Hi
We never camped at Old Forge, but while we were camping at Cranberry Lake we  stopped in Old Forge,on our way to Rome,NY,to pick up my black Labrador.
I remember a lot of people,a lot of stores(Antique?) and the dirtiest McDonald's I have ever seen'(the cleanest was in Massena,NY) No ,I don't do surveys on McD's,it was just two extremes on the same trip.
I seem to remember that someone on this board mentioned ,that the campgrounds and surrounding area's are very nice.
I guess it depends on the kind of camping you like to do.
Resorts are usually overrun and the sites are small. We have camped in Resort type campgrounds and they are fine, but we prefer the more laid back camping.
Hope this helps.

Andy
