Title: Savannah campground ?
Post by: woodthumb on Jan 22, 2004, 06:09 PM
Looking for a good CG in or near Savannah.  We were there two years ago ( without camper ) and want to go back with kids this time.  One of favorite old southern cities, especially interesting for Civil War buffs. Any ideas ?  Thanks.

How about 56 miles away?  I love Hunting Island State Park (http://www.arveeclub.com/showthread.php?t=49951).  It's 56 miles south of Savanah right on the ocean.

Check out my review

Skidaway is only 10 miles from Savannah and a great park. I would highly recommend it. Hunting Island is also a great park but if it's Savannah you're after - go to Skidaway.  By the way, some of Hunting Island's sites on the ocean are now closed due to erosion as is one of the bathrooms.

Not too much further is Fort Clinch, at the FL/GA border.  Nice campground, and the Fort is worth a visit too.  Make sure you call ahead to find out when they will be having period actors at the fort.  More info here: http://www.2manytoyz.com/clinch.html

Try Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill.  It's about a 25 to 30 minute drive from Savannah and there is an earthwork fort there that was taken over by Sherman's men during the Civil War.  It was the last holdout before they reached Savannah.

Fort McAllister is great.  We have stayed there and liked it very much.  The earthen fort is interesting, the scenery very pretty.  Not far from Savannah, it's an easy drive.
