Title: OC Camper's homemade donuts
Post by: Chez Way on Apr 27, 2004, 12:01 AM
Thanks to Jacqui, I was a big hit yesterday when I made these at home for my kids.  Jacqui made them at the rally in Yucaipa.

1 container of 99 cent Ralph's (generic brand) refrigerator biscuits
vegetable oil
powdered sugar
cinnamon sugar

Cut hole in biscuits with a water bottle cap.  Heat up oil in in large fry pan and fry up the "donuts" and "donut holes".  Sprinkle or dip in the sugar...yum!

Jacqui has made these donuts for the Saturday morning breakfasts at our rallies and mini-rallies.  I've heard they're very good.  Of course, when I finally get to the place on the buffet line where the donut platter is, it's already empty.  Hmmm...come to think of it....Jeanne and Deidre were always in line ahead of me.... ;) :D

We've done this for about the last 25yrs.  I also just take the biscuit and kinda stretch it till it's about 1/3 to 1/2 the thickness and fry.

Another one that is on the same line as the doughnuts is:

*NOTE: the measurements are a guess on my part, I don't have a recipe, but do it by feel/sight. So this is a recipe you can play with and adjust to your taste.

PULL APARTS

2 cans biscuits
1 cube Margarine or butter, melted
2 Tablespoons Cinnamon (or more to taste)
1/2 cup Sugar (may need more)

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix cinnamon and sugar in a bowl and set aside. Pop open the biscuits, one at at time, and cut each round into 4 (easiest using a scissor), toss in sugar mixture and put into a bundt pan. If there is any sugar mixture left, pour over the biscuits. Pour margarine over the biscuits. Bake for 30 minutes.

When done invert onto a dinner plate and have fun pulling these tasty morsels apart. I have also seen recipes that use flavored Jello (like strawberry) instead of the sugar mixture. The kids would love them!

Enjoy,

Joan

I'm hungry again, but don't need more sugar. Another thing to do with the quartered biscuits is to toss them in melted butter and dill. The cook in the bundt pan and have for dinner.

I may give the pull apart recipe a try for breakfast this Sunday since we'll be camping.  It should be an easy breakfast to have before we start breaking camp.

Thanks for the compliment Jeanne.   My kids tell me that I have to make donuts when ever we have a rally.    I actually use the "hockey puck" style biscuits.  They are the ones that are usally 2 or 3 for a dollar.  I have never tried them with the "grand" size.  I bet they would doubly delicious.  What I like about this recipe is you can make it even when you don't have hookups.  Kids of all ages love them.

Lori if Jeanne and I both make these, I am sure you will get some at the next campout.

I have never tried any other variations but who would  of knowed how versitile canned biscuits could be.:D

Yeah, now I remember.  They were the 2 for 99 cents containers that I used.  Now we just have to figure out how to make them with the chocolate topping...yum!

One container of chocolate frosting does the trick. Add another notch to the belt.:#

You could also melt milk chocolate chips.  How do they turn out with powdered sugar?  I usually use granulated sugar.  I bet powdered sugar is really good too.

When Paula and I did a cooking demo for Girls Scouts, we made donuts from the biscuits. We stretched them and made holes with our fingeres. Half went into a bag of powdered sugar and the other half into a bag of cinnamon sugar. Best when warm.

We make them too.  I just poke a hole and stretch them out.  I haven't used cinnamon sugar that sounds good.  In the past I just used powdered sugar.  Warm is best.  When they get cold they taste more like a biscuit. :)

I've never tried this...but it was recommended to me by a friend who makes these for her family!

DEEP CHOCOLATE GLAZE

1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
2 squares Baker's unsweetened chocolate, melted over hot water
1 tsp. butter
1 Tbsp. milk

In small saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil; boil
1/2 minute, stirring constantly. Slowly stir into chocolate; then
stir in butter. Slowly beat in milk. Beat until of spreading
consistency.

Eip in hot donuts while glaze is still warm. It will thicken as it cools.

geeeze you guys, I am getting FAT just reading this thread---and since I am also simultaneously  drooling all over myself, I am not only fat looking but really slobby looking, too! :J   (How DO you Californians always stay so blonde and tan and  fit when you are always eating stuff like this?;) )

OK, here's another version of the Pull-Apart Bread.   We  called it Monkey Bread  and everyone loved it whether  we were camping or not!  (It's great for a brunch or special Sunday morning brekky when you want something quick and easy and  yummy.)

Just follow the general directions already given foir Pull-Apart Bread, but after dipping the biscuit pieces in butter, then dip them  in instant butterscotch pudding mix  with some chopped pecans and  a tablespoon or 2  of brown sugar mixed in.  Add cinnamon or other spice if deseired. Bake.  VIOLA--coffee cake! :-()  :-()  :-()

Do you need enough oil to "deep fry?"  If not how much oil is needed.

Sorry Rod, I missed the post.  I use about an 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in an aluminum dutch oven pot (5 qt).  Last time I used a 12in skillet and it worked fine too.
