Title: Picking up the new Hybrid!!!!
Post by: chasd60 on Dec 09, 2003, 11:26 AM
Well I once again make the long journey from Maine to Wisconsin to buy a camper. Amazing the amount of money to be saved, close to $5000 in this case. As much as R-Vision would like you to buy from your local dealer, they haven't responded to my request for a brochure or the location of the nearest dealer for which I asked 4-5 weeks ago and once again since then.

We are leaving about 5AM on Friday the 12th from my son's place in NH and we will be at a motel in Pleasant Prairie WI by about 10-11PM. Have an appointment to pick up my 2004 Bantam B23S at 9:30AM on Saturday the 13th. Will be a nice ride with my 25 yo son, take turns driving.
Plan on leaving there around noonish to head back home, probably sleep in the camper that night and get to his place in NH by noon on Sunday. Then just another 2 1/2-3 hours to my place. At least I won't have to deal with a nor'easter this weekend!!

Hey, Chasd, I remember your delighted  (and delightful) account of  driving  to WI to pick up  the PU just a few years ago (accompanied by your little daughter, as I recall.)   CONGRATULATIONS on the Bantam.  I hope you get as much fun out of it as you have the PU.  Elisa

That actually does sound like a fun trip. A little father-son time around the holidays!

Congrats on the new rig. I live about 70 miles north of where you'll be. Weather wise, we should be getting some snow over the next 2 days, so drive carefully.

I'll be at the window about 9 a.m., so I'll give you a wave...:W

I went with my daughter in April of 2001 when I picked up the popup, spring break so we went down to Kentucky then Myrtle Beach before coming home. This time it will just be a grab and go with the camper.
Stopping at genef's for breakfast :p before we head out, he is only about 15 miles or so from my son's place.

Have a great trip, and drive safely.

The only snafu we had when picking up our Hybrid, was the hitch required a 2 5/16" ball, not the 2" the popup used.
No problem, they sold balls, but the 1 1/4" diameter shank, the bracket that holds the anti sway ball wouldn't fit, so, we had to find a welder that could weld the bracket to the drawbar.
Not sure if you are using a WDH, which should have the correct size ball. Our 3/4 ton Chevy can handle the Hybrid without a WDH.
Once again, congratulations, and I bet you can't wait to go camping.

Yep, you're going to enjoy the trailer, but not the fuel mileage!!! Be that as it may, it'll make camping just a little easier on you! :D

I am buying the Equalizer WDH from the dealer and they will have most of the installation done when I get there, it includes the drawbar and ball.

First trip for the new camper will be next April to Disney. Hate to do that for the maiden voyage but it is hard to camp in Maine before then, a little chilly. Maybe I'll get a chance to get out for a weekend or so before then.

How do you like you 2500HD? We just bought one last weekend. Don't know what kind of camper we will get next, but it won't be another popup. Now we have lots of options.

First off,
appologies to Chasd60 for Hyjacking his thread ;)

We love our new Truck.
With a family of 6 we needed plenty of room.
DW drives a Safari, which seats 8, and can tow 5,500 lbs and most SUV's were not increasing the tow capacity by much. The 10,000 lbs of the Silverado is nice for our 6,000 lb Hybrid.
The truck is big, and parking is not easy, but I still like it.
It just felt nicer than the Ford or Dodges I drove.

Chasd60, congratulations on the new camper. I know you will enjoy it!

We got a regular cab as their are just the 2 of us. Your right, 150/1500's and SUV's based on them just don't give that much of a improvement over a Astro/Safari or the S-10/S-15's that we have. I didn't even drive either of the others, the differance in tow rating was to much.

It's Monday Chasd60,
and you've had plenty of time to play with your new Hybrid.
Time to come back inside and tell us all about it and the trip.

You better post some time this week, as we are heading off to Disneyland for Christmas with our Hybrid on Saturday morning and meeting up with some of the NNC croud far a Rally the weekend after Christmas.

How did the picking up the camper trip go?  We are all waiting.  How did it handle?  Did the dealer have everything ready to go when you got there, save for attaching the hitch?  A new camper for Christmas makes me envious of you.

Stopped at genef's for breakfast before leaving NH.

Trip was great and uneventful like it should be, hit a little lake effect snow in NY but not too bad. Arrived around midnight my time (11PM WI time) on Friday night and got a hotel room. Picked up the camper around 10AM on Saturday, did the walk thru and it took them about 10-15 minutes to complete the WDH install. We left CFO around noon and got to my son's place in NH around 8:30Am on Sunday. I got home to my place in Maine around noon. Got the camper setup except for the bunkends and fired up the furnace, spent about 4 hours in it reading the manuals and listenting to the stereo. Can't wait til spring!!!!

The camper is great and my truck seemed to tow it with ease with the Equal-i-zer WDH with sway control. My truck got horrible gas mileage on the way back. I know it is just about due for new plugs, cap and rotor. I also know that it gets worse gas mileage when it is cold. But 7.5mpg at 65mph is horrible, hopefully the warmer weather and tuneup will make all the difference. I did get almost 10mpg doing a steady 55mph.

Congrats on the new trailer Chas! :S

Seems with the hybrids around, the normal progression of tent->popup->TT->Class A is being interrupted for a while! ;)
