Title: Allergies.. just shoot me!
Post by: Firefyter-Emt on May 03, 2004, 10:49 PM
Good Grief!! I am soooo misreable here. I have flu like symptomes, sore throat, sinus pain & blockage, ear blockage, achy cough, runny nose, itchy eyes, very tired(according to my dear loving wife, a mite bit grumpy, well in more or less those words) I know I have at least 2-4 weeks of this to go. I just got some Clarinex and Prednosone to try to give it a kick in the pants..

Ok, That is my rant for this evening.. Just thought I would stop in a say Hi!

Been there, done that recently with two round of antibiotics.  The first round of 10 days did not get the bugs.  The 2nd seems to have gotten me almost cured.  I know the miserable feeling and the sore, sore throat.  It does take a while to get to feeling better and meanwhile, you just don't feel like doing anything.  Take care of it or the ear stuff can lead to very bad dizziness.

I always thought I had mild to medium allergies, sneezing a lot, runny eyes, runny nose, years and years. After starting to take the the BP medicine all the symptomps disappearead, and I said that is weird ......but it is true .....

I hope your symptomps are under control FF-EMT .... it always made me miserable every fall and every spring ...

Think of how I feel, I have year round allergies both indoor and outdoor.  DD was suffering about 2 weeks ago and I just said welcome to the world of allergies.

I do feel sorry for those who suffer.

I have learned to eliminate certain things:  no air fresheners in the house, no being around smokers, stay indoors when the oak trees are blooming, stay away from moldy and mildewed stuff, avoid folks wearing heavy frangrances.  It's impossible to avoid everything but when your body is worn down by constant exposure to stuff then it's likely you will suffer from infections.  Running an air filter in the bedroom helps a lot and you can have the cleanest house in the world (which helps to a degree) but it still doesn't stop all allergins.  I highly recommend NasalCrom during the allergy season as it block the allergins coming into your system through your nose. (As with anything, check with your Dr. first.)

I used Nasal Crom this year (my first really bad allergy year), and it does help A LOT!! I finally had to break down and talk to my Physician though, he gave me a script for Flonase and after a little over a week I feel a lot better.  I mean a LOT better!!

Birol, I went on BP meds in October, but this year I had my first bad allergic reaction to pollens...maybe it's those Canadian drugs that do it for you. :-)  Or maybe it's the new house.......

Oh.....there's so many things that people might be allergic to that it would fill up one of those file cubes like those stacking storage cub thingies, according to my Dr.  The key to some of those nasal blockers is to let it build up for about 5 days and good results can be obtained.  If things are really bad, then see a Dr.  After coming off the meds, though, usually NasalCrom keeps it at bay for me and that's what my Dr. recommended that I use during the allergy season.  So I will just use that when I feel like I am getting some kind of reactions.

Boy I too can relate.  I was sick most of March with Asthma, Bronchitis, and a sinus infection.  It started the first part of March with an Asthma attack that wouldn't clear up.  I couldn't catch my breath and started having pain in my back and chest (NO not the heart!).  Went to see the Dr. and he gave me antibotice to keep it from going into Bronchitis.  Well 4 days later I was down with Bronchitis and a sinus infection.  The Dr. had me stay home from work for a week.  Finished the first course of meds and still couldn't get my breath and still had the pains.  Called the Dr. and he gave me another course of the meds and said if I wasn't better in a week to make an appointment to see him.  Well, it still didn't clear up so made the appointment and went to see him again.  He gave me a shot of Predizone (sp?), gave me an Asthma treatment and gave me another course of the meds, plus a new inhaler (Serevent).   He had me say home for another 2 days.  I felt much better in a couple of days, but the second dose of Serevent (1 does every 12 hrs.) was keeping me awake at night (3 days with no sleep!!!).  Called the Dr. again and he said I could get by with just one does of the Serevent.  After all that, I still have a bit of a cough and with the "bad air days" I still get small pains, but my Albuterol usually helps this.   BOY, and the Dr. says I only have intermittant Asthma!

I'm feeling much better, but they say if you don't have alergies when you come to Sacramento, CA, you will in a few years.   Boy are they correct, although I have been here most of my life, it just took getting OLD for it to kick in.

Hope you feel better soon, it takes time.

Joan

Hey Joan,

Glad to hear that you are doing better too.  Veronica is on Sigulaire this year, she said it seems to be helping her....she has several of the inhalers as well, Albuteral is the main one.  She went for the allergy panel last month and the list of things that she is sensitive to is growing all the time.  I tend to agree that birthdays seems to compound my allergies too, I think I am allergic to age.

