Title: FL State Parks--St. Joseph or St. George?
Post by: altozwei on Jun 04, 2005, 09:39 AM
We have a trip planned to Ft. Wilderness but want to spend a couple of days at the beach on the way home. We are trying to decide between these two campgrounds. Would like to get some first-hand info on what they are like and which one you would recommend.

We liked St. Joe better.  More remote, sites were more spacious.  However, if you need to be near a town or grocery store, etc. St. George may be more to your liking.  It is a nice campground but sites seemed too closely packed together.

Not been to St. Joe, St. George is nice.  Everytime we want to camp at St. Joe, I call the park and they tell me the mosquitos are horrible.  :(  So, we haven't tried it yet.

What about St. Andrews state park in Panama City Beach???

We were interested in camping there recently, and I called to learn that the park has never reopened following Hurricane Dennis. They had a lot of damage and do not know when they will reopen. Hope this helps.

Got this off the St. George website:

Manager's Message

Immediately after the damage caused by Hurricane Dennis in July of 2005 reconstruction plans were under way to rebuild the park. Debris removal is complete. A total of 340 tons of debris has been removed by park staff and 64,000 cubic yards of sand has been moved from roadways including the East End access road which will remain closed until further repairs can be completed.
The new park office has been completed and is now open. Construction of two beach restrooms, boardwalks, parking areas and four miles of paved roads has been completed and is now open to the public for use. Come and enjoy the new facilities and a day at the beach.
All camping (including youth and primitive) will remain closed until further notice. Advanced reservations are now being taken for November 1, 2006 forward. For park updates or other information, please call our office at (850)927-2111.
