Change your signature and give it a name.  I called DH and he was excited for you even though you 2 haven't even talked.

The bunk ends look like there's no holes.  I never really got a chance to look at all the pics, but the 2 that are dark look the the bunkends and no light seems to be coming thru any holes.

I looked carefully at the canvas all I could in all the poctures, canvas seems to be in excellent shape to be honest !. What disturbs me little bit is, that it doesn't show the inside too much, but I guess I might end up replacing the dinette seats is all which can go wrong probably.
Title:
Post by: angelsmom10 on May 04, 2004, 02:20 PM
Really there isn't much inside except the cushions, and they can be replaced with 4 or 6 inch foam and for a temporary measure, throw sheets over them till you can get someone to sew new ones for you.
Title:
Post by: MommaMia on May 04, 2004, 02:56 PM
here are some of the pics.  I enhanced them with Adobe.... easier to see the details.

You can see the cushions better.  They look pretty good.  Also you can see that the dinette IS there.  It's folded down into another bed.  AND  image b and b3 are the opposite ends and it looks like both ends make into beds.  So that's 4 beds!

Yup... just went back and looked harder.  There are the 2 bunk ends, then to the left of the sink there is an area that folds to a bed (most likely a couch area) and then to the right of the stove/fridge is another bed area... most likely the dinette folded down.  It's the same basic floorplan of my old 67 Skamper.

Congratulations Birol.  The popup looks great.  It looks to be in really good condition for its age.  The old owners seem to of taken really good care of it.  Enjoy it!!

Taking out cabinets is a major renovation.  No need to do that.  Peel and stick vinyl flooring tiles lay down SOOOO easily!!  You can trim them to size with a mat or exacto knife or even scissors if necessary.  IMO, the floors aren't bad.  A good scrubbing with Comet will work wonders.  Plus, you'll probably throw down a rug anyway.  If not, the cg dirt gets pretty gritty on the floors and makes for messy feet.  Don't worry about the floors, I say.

Cindy is right about the floor, don't worry about it. People will be tracking in all kinds of dirt and leaves and pine needles, you just need to have some throw rugs to wipe off on at the door, then you can shake the dirt out and put them back. Keep one outside too, to keep shoes on. Hey, did this thing have an awning?? Now I have to go back and look at the pics again.
T
;)

Nope no awning, but you can fashion one froma  tarp and a few old tent poles if you want one, it isn't hard to do.

Congrats on the new-to-you popup B!

It looks like an 8' model as the bunkends seem to be the same size. A similar layout to our Taos.

I hope it's not too heavy for you to tow. The older models were built like tanks to last but were also very heavy.

Post by: birol on May 04, 2004, 05:31 PM
But it seems to have two dinettes ! The tire is 2" and the full length of the PU is 13.5" (as measured on the screen), No idea what is the actual width of the tire would be, what does that ratio make it to be ? 8' or 10' ? Any help there ???

If the wheel is 1.5' (wide ) I mean from one side to the other side looking at it sideways  (resaonable ? too big ? ) 6.75*1.5 would make it to bs a 10' or 11' box right ? if the size is two feet wide ? Dunno if it can be, it is a 12' box no ?

Starmaster-8 floorplan, though they may have called it something different in 1968. My dad had the same trailer, and I had the same unit (mine was 1978). It is indeed a 10' box.

It does indeed have two dinette's, one at each end. The forward one is the easiest to use, the rear one can be hard to get in & out of. When I used mine, I added a cleat to the outside of the trailer, and placed the rear dinette table on the outside, then utilized the seat benches on the rear dinette on galley side for extra kitchen stuff, and the opposite bench for storing suitcases, clothing etc. There should also be a porta-potty cabinet on the rear door side dinette seat as well (which I know Birol now has one of them things). I don't remember my dad's 1968 having a 12v power converter, but it was wired for 115vac shore hook-up's. If Birol wants to add a converter it's not that hard to do.

