Title: What have "non rv'ers" called your brake controller??
Post by: copcarguy on Mar 31, 2004, 10:59 PM
Hey all!

I had some training this past week and I had a few co-workers in my van carpooling... Every one of them asked "What's that thing??" while pointing to my Prodigy brake controller. Some thought it was a small radio, some thought it was some kinda music/computer thingy, but the majority thought it was a radar detector. I have never seen such confused looks when I answered it was a "brake controller". I had to go through the entire explantion how it sends electric current to the brakes on the trailer at different voltages depending on the rate of deceleration... yadda yadda yadda... Once we got to the training academy, I had to show the 7 way connector on the van, the different classes of hitches, etc. I ended up giving a small class on towing in the parking lot. LOL :p :D

So my question is: what have people thought your brake controller was??

If I hadn't learned it over here, I would definitely think that it was a nifty radar detector too.

I forget it's there, so I only get to notice it when a 'new' passenger rides with me.  "What's that thing?"  "What thing?" "That thing with the lights." (red LEDs).  "That's my brake controller" "Why don't I have one like that?"  "Cuz you drive a little car..."

CampNFan, copcarguy wanted to know what your PASSENGERS thought the brake controller was, not what YOU wish it was! :J

Never have had anyone ask, but you always just say you have no idea but it came with the TV and are too afraid to ask!

Most of the non camping friends think it is a radar detector, but they can't figure out how it works since it sits so low underneath the dash.....I just usually let them speculate on the marvels of new technology before I tell them what it is.
