The DW and I are tired of waiting for June, so we decided to find a CG that we can do a quick overnight campout. We found a CG that is 17 miles East of Lancaster called Saddleback Butte State Park. In my campground guide they give it an 8 out of 10 rating. The beauty of it is it will take longer to hook up the PU than it will to drive there since we live in Lancaster. Does anyone have the 411 on this place? Or has anyone ever been there?
can't say I have....but itsonly a weekend , give it a try and let the rest of us know how it is
Pounce....
Apparently this is not a very sought after CG. I talked to a neighbor that has been there and he said it was a barron desert. Mostly comprised of dirt and Joshua trees. Has good hiking though

hmmmmm sounds like most of Southern Cal...let me ask you this
are there any places to camp between you and Stockton. I did the "plan your itinerary" on the good sam site and they had some places near you one in Coalinga (but sounded far off the freeway) and nothing until Stockton..
I have no clue. Kristi bought me a big FAT campgrounds in California book but I haven't had a chance to study it. Maybe while we're camping next week I'll take a gander at it.
Brian,
Hey we did go there a couple of times but that was so long ago. I remember that is was not all that the "8" rating would indicate! How far did you want to travel? How about red rock canyon? Primitive area but a nice get-a-way.
I know of a place up in Tehacapi. I will find the web site and email to you later tonight. Never been there but the web site looked good. You can do alot with pictures but until you actualy get to a place and stay there you won't know how good or bad it is. There is another place about an hour away from us that we are liking alot! It's medium size and has a couple of small lakes to fish from f you are into that. Mostly relaxing and kids can enjoy the stream running thru the site on the lower level. I will see if I can find there web site also. It would about 2- 3 hour drive for you.

Brian,
As I mentioned in the last email reply I found one of the places I was talking about. http://www.quailvalleyrv.com/
Looking on the map It looks like you could get a more direct route to the campsite than what I have to do from my house. Still looking for the other site.
I also look at the big atlas and found at the center of the two pages a campground at the end of hwy 14 close to the 210 fwy. It is called placerita canyon s.p. There always castaic lake st. rc area.

That looks liek a pretty nice place, Bob. We may have to keep it in mind for one of the "Meet in the Middle" rallies with NNC!
Just curious, is the cg near your home that you like called Rivernook? I have been wanting to camp there now for a couple of years--ever since a dear friend almost killed me on a mt. biking expedition in the mountains near Kernville. But that's a whole 'nother post....
Brian,
I am finding some others including the one I could not think of. That one is:
http://www.indianhillranch.com/ up in Tehachapi. It's in the middle of our two homes. Never been but looks good.
And another one is just down the road from you in Acton of hwy 14.
It's web site is //www.calrv.com. I have not been there either but also looks good. Maybe we will have to test it out and report back to the group.
I will keep looking to see if I can find some more for your choosing!

I'd love to camp close to the water like that. Maybe this summer we can orchestrate a mini rally at one of those places. Just get the word out and let people show up.
Brian,
This was just a starting point. I hope I can find others in between where we live to try out. That is a good idea about having a mini rally. We have not done one (rally) yet but looking forward to it.
Which route are you thinking of taking to get to Pismo?

Lori,
The cg called Rivernook is near Kernville. We have not been there either. I can find places and make a notation to explore them at a later date. The one that we have been to a few times is the one called Quail Valley. Very nice and close to us; only an hour away. I tried to bring up the web site for rivernook but no luck so far but I don't give up very easily! Found another one by that name in Kettlemen city.
Now you will have to tell us the story about the mountian bike and your friend when we join up in Pismo.

I'm not sure yet. I was going to try the 138 west but my father in law said that raod was pretty rough so I may just go down to the 101 and over. Still kicking it around.
I really like that Indian Hill Ranch CG ! I will try that one this summer for sure. Plus it's only 54 miles from home.
I just drove the 138 from gorman to lancaster towing my seqouia on monday the road was fine. the poppies ar not in full bloom yet.

Well, my inlaws were driving an F-350. Not many roads are smooth in one of those
Brian,
So where did you guys end up going this last weekend? The campground up in Tehacapi looks really cool. We could meet you there if it is not short notice. I am going to take the 166 route to Pismo. Only one big hill to contend with. The gas prices had better start coming back down by the end of the month. We have one of the highest prices in the state. $2.64 for regular!!!
Bob.

We didn't go anywhere last weekend. Got the PU ready for the Vail Lake trip this weekend with Lori and Diedre's gang. As far as gas goes, I think you may start seeing more "Financing Available" signs in gas station windows.

Brian,
So sorry that you were not able to go this past weekend. I was hoping for a scouting report on where ever you ended up at.
It is amazing that gas prices continue upward and we haven't even hit the travel season yet! you are right about the "sign" in the gas station window!
I hope that this out of control does not lead to people canceling the Pismo trip.

I don't think so. It seems as though everyone signed up for Pismo are very excited about the trip (Including myself). It would take the gas prices to get really sideways to stop people from showing up to that rally.

Darn Straight..We're actually going all the way up to WA. before Pismo...I still think the gas price increase is still cheaper than hotels, where can you get a room for $25-$40 /night? (not anywhere I'd want to be). not to mention meal $$ saved, and the fun experiences you share together (like are we there yet?? every 10 min. :eyecrazy: ) the things you can see, nature in action..the chance to make new friends, create memories that will last a life time. :D
Deidre,
WHich route are you going to take? How much of the driving do you do? What do you usualy make in miles per day? Is it a trip that you have done before? That is all I wanted to know for now.

Going straight up the 5 fwy to Wa. then on the way back down I'm taking not sure of the hwy ## like 80 it's the one that goes west towards San Fran fro Sac. to the 101 to Pismo.
I'm the ONLY one that tows the Trailer and I plan on breaking the trip up into about 4 hours of driving a day. and the Farthest trip I've ever Taken was Last year to Pismo in the PU. the farthest I've towed the Hybrid so Far is San Diego.
I was raised very independant " not to rely on no Man" my mom taught me how to run a household and my Daddy tought me how to fix all the things that broke , how to kick butt, and how to fish and survive in the woods.
I must admit I have gotten more reliant over the years as far as fixing stuff, it's easier to pay someone else, but not when it comes to camping. :D
just in case your wondering Dh is a programmer/analyst as an independant contractor, no worky ..no pay he'll meet me on the weekeds. someone has to pay for camping :D

Brian,
I have to say what a great remark to Deidre. You will let me know how the trip turns out but I will also ask Deidre how you did on this trip.
