Title: Southern Coastal Maine Campgrounds
Post by: jeec0450 on Jun 01, 2004, 06:16 PM
We will be going back to Southern Maine this year and we were debating between Bayley's CG or Powder Horn near Old Orchard or staying at Well's Beach Resort.  We stayed at Bayley's a couple of years ago and had a good time but were thinking about trying out somewhere else.  Anyone have any recommendations or have stayed at Powder Horn?

Thanks,

Haven't stayed at Bayleys or Powder Horn, but HAVE stayed at Wells Beach Resort. I prefer Beach Acres when staying at Wells, ME.
WBR is pretty expensive, and while neither of them are really the type of camping we like to do (State Parks) Beach Acres does have some nice sites back in the trees. The only problem is you have to drive through the front "trailer park" to get to them and the Bathroom (spotless) is quite a walk from those sites.
WBR is also VERY strict! Not that I had problems with them, and not that I don't agree with the reasons for their rules, but I have heard others complain.

Though I think it's considered more Mid Coast than Southern Maine, Hermit Island is my favorite Maine Campground! Though, be WARNED, it's NOT for everyone! We were there this past weekend, by the way!
If you like the type of camping that a state or national park provides, then you will probably love Hermit Island. If you like evenly mowed grass, paved  or at least level sites, and activities, you'd probably be best suited elsewhere!
