Title: pickwick dam, arkabutla, and heber springs
Post by: munchkin on Jun 21, 2007, 07:28 PM
I found conflicting reviews of Pickwick Dam state Park in TN. Any opinions?

Also, Arkabutla, Ms. Core of Engineers Park opinions? Any activities?

Lastly, what about Heber Springs? Any activities?

Thanks!

Here are reviews from tpuc.com:

First review:
I have not camped at either campground down there but I have checked them out. But the one on the north side of the dam below the dam, not the state park appeared to me to be the better one. I was not impressed with the state park campground at all. I think that CampingCrazy told me that there is a really nice campground on the water but if I remember there was no hookups. I think it was called ------ Creek, something creek. About 40 minutes north of Picwick there is a nice private campground in Lexington TN, Beech Lake Family Camping Resort. They have 8-10 sites right on the water. You can fish out your backdoor. You are within walking distance anywhere in the campground. The campground is on the northwest side of Lexington about 20 minutes from I-40. Of course east of Lexington is Natchez Trace State Park and they have three campgrounds, a couple of them have sites on the water for easy fishing. I don't know if any of this helps anyone or not but that's my two cents worth. Gerald

Second review:
I have camped at the campground below the dam many times and it is a very popular spot for fisherman. The campground that Gerald was referring to is Bruton's Branch at Pickwick. They also have a small playground for the kids and a swimming area (rocky -- so wear shoes) It is part of the state park. Primitive sites -- no water or electric hookups. Bath house is older and has 2 showers and toilets on each side, but it is clean and you can get water at outside faucet there. People even take their coffee pots to the bath house and use the outside electricity to make coffee and those in tents to blow up air mattresses. This is on Pickwick lake and the view is AWSOME. Many HIGH DOLLAR!!!! homes in the area that you can see by boat. Lots of sites within 20 - 25 feet of the water and LOTS OF SHADE all over. Sounds like you are at the ocean at night. Always a breeze blowing. They do lots of sailing on the lake. Fishing is great. Several places to put your boat in and lots of people will anchor them at night a few feet out in the water. If you don't mind not having electricity and water at your site -- this campground is a must just because of the view. The lights at the dam are very pretty at night and nights with full moons are beautiful. We camp there several times a year 3 - 5 nights at a time. It can fill up quick. They usually open the 1st of April. They have a link on Pickwick State Park website or they did at one time -- you can call the park for info and we would be glad to give you directions. Very easy to get to and about 15 minutes from a super Walmart.

Hope this helps.

Larry
