Looking for a nice place in this area, State or private. Can you help?

There are several in the  Croatan National Forest (http://ncnatural.com/NCUSFS/Croatan/), that might meet your needs.  DW stayed at Cedar Point several times years ago and really liked it.  It might not be as close to New Bern as what you are looking for though.  If you have access to it, MCAS Cherry Point has a great campground.  The base is about 25 miles from New Bern.
