Title: Fountains Discovered on Saturn's Enceladus
Post by: AustinBoston on Dec 05, 2005, 07:29 AM
Fountains Discovered on Saturn's Enceladus (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap051205.html)

Saturn's moon Enciladus joins Earth, Jupiter's moon Io, and Neptune's moon Triton as the fourth body in the solar system known to have some form of active vulcanism.  In the case of Enciladus, it's the only one that spews ice.

Earth has lava volcanoes and water and steam geysers.

Io has sulfur volcanoes that shoot as high as 50 miles.

Triton has steam-like geysers of liquid nitrogen, some apparently rise as much as six miles into Triton's thin atmosphere.

And now, Enciladus has been found to have jets of ice crystals, some of which shoot high enough to escape it's gravity and become part of Saturn's rings.

I'm not sure, but it would probably be limited to hardsides.  It would be a wee bit cold in a pop-up.

There's not much wind, though, and without an atmosphere, one would not be able to hear the complaints from one's spouse!

21 degrees? Hasn't been that warm around here in over a week!  We're expecting lows tonight below zero again.

Austin (it's definitely winter in Minnesota)

Yeah, but just imagine the view!  Wonder what it would cost in gas to tow that far?  Probably need a new tow vehicle, too.  The drive alone would be worth the trip.  (How many horsepower did you say you have?) :p Hardside?  Who wants to move to a hardside?  We PUPers love challenges.  Just think about the mods that we'll have to develop.  Talk about dry camping!  The grey water problem would disappear, just vent the crystals!  Sounds like fun.  Lets start a new camping group.  Call it Campers of the Enchiladas.  We can have our rally in February.  Weather wouldn't be a factor and we can fill in this dead time.  Out of this world!

BTW, it's Enceladus, not Echiladas.  Pronounced en-sil-AHD-us.  Nobody at JPL is sure if it has Cool Ranch or Bleu Cheese dressing on it, though.

The change from Enceladus to Enchiladas was intentional.  The two words are so close in pronounciation that I just had to do it.  It was intended to be a humorous post.  Just having fun trying to put a little "spice" into things.

That's what the Cool Ranch is for.
