Title: Pie Irons??
Post by: Global Mom on May 07, 2005, 12:02 PM
Hi Everyone!!

I'm new here, we just bought our first (used) pop-up on Wednesday.  I am looking for any information you might have on the best pie irons out there and where we might purchase them.

We would also love to try out your favorite recipes!!

Thanks a bunch!!

I would have to say the best pie irons are the cast iron ones.  We purchased ours at Cabelas.  They have them in their catalog or in their store.  The cast iron ones have better heat distribution.   You may even be able to find them at your local Sporting goods chain store.

My favorite pie iron recipe is:

2 slices white bread.  Butter one side of each slice.  Place butter side down and place 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite pie filling.on top of one slice of bread.  Close pie iron and hold over coals of campfire.  Listen for them to sizzle and then open the pie iron CAREFULLY!!  "pie" is done when both sides are golden brown.  You could also try this with your favorite pizza toppings or deli ham and cheese.

Yes...buy cast iron. DO NOT even waste your money on the aluminum/steel ones.

We bought our current ones at Cracker Barrel, believe it or not, but haven't used this set much, but we will.

OK, we always used white bread, but now have been "converted".

Use crescent rolls from the tube.  JUst leave two crescent roll triangles together to  make a side.  Then use your favorite pie filling; it is wonderful.

Thanks so much for the info!!  We have a Cracker Barrel right here in town ... will check this week.  Unfortunately, all the good little camping stores in our area are gone   :(

I had heard of using bread and fruit filling for pies ... but we will definitely try the crescent rolls!!  Sounds great!!

Thanks again!!

We got ours from the PUT store.  You get a 10% discount.  They have a cookbook too.  So far we've made dessert, the same way Jacque described, but we add cinnamon sugar to the outside of our bread and when done we sprinkle it with powdered sugar.  YUM!!

We have cast iron--settle for nothing less!  We bought ours from the Lodge Web site, since PUT didn't have them in their store yet.  Otherwise, we always patronize PUT if we can. :)

We like to make something we call a "pudgie buddie" which is peanut butter, marshmallow and chocolate bar inside the two slices of bread buttered on the outside.  Yum!

Lori, that sounds yummy to me, but it'll never get fixed with Paula around.

Is she allergic to all nuts, or only peanuts?  If only peanuts, maybe you could substitute the peanut butter with cashew or almond butter.

I make a version of "Stuffed French Toast"--

Dip bread in your favorite french toast mix (eggs, a little sugar, cinnamon, dab of milk).  Spray the inside of both sides of the pie iron with no-stick spray, put in the soaked bread.  Add a dollop of cream cheese and another of your favorite jelly or fruit spread.  Close and lock the pie iron and bake till browned.

Here is a source of a few recipes for Pie irons, among others:

Hmmm.  They have the cookbook, but not the pie irons anymore.  Well, it's off to Wal-Mart with you!   Pretty much the only rule with them is to butter the outside of the bread (the part that touches the pie iron) and stuff it with whatever makes your mouth water.
