:)][:D]

This would be another test to make -- maybe use it as body lotion.  Definitely cheaper and safer than most bug sprays around

I swear by deet ..... the only thing which kept them away. By the time I applied it, I would get 2 to 3 bites every morning ......

Jo AnnAn FYI on dryer sheets, the major component, outside of the paper itself, is a volitale wax than vaporizes at apx 108 degrees. The rest of the components are stabilzers for the wax and fragrences. The article went on to explain how the wax prevents wrinkling in fabrics, but that info got lost in the maze.

I do hope it works, as 100% DEET is all that allows me to be outside without looking like a hugh red welt.
