Title: How close to home have you camped?
Post by: tlhdoc on Nov 23, 2003, 07:44 PM
We have a nice state park 17 miles from where we live.  We go there several times a year.

Not counting camping at your home, how close to home have you camped?

The two closest two campgeounds to us are Tuckahoe State Park (http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/tuckahoe.html) and Greenbelt National Park (http://www.nps.gov/gree/).

Both are within an hours drive and we have stayed at both.

I would suggest anyone thinking about camping in this are check out my Camping in the Washington DC Area Web Page (http://www.title-3.com/DCCamping.htm) for all of the options available.

I had to go with 21-50 miles because there are no campgrounds closer...well, maybe City of Chesapeake's Northwest River Park, but I'm not impressed enough with that place to stay there! Va Beach is about 25 miles, and Newport News Park is about 35 miles... City of Portsmouth used to have a campground at Sleepy Hole Park, but they since sold that to City of Suffolk and Suffolk closed it down! Shame, that one was only 8 miles from me!!!

How about less than one mile?

It's about .95 miles (as the crow flies) from the campground to our new (to us) home.  We spent the last half of August and the first half of September there while waiting to close on the house.

I was assuming that this did not count the usual camping in the driveway or backyard.:J

We have a couple of lovely parks within 5 miles of home. Pohick Bay in one direction and Prince William Forest Park on the other.   I'm having camping withdrawals!!!

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is about 5 miles from home.We have camped there 2X in the last year.Big Basin State Park is about 18 miles away.We have also camped there a couple of times this year. Both are beautiful parks that I would recommend to all who visit Northern California. My wife and I have both lived in the area several years-We still love it enough to pay for camping "right next door".

Joshua Tree is right out our front door, less than 500 meters away.  The closest campground is less than 10 miles away, DW stayed there while I was in Iraq.  We regularily camp up in the park at Jumbo Rocks Campground.
