You older folks may remember this from years back. I think this candy was popular in the 40-50's. We used to find it in the candy department of Sears, when they had them.
WARNING: this candy swells up and can burn you so use a very large high-sided pan when making this.
1 cup sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
3 teaspoons baking soda
chocolate chips (optional)
In a large straight-sided pan place sugar and syrup. Cook over medium heat and stir constantly with wooden spoon until sugar dissolves and starts to boil. Cook to 300 degrees F on a candy thermometer. Color should be light golden brown. NOTE: This is the dangerous part: Remove from heat and stir in soda vigorously. The mixture will swell up considerably. Quickly pour into a well buttered 9 x 13" pan. Let cool about 3 hours. Break into peices and dip in melted chocolate (you can dip the whole piece or just the top).

I'm going to try this out! Some of my family exchanges just orniments (to many kids!) I always make a bag/basket of treats like breads, cookies, fudge, and I try new things out too. This sounds easy and hopefully it'll bring back memories for some family members! :XMas
