Title: Got a GPS?
Post by: Used 2B PopUPTimes on Jan 15, 2004, 07:11 PM
I got a call from, owner of Oak Grove Campground in Imnottell'n,TN. He wants to offer anyone showing up at the right coordinates a free stay at his campground.
If we can get this going it'll be fun!

Let me know what you think and we'll make it a regular section in the magazine.

Cool.

You could even add another twist... have a geocaches hidden at participating campgrounds, and only have the coordinates available to PUT subscribers...  Find the cache, keep the goodies, get your mug posted in the geocaching section of the magazine.

Maybe get the sponsors of the magazine to put up some goodies.  Put a coupon for said goodie in a geocache, let the fun begin.

I've been a lurker on the GPS forum for a while.  Sometimes the GPS coordinates are only part of the puzzle.  That may take you to a spot where you have to use the published clues to figure out the next step.  May take a few steps and creative thinking, to get to the final coordinates.

Oh yea, I have two GPS units.  One will be up for sale soon, the other is an Etrex Legend.  Next month, I'll sell enough stuff on Ebay to pay for an iQue 3600.  Luv them toyz.

I have a Magellan Meridian Platinum that I bought last year because I wanted to Geocache. I started caching last May & whenever we go camping I look for caches close to the campsite. This is a great hobby and it takes me & my family to places I would have never known existed.

Thanks for adding a topic for this. I'll be checking this one daily.

Great new forum and great idea for the board as well as the mag.  I hope it results in some additional subscribers for you Dave.   :D

We don't geocache (yet?) but it sounds very cool.  May just have to start--a treasure hunt beats a snipe hunt anyday!  Hey Rich, maybe you can give a demo (like Moose's DO demo) on Geocaching at the next rally! ;)

Just got a Garmin IQUE3600 for my husband for christmas.  We haven't had much time to play with it, but what we did do with it impressed us.  I got more memory for the PDA so now I can download tons more maps.  Can't WAIT to use it more!

I always take my GPS with me camping. There's a lot of caches up in the SLO county area & Pismo as well. We can cache there!

     Here's My ideal.
You'll be given 2 Coordinates to your Geocamp'
The first cache is for the location!  Opp's
The gate's Locked!  Your second Cache will be to find a box.
In the box you'll find..A Key!  a disposable camera!  a map where to set up.
A log in book. and a list of local geocaches.

After your setup, take a photo ,stay the night!
 Enjoy the local cache's
Can we make this work?   any suggestion's

Great Idea!!! I began geocaching after I read about it in Pop Up Times.  I quickly found the //www.geocaching.com site & joined.  I am also known as kaaljonesfamily there.  We have two caches & two travel bugs.

Before we go camping (or on any trip), I look up possible caches.  I usually take my son & daugher while my wife does some of the things she likes to do.

We have just a simple garmin eTrex ($99), & it does a good job.  You may be able to find a used one on ebay that may be a better value.

A co-worker told me about geocaching last year--just before the article came out in the PUT magazine. I haven't tried geocaching yet, but I registered at the website (geocaching.com) and I gave myself a Garmin Etrex Legend for Christmas.  I'm still playing with it to figure out all the features, but hope to try geocaching when the weather gets milder. (I'm not much of a cold weather person!)

I like the new forum idea 'cause I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions!

Haven't Geocached, but do have a Garmin Etrex that I use to make sure I can get back to the starting point when kayaking large unfamiliar lakes!

WE have been geocaching about a year.  WElove it and it goes hand in hand with camping.
Early last year those of us in Arkansas actually were able to write letters and attend meetings to get the State Park Commission to allow geocaches in Arkansas parks.  All you have to do is get permission from the office and complete a quick form.
I like the idea of geocamping!

Those looking to buy a GPS, check out these 3 websites for the best prices I've found:

http://www.gpsnow.com/

http://www.gpsdiscount.com/

http://www.ecost.com/

If you're looking at one, note that one selling a GPS for less, may be charging more for the accessories.  Sneaky, very sneaky.

My last Ebay item sells tonight... I get to order an iQue 3600 this week.   :D

Just got the DH a GPS for Christmas. We have been out geocaching and it has brought us to some beautiful areas that were near our home I never knew were there. I just ordered some accessories for his birthday. Now he can hide his own and I also got him a travel bug to put in. We would love to do geocaching while camping.

The Garmin iQue 3600 arrived yesterday.  What an amazing little machine!  I loaded up the 512MB card with the entire FL map (~80MB), still have over 400MB left.  This is every road, and most every park, campground, major store, school, church, ATM, restaurant, etc., etc.  I can search for a campground, and once it's found, click Route To.  Within a minute, we're ready to go.  No more paper maps for me.

