Title: Make it darker for sleeping
Post by: racingmom on Jun 16, 2006, 12:01 PM

Is there anyway to hang something (blanket, sheet), on the inside of the sleeping ends so that it's not so bright in the AM?  I thought about running a blanket over the center bar, but I don't want to use pins to attach it to the sides.

check out an old thread on
bunk end covers (http://www.arveeclub.com/showthread.php?t=57503&highlight=gizmos)  Not only do they keep the beds areas cooler, they also darken the bed ends.  ;)

We drape a tarp over the outside of the bunk that we sleep in to darken it when camping in a place that has a lot of nightime light pollution or if we're out in the open rather than in our prefered spots in the woods.

I have to vote for the bunk end covers.  Used ours only twice, but definitely noticed the difference both times.  Also, we have purchased solar shades for the windshield of your car.  We have them inserted between the screen and the window covering on the bunk ends.  They help a lot too.

I have been meaning to try the car windshield shades but haven't been willing to pay $6.88 each which is the best price I have found so far.
I'm still looking for a better price.  I think they will help a lot with the light coming in the sides.

I discovered this problem with a rude awakening the first morning I slept in my Hybrids bunk end. The canvas if VERY white, and it was like having a flourescent light turned on a few inches from your face. Little did I like the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn...I leave that activity to others!!

I bought a large roll of reflectix (same stuff as they make those reflective windshield covers out of), the roll cost $45 at Lowes, is 4' x 25' and enough to do both bunk ends and have some left over.

They drape over the top on the outside of the canvas, and then you just use little clips around the outside edges to hold it all in place. They hold up well even in the wind. They do a great job of cutting light, and even better at reflecting sunlight and keeping the tent ends cooler.

I also cut a few pieces to go around the inside along the walls of the bunk ends. The very end piece actually has the top that tucks in under the 'conestoga' pole, and the sides seem to stay in place with the mattress pressing against them. My bunk ends are nice and dark.

Now this makes it a problem if you like to open the windows! But I'm in a hot & humid climate and find it more comfortable with the a/c running. On the few occassions where an open window is used, the other windows seem to be enough to satisfy my needs.

I do not have a .99 cent store, but we do have a Dollar Tree and I went there, they don't have them
I also tried big lots (6.95) and Wal Mart ($6.88)
I'll try Wal Mart again, maybe they were just out of the $2.88 ones when I was there.
Thanks!
Sherry

I purchased my car shades and made my PU shades 2 years ago.  I bought the shades at a Big Lots store for $3 (large shades) and $2 (small shades).  They make a big difference in making the bunk end darker and keeping the heat/ac in the camper.  I have pics of my mod on my Webshots page, linked below.:)
