Title: Camping near Harrisburg-Lancaster
Post by: John Adams on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Does anyone have any recommendations for a campsite near Harrisburg-Lancaster ?
I m looking for a " State Park"  type place. Not an " RV resort" . My problem is that I have a small dog. I understand that Penn State parks do not allow dogs.

John AdamsLast time I looked at the PA State parks a few months ago, some where doing a trial on allowing pets.  It is definitely on a park by park basis.  Once you have a park in mind, you may want to check the web site or call them to check on the current pet status.

John AdamsCurrently, there are 19 State Parks in PA that allow pets.  There are a few that are in the general area you are talking about:  Pine Grove Furnace, Codorus, French Creek, Fowlers Hollow look like possibilities.  I don t know how close these are to your area of interest, but they all look like at least a half hour or more drive to Harrisburg/Lancaster.  the only one of these we have camped at is Fowlers Hollow, which is a nice little park in a remote setting, and it is rustic (no electric, pit toilets).

We have never visited the other parks, maybe someone else can help out there...

The PA Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources web site has more info on their pet program in State Parks. We also camp with dogs, and our experience in PA parks since they started this program has been mostly positive.
