Title: Going Camping!!
Post by: Papaso on Dec 03, 2003, 10:31 AM
Well, we're headed out to Long Key this weekend our first trip in six weeks. Been busy replacing the fascia around our home and getting it ready to paint.
Got most of it done but still haven't finished, I'll probably start painting after the holidays. It's suppose to be a bit brisk, down to the high fifties so that will most likely keep us out of the water (our blood has thinned out over the years of Florida weather) but we'll do some fishing and relaxing and grilling some beef over the campfire. What's nice is we can keep a campfire going all the time got plenty of firewood. Can't wait as usual, I'll try and sneek out a little early so we can set up during daylight. Campers all ready to go just need to pack clothes and food. I feel like a little kid :D

Wow!  You folks in South Florida really have thinned out your blood. Up here in North Florida we're having daytime highs in the fifties and lows in the upper twenties.  Last night it was a little warmer it is supposed to be colder this coming weekend.

I'll be thinking about you enjoying the WARM weather!!!

Wow...that sounds wonderful! Part of me is jealous...gosh i'm having some serious camping withdrawals...but part of me also loves this cold time of the year during the holidays.  The thought of sitting around a campfire though........ahhhh.....that I miss badly!

Enjoy the trip and think of those of us in the cold north that are done for the season. :)   It was 18 degrees F last night and they are calling for the first real snow storm of the season Friday into Saturday. :(

We camp at Long Key State Park at mile marker 67.5 it's on the ocean side of the Key. Sites are right on the ocean with palm trees and Australian pines for shade. All sites have electric and water and the restrooms, showers are very clean even though they are a little old. It's a beautiful place to camp, it's about 10 miles out of Marathon. When we get there I try not to start the truck till we leave. There's great hiking trails that take you along the coast and into the Hammocks surrounding the park. Fishing is great, some of the best flats fishing around, catching Snook, Redfish, Grunts, Barracuda and the occasional Shark.
As for my blood thinning out, yeah it has. I don't know if it's just because I'm older or what. I used to come down for vacations during the winters and I'd be swimming in 60 and 70 degree weather. Oh well, it's almost here, wish you were all comming along. Have a great trip Tim and tell MIckey we'll see him on 1/9/04 for the marathon.

Have a great time!    I think I'll add Long Key to my list of places to check out.

Nice thing about living in NC is that if there is a light dusting of snow or ice, it is all melted in a couple of days.  I stay off the road, though, because some people around here don't know how to drive in the stuff and fender benders start happening.

We've tried to get into that park, and never seem to be able to beat the crowd. We've ended up camping at a private campground (oh no, just having a senior moment, can't think of the name of it, but it's right next to the refugee camp, and the barbed wire is kinda intimidating, LOL.) But, what the heck, it's the Keys, right??!!

I wish I were you.  It's snowing right now where I'm at.  Our PU is tucked away in the garage for the winter.

Have fun!

Oh, now I remember, the name of the campground we stayed in was Boyd's.   It seemed like it would have been a nice place, except we were there during spring break, and they had divided every campsite into 3.   We were lucky that was one of the times we were camping in our van, as there was hardly enough room for anything else.  We were next to some ladies in a tent, and every time we stepped out of the van we tripped over the tent ropes.   We shared a picnic table with them, and it was fun, but the bathrooms were a nightmare.   All those college girls trying to get dolled up for what ever they were doing, all day and into the night.   You couldn't get near the pool or the laundry room either.   It's a good thing that in the Keys, you aren't really interested in sitting around the campsite all day.   There's too much else to do.
