Title: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Post by: mjsmith1223 on Jul 14, 2007, 04:55 PM
I'm giving some thought to heading to Pictured Rocks mid-September-ish.  Just wondering if anyone who has been there might have some advice to help someone who's never been there.  I've camped on the shores of Lake Superior many times, so I know it can get cold.

Great chioce of parks!
also been there early June and it was cold.  not bad the time in mid-August, though.

On the don't-miss list id a day hike, I think it's  12-14 mniles, but worth it.  4 miles to Chapel rock, 4 miles along the lakeshore and 4 miles or so back.  passes 2 nice falls.

Here is a link to our photos, 1st 6 are from that hike:

Wow.  Great pics.  Lake Superior was a little grouchy in some of those.

We LOVE that area of Michigan.  We've only been up there in early / mid July, so I'm not sure about temperatures in September.  It might be chilly at night by then.

We have camped at Muskallonge Lake State Park  (http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/ParksandTrailsInfo.aspx?id=424) on two different occasions.
It's 17 East of Grand Marais on H-58.  (Dirt Road, though we don't mind)  It's a bit of a drive from Pictured Rocks, but worth checking out if you're up there.  We like Grand Marais more than Munising.  :)

The Chapel Rock hike is wonderful, it's a very nice trail.  The hike out to Au Sable Point Lighthouse (http://www.exploringthenorth.com/ausable/ausable.html) is also worth the trip.

It's just awesome up in the U.P.!   :D

good eyes!  50mph winds that day - gail warning.  we could hear the waves pounding the rocks about 1-1/2 miles from the lakeshore that day.  we did get a little sand blasted during some areas of the hike along the lakeshore.
