Title: Cabela's camp kitchen
Post by: jmmrda on Jun 08, 2007, 03:03 PM
Does anyone have any experience with a cabela's camp kitchen? My Dh picked one up today brand new for $80 from someone on craigslist. Curious if anyone else uses one.

One of the guys we go camping with has one and it is very handy. He also has an attachment for it to hang a roll of paper towels and a garbage bag that clips onto the back corner. He paid 99 or 119 for it (I don't quite remember), a bit pricey for me, but for 80 bucks you can't go wrong. I use a rolltop aluminum table that is about the same size (from Cabelas about 70 bucks) but it doesn't have the bottom shelf or the rack to hang utensils.

I had one similar, Sams club sold it a few years back. did not have the canvas bags that the Cabelas one had then.  I loved it, down side was that it is SOOOOO Heavy. I donated it last year to our Rally's silent auction because I generally camp alone and it was just too heavy for me to drag around.

We have the instant camp kitchen, like the one from cabella's and camping world.   Funny thing, Camping World's is $100.00 Cabella's 69.99 and Kmart has the same thing for 49.99 (which I bought 2 at 39.99 for dh and father-in-law).
It hold's a roll of paper towels and cooking utensils, comes in a bag and works great at the end of a picnic table.

Yes, and that camp kitchen has quite a history by now!

Don't know which kitchen you are talking about. The 1 we have has hanging pantries, sink, poles for lanterns, overhead shelf.
Pantries, can't store food that low in a canvas bag,get on your knees to see what is in them. Bent some pipe to set them on unused rear bunk, clothes.
Put bungee under the top shelf, behind cuphooks for papertowles, don't get wet in rain or carpet the campsite in wind. I added a pair of teliscoping poles to 1 of the lantern hooks and hang the Zodi there.
After 3 years of working harder to level the kitchen than to level the PUP I removed the 2 foldout tables so I can level 4 spots instead of 8. Seprate tables are easier to level. Mod 1 table to mount on the stove rail.
All in all I think we get our use out of it. As far as weight, WE never put it all back in the bag, just lift the parts.

I just bought the one at K-mart (and it is exactly like the one in Cabella's and at Camping World) for $39.99 this past weekend.  Not sure why it is so much more elsewhere.  Even at the regular price, you would save at least $20 buying at K-mart.

We have the same one with the side tables, sink and hanging cupboard.  We quit using it because it was so heavy also.

Kmart has the Northwest Territories table (like Cabelas and Camping World) on sale thru 6/16/07 for $39.99. Just called our nearest store and they still have a few left. I might give this a try. The roll out table gets too cluttered and I'd like somewhere to hand the utensils and a roll of paper towels.

We bought this one from Kmart last year.  http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_9990000088974911P?keyword=camping&vName=Tools+%26+Outdoors&cName=Fitness+%26+Sports&sName=Fitness+%26+Sports

It's served us well, and we don't even take the pups factory burners with us anymore.

Only problem is that the top is some sort of metal, and grills/burners want to slide around on them.  Fixed that by buying a cheap roll of that rubber stuff you put under rugs to keep them from sliding.  Worked like a charm!

We still take two of the roll out wooden top tables, and disposable tablecloths for them.

I've used this grill table for two longer trips now and I love it. It frees up my roll table for other uses and I like that it has hangers and a paper towel hanger so i don't have to keep going in and out of the camper.

I keep our Coleman Grillin' grill on the top shelf, extra propane tank on the lower shelf, along with aluminum foil and two of my Lodge fry pans. The side tables are really very handy.

My only complaint is that it's a bit short for me. Blaise is going to see if he can cut some 4"x4" material and router some holes to hold the ends of the legs to give it some extra height.

Had no idea of this camping gear outfit until reading about them on this Arvee Club link.
Now I am real curious. I found the cast iron walled griddle - do you then buy the 2-burner cast iron stove to fit under it? Plus guessing you have to buy the hose and regulator - or can we use the one that is coming out of the side of the box on the popup for outside cooking? Would love to be able to cook the eggs, bacon on one griddle. If I got the three burner stove, then I could blacken my toast on the third burner while the chef is active on the other two burners?
Thanks for the heads-up on the camping website for Cabelas's.
Dave

I agree, most of the tables / stands are too short for me - I'm 5'10 and have back problems - one of the reasons I seldom cook actually IN the camper.  We often use a small weber grill, campfire or propane stoves.

I did get one of those aluminum roll-top tables after a friend brought one along on a canoe trip - it sure was nice to be able to prep food up OUT of the sand - even if the table was a little short.  I picked it up at WalMart for about $30 - it's just about the size of a small card table.  Since our PUP doesn't have the outside table, (but does have a ledge for one) we set it up under the awning while using the camper - it made a nice place for snacks and kept the crumbs out of the camper.

I'd like to figure out a way to make it a little taller, though - and keep it light weight - I was thinking maybe PVC pipe leg extensions?  they could slide down to store in the bag with the table pretty easily.

Laura - take a gander at these tables. They were just ordered and will give you a review as soon as we get them - next couple days according to UPS?

And my hat is off to you Laura for your rebuild of the popup. Looking at some of the conditions I would have been dropping that item off at the landfill. My compliments to you!

Love your Golden Retriever - they are marvelous animals. We now have a full sized red Doberman but did not have the ears clipped - it is so cruel - so the dog has a much softer, gentler animal look about him. People actually approach without fear until they hear the word Doberman but by then Prince Redford has licked them and made friends. They are extremly bright animals - sometimes I think smarter than my 5 kids!

I have almost given up on the kitchen centers competely. Donated my big one last year to the Eastern rally silent auction, still have my first one, from alumnalite. cannot get it wet because the aluminum is supported by masonite.
I have my Kmart one that is the smaller and less appointed version of the Cabellas one, and presently I use my picnic table and bought a camper pal. It clamps on to the campsite picnic table, has a place for a lantern, paper towel, condiment basket AND a place to tie on a garbage bag.  All for around $15.00.  The camp kitchens for the most part are too short for me too. I carry a fold in half plastic table I think it is one of the 4' ones, though I do not use it often, BUT it is there if I need it.

ScouterMom,

I agree with you about table height and I am a good deal shorter than you are!  Most picnic tables are very low for some reason, not good for cooking.  The grill stand from Kmart (and the same one from Cabella's) is 32" inches high, a regular counter is 36.  This is the tallest "camping kitchen" I have every found which is why I bought it (got mine at Kmart).  It makes things a lot easier as it is much taller than most folding tables.

My wife got one for me from cabellas a few years back.  Its not quite as fancy as the new ones.  It has a central table that can hold a camp stove and a rack for hanging cook tools.  It also has two lower sides which we only use one as it becomes way two big with both sides set up.  We find it fabulous, and use it even on short weekend trips.  It stows nicely in the front truck of our Coleman cheyenne.  We also get quite a few inquires while we're camping.

Here is our setup in 2 attached pics. We picked up the kitchen at a K-mart closeout years ago when our local K-mart closed. It was 1/3 the price of the identical one from L.L. Bean at the time. It is heavy, but we often dry camp for up to 2 weeks at a time and it really makes life easy. We keep the picnic table outside and use the little rollup table and 2 to 4 small chairs.

Back in my tent camping days I used mine and fellow campers were in love with it (some even got one).  We did 2 week family reunion camping trips, and that kitchen was a luxury.  Still have it.

We have been looking at getting some sort of "extra" table to use with getting our meals prepared.
We looked at a couple of different ones and finally decieded on the Coleman Pack-Away Kitchen.
got it for $65 or so and it works great.  It is very sturdy and comes with a three year warrenty so you really can't beat it.
