Title: Awning Mod Question
Post by: kykamper on Apr 28, 2006, 09:29 AM
Instead Of The Having The Poles To The Awing On The Ground I Would Like To Have Them Attach The The Frame...kinda Like They Are On Hybrids...

We Camp W/ Dogs & Keep Them On A Leash.  They Are Always Getting Tangled Up In The Poles And Pulling Them Down.

Can This Be Done???

Thank You So Much

In order to accomplish that we  just replaced the one that came with the camper.  I believe the one we have is the Carefree Campout.  Much easier to set up than the factory model and the supports attach to the camper.

Hi,

The short answer is yes it can be done. However, doing it is probably a little more complicated.

A lot will depend on how you will anchor the poles to the PUP.

Think it out, plan it, and do it.

If I had kept our PUP, I might have tried this: Find brackets that are a little larger that the diameter of the support poles, mount them in the appropriate places, use a pin with a locking clip, and drill a hole thru the pole and bracket to hold things in place. You will still need the rafter poles.
Best of luck in this venture.

Check out MtnCamper (http://gmcamping.tripod.com/id13.html)  I believe he has exactly what you are looking for.
This is a mod I have planned for myself.

This looks like a great mod from mtncmpr and I am considering doing it for our camper.

We have a 1998 fleetwood/coleman with an add-a-room.  If anyone out there has done this modification using the AAR please get back to me.
I corrisponded with mountaincamper a wile back but he said he didn't think the AAR would work with this mod.  Any brave souls out there?

I haven't done this mod yet and I don't have the AAR. But having the AAR in place I would think you would need the poles in the original position because of the extra weight. Besides you now have walls what do you gain? :(

What you gain is not having to deal with the ropes.  Not only that but the model we have has the three poles going to the ground.  unless you are on perfectly level ground it is a nightmare to get all of the poles to sit on the ground.  The holes and pins on the poles always seem to be a little bit off.  Get one pole just right and then look to the other end and that pole is swinging in the breeze.  Go back and make an adjustment...
.....now the middle pole is up off the ground.  Very frustrating.