Take care, stay well,

Larry

I use albuterol for my asthma as well, and it really helps me, and for some of the other allergies, like the pollen, mold and mildew, air polution and dust, I've found that sudafed works very well.   My DD can't take it at all, but some of the stuff she uses does nothing for me.  It seems that we all have our own formula for success.  I am also severely allergic to bee stings, need to get a new epi pen, and at times, like camping in the spring when all the stuff is going at once, sometimes nothing works but Benadryl.  Or, maybe it's just that I go to sleep and don't notice.

LOL, How I can relate to that one...there is something to be said for that euphoric sleepy sensation! **yawn**

They have a saying in the DC area....if you have never had sinus problems you will get them HERE!!!!!!!

D.C. was always a swamp....now it remains a swamp with buildings on top.  Thanks to the feds I work in a "sick " building where I run my air all year round ...just to breath.  Since we moved here in 92 it continues to get worst every year.

 "I feel your pain!!!"    Truly!!!!!

We also are on clarinex, and a ton of other stuff................(sigh)(gasp gasp, sniff sniff, )

My problem is that I'm not alregic.  I have been through all the tests and nothing has a reaction except Kapoc (sp?) which is stuff they used to use to stuff mattresses, that they don't use anymore, and Pyrithrens (sp?) which is in bug sprays (I just sneeze with them).  The doctors have told me that I have very sensitive sinuses and it would be easier if I was alergic.  So I sniffel on and on and on.....

Hope every one is doing better.

We only do better for a little while......till the next episode. :eyecrazy:  That is, until we have some kind of reaction to "something" the next time.

This year my allergies are killing me.  I have been on Allegra for several years and it isn't working that well for me this year.  I will go back to Flonase.  I used it several years ago, but the Allegra worked for hives and allergies.  So I will have to see if the hives come back. :eyecrazy:

Our environment is making us sick, and I think it's our own fault that we've made it worse with so many chemicals and pollutants fouling the air, inside and out.   Can't take it all back now that it's been done, but it seems that allergies and asthma have run rampant in the last decade or so.  Almost like an epidemic.

BTW, has anyone else tried to use the allergy and asthma watch feature on the home page of the SBCyahoo service?   I have set it so that it's near the top and I can see it instantly when I click on my home page, but for the entire month that i've had it there, even when I'm having a bad allergy or asthma day, it says that conditions are good and the air quality is good.  Does anyone know where this is suppose to be?  I need to move there.

Lee, are you feeling any better just yet?   Hope you are but you still have to be careful about being around certain blooming things, smoke, fumes, etc.  My Dr. says it would fill several stacks of files to figure out everything people are allergic to.

Yes, you know I really am.. It looks like the Prednisone really is doing the trick. In our area, the tree pollen is in "high" alert and for the most part, I function normal. I still have a little stuffy nose but I can live with that. For the last 5 (?) years, spring time has been 3-5 weeks of solid flu like symptoms. I am also taking Clarinex with it, but may not need it with the Prednisone. I am taking the Prednisone twice a day, it seems to last for about 12 hours or so.  I am really very happy about this, I do not react to meds well, in fact, meds do not really work on me. I seem to be very stubborn to results from them. (I have tried all the major allergy meds in the last 5 years with no results)  If I get a cold, I can take 1/2 a bottle on Nyquil and not be the least bit sleepy. (that used to freak out the secretary at my old job as she watched me do that waiting for me to just fall over.) She was like my wife, one spoon full for a zombie-like state...

Anyway.. Thanks all!  I am, as they say... A Happy Camper!!

Oh, yea.. I have the camper out of the back yard and set up in the driveway now~~ Woo Hoo.. the camping bug is getting close!

I have been sneezing so much lately, and I'm not sure exactly what plant/tree that is in bloom, but we seem to have so much of it around here.

Seems that the hardest time with this plant seems to be in AM.  Yesterday, I left the house and there is the smell.  It is kinda hard to describe, but seem kinda like a perfumey, herby, kinda peppery smell.

I drove to work and I had to have the windows down as the A/C is out in the car and that's all I could smell was this thing and I sneezed the whole 23miles to work.  I have had such a bad headache sine last Thurs and this doesn't help the cause.

I still have very slight allergies, but nothing I can't just sneeze my way through.  For about 2 years my allergies were uncontrollable.   I had an inhaler, steroid nasal drops and was taking allergy meds year round to just keep things in check.  I discovered it was the building I was working in.  My first company was bought out by a large company and most everyone in my department went to work for the new company.  I was SO sick for the two years I was there and didn't realize how bad it was until I left.  I found a new job in November of 2000.  In December of 2000, I stopped taking all the allergy meds because I seemed fine then.  I haven't taken anything since!  I never had much faith in those "sick building" syndromes, but I'm a firm believer now.