The voice gives a heads up over the speaker and lets you know in plenty of time when the next turn is coming up.  Hey, now I won't get grumpy when my "navigator" falls asleep.

If you miss a turn, the voice lets you know you are off course, then it says "re-routing", and within a few seconds, it's figured out how to get you back on course.

Unlike the built in navagation systems, I can take the computer with me and review the map while sitting in a restaurant.

Full up color display, built in GPS, not much bigger than a pack of playing cards!

If you are considering a navagational GPS, take a look at this one before you buy something more expensive.   ;)

I will still keep my Etrex Legend because it is completely waterproof and a tough little GPS.  The Legend goes onboard the pontoon boat, my kayak, and mountain bike.  Smaller memory for maps, and screen too small really for navigation, but every bit as accurate as my iQue.  Also runs 15-18 hours on 2 AA batteries.

2manytoyz,

Congratulations on the Ique 3600! I got one for my husband for Christmas since he had just started a job in which he is driving to unfamiliar places all the time. It is THE coolest thing going for us right now. Of course, it's also our first GPS, so we can't compare, but we also can't complain!

All that and a PDA too! :D

Did you get the car "mount" kit as well?  I can't imagine using it while driving without it.
Title:
Post by: 2manytoyz on Feb 06, 2004, 04:12 PM
I bought the package deal that included the Nav Kit.  Got the leather case for it at the same time.  Going camping next weekend, so it'll get a real test.  Navigates around town perfectly.  I'll be putting pictures and details on a webpage after my trip.

I will probably also make a custom mount for it in my truck.  The Nav kit works well for now, but I plan on modifying it (as I usually do).

Too cool!   :D
Title: Gpsmap 60c
Post by: camphost on Feb 29, 2004, 07:04 PM
We just bought a Garmin GPSMAP60C.  I seems really cool, but we are still trying to figure out how to use it.  We have bought the US Topo Series and ordered the City Select.  It came with Trip and Waypoint Manager.  Do any of you have one of these?
Title:
Post by: 2manytoyz on Feb 29, 2004, 09:08 PM
No, I don't have the 60C yet, but I have been looking.  I know, I know, I already have several, but more is better.

I imagine loading maps and using it isn't too far from the Etrex Legend I'm very familiar with.  While my iQue is VERY capable, it isn't weather proof, like the rest of the Garmin family.  That's why I still have my Legend.  The 60C would be a nice upgrade since it has a larger memory and a color display.

Give us a report back on how you like the 60 once you get some maps loaded and have had a chance to use it in the field.

At least I'm selling stuff on Ebay to pay for my addiction!   :D

Well, I understand how I am going to load the maps to use, how do I delete them (if I don't want them anymore) so that I can free up the memory again?

If it's like my Legend...  You can load a mix of city maps, topo maps, and marine maps, but they have to be done at the same time.  Each time you upload maps, the existing set in the memory is erased.  I have a love/hate with this method.  If you want to add another area, you have to start over and load everything you had again.
Title:
Post by: camphost on Mar 01, 2004, 10:10 AM
OH!  Well, I suppose that is why I could not find anything about deleting what is already in there.  Thank you for telling me.  You probably saved me some effort.  We bought the Topo maps and the Trip and Waypoint software came with the GPS but no one had the City Select in stock.  I ordered it over the net.  I won't get it for a few days.  I was going to load a few topo maps, thinking I would just load the City Select maps on top of them.  NOW I will wait and do them all at once.  Thank you for the information!  Obviously, I have a LOT to learn, but it should be fun.

Next Christmas we are going to Italy and DH and I would like to have the maps for Italy, but you have to buy all of Europe.  Pretty expensive when we are only interested in Rome and Sicily.  We will have to think about that for awhile.

Thank you for you help, as always, this board, and all of you, are GREAT!

Howdy All!

Yes, we have several GPS units.  I have the DeLoram unit that attaches to my laptop for navigating while on the road.  It even talks to me letting me know when to turn etc...

I also have an older Magellan that is attached to my mountain bike, and a new MAGELLAN Meridian with an additional 64 meg memory chip for storing stuff. I use the new one for GeoCaching.

We are members of the GeoCaching board, and enjoy the fun.

We like chasing GeoCaches.

My guess everybody is campin & cachin' if they know what's good for them. I know I have been.

Actually I will be at a camp & cache event next weekend HERE (//%22http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=7147b5e7-5b46-4ea2-8a38-212b9e948ebf%22). I will be assisting in the seminar and the maping project.

And a couple of weeks ago we camped at Little Pine Creek SP and cached. See pic.