Roof as a center seam, and should have a roof vent located over the stove top. Those will be the two primary places where a leak could occur. If it does have soft wood, don't freak out, the old Starcrafts are rebuildable (and usually still usable as-is).

I'd highly recommend lubricating the lifter pulleys, and will be glad to tell ya how to get at them. Failure to do so could result in failed pulley which will bust a cable fast. A couple hours of work will save lots of money in the long run. You'll need to find a special screw driver bit, it's called a 'Clutch Screw' and is a bit strange. I've found some 'square' bits work in the factory screws, and a small straight blade driver might work too.

All Right!!

Birol, you'll be in Mass to pick it up?  Wanna stay the night in the back yard "popped up"??  The offer is open, just let us know!  DH can meet you there if you like!  (plus then we'll be the 1st ones to see it!!)  :p   I'm sooooo glad for you - what a deal!

I think it has a dinette and what's refered to as a "gaucho couch".  The main couch part has a slide out platform so you can fold down the cushions to make another bed.

I really think it's a 10 foot box.  An 8 foot wouldn't seem to have enough for two full sized beds PLUS a gaucho couch/bed and a dinette bed.  The old 67 Skamper had this same floorplan and was 10 foot box.  Everything seems to be in the same place.

Nope... I recognize the trailer from the pictures. Having had one myself, and my father having one when I was a kid, this trailer is more than familar to me, I could pick this one out in the dark while wearing a blindfold! :D This is the dual dinette Starmaster-8 (I think they called it the Constellation in 1968 though).

Front wall has those two cubby holes, in the new ones (1978) the left side cubby hole is where they mounted the 12v converter, so I don't think he's got a converter in this trailer (my dad's didn't either - same year, same model)...

If I'm not mistaken, this trailer should be equipped with surge brakes! Both mine and my dad's had them... But didn't look like I saw a surge control on the tongue in the pictures.

Looks pretty clean in the pictures. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

My wife bought a '77 Jayco, which we had for a little over a year. It was named "Daisey." It was small (8 foot box), and in decent shape. It sure beat sleeping on the floor, and since it was basic, there was nothing that needed maintenance. And, very light and easy to tow. And, the paranoia of damaging it was pretty low... a scratch here or there... no big deal.

One funny thing about it was, that after setting it up, with us in the bunk end, the frame would kind of sag. (we are not little, but also not huge folks). This would cause the gap for the door latch to get wider, to the point that the door would swing open in the middle of the night. Our first weekend out, we camped with our Indian Princess group, and we thought they were playing tricks on us. The next time out was in Sequoia, and we thought, maybee the bears are playing tricks on us!  :yikes:

We'd still have it, but we were made an offer we couldn't refuse on our freind's Coleman, which we now have. We sold our to a nice couple in Orange County... and we hope that they have been able to enjoy it.

You're going to love your classic popup, Birol.  Today, I saw 3 Starcrafts very similar to the one Birol got.  They were in the campground at a Bluegrass Fest.  I spotted them while doing my after supper walk to take a look at everyone's rigs.  Those Starcrafts had been lovingly cared for by the owners to the point they almost looked new......so clean and polished on the outside and the canvas looked good too.  I pointed them out to DH as we walked and said there's Birol's new to him popup.  LOL!  So, I say "Go Starcraft and go camping!" :)

I think I am going to really love it ! It really is a classic ! Almost Antique ! I intend to bring it to excellent shape and use it until I am bitten by the hybrid love ! I am sure it will sell for quite a few more dollars here in Ontario when I decide to sell it ! I intend to refinish all the cabinets inside and change the covers on cushions and mattresses ! that should give it a new look ! If the canvess is in bad shape, when I get a job, I will replcae that too and it will be like brand new !

You know you're a popup addict when the popup is cleaner than your house and gets washed more than the laundry.   Hmmmmm, time to revive and make a new thread. :D
