Title: A Photo Thread
Post by: Russinator on Aug 17, 2007, 10:35 AM
I was wondering if having a thread where we could all post a few pictures would be a good idea? The joke thread seems to be doing good.

I'll start it and we'll see how it goes. If anyone is interested, please add your photos.

I'll start it with a few pictures I took in Colorado a few months back. I used Photoshop Elements to make this collage.

I've always wanted to see Yosemite right after a snow storm. This year we finally did it. This is the view from HWY 41, right after exiting the tunnel.

On this camp trip we left the POP at home. We were in a Riverside County Campground near Idyllwild, CA. We were the only campers in the park, but there was a couple down the way [day use area] that were drunk, got in a fight and made lots of noise. After a while the ranger made them leave. I understood why he wanted them out of the park, but didn't understand why he let them drive--they were wasted.

Last March we were in Yosemite, right after a snow storm.

Your pics of Yosemite are fantastic. You've got a great eye, and must have a superb camera!

We ski Badger Pass (in Yosemite) every winter and have a great time...as well as some great winter driving stories from being up there during huge snow storms, and immediately after!  During the big one in Feb '06, it was snowing all the way down here in San Luis Obispo (sea level and 10mi from the ocean) if that gives you an idea of how bad it was at 7,000' at Yosemite.  Awesome!  I had both the front and the rear of the 4x4 Suburban shod in snow cables!  Great times!

This is what was left of Hwy 41 about 8 miles from the South Entrance. Under that layer of snow was glare ice.

Here's the whole family and even my 65 year old mom comes with us! Awesome little family ski area.

Thanks for the kind words. My camera is nothing special, it's a middle of the road point and shoot. The main reason I got it was for it's zoom lens [12X digital] for taking pictures of my kids and grandkids surfing.

Here's another picture I took in Yosemite. If you look close you'll see our DD standing at the base of the tree.

Thanks for the kind words. I once read that the only difference between a good photographer and an average photographer was that the good one only shows his good pictures, whereas the average one shows them all. I don't believe that to be true, however, it does have some merit.

My point and shoot camera is a Konica Minolta Dimage Z3. It's a 4.0 mega pixel camera with a 12X zoom lens. In 35mm camera lingo the zoom lens would be 35 to 420. When I bought the camera 12X was the strongest available for a point and shoot camera. That might not be true today.

I did a google search and found this site http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/minolta/dimage_z3-review/index.shtml

Hey Russ... do you ever take it out and 4-wheel it on moderate trails?
Title:
Post by: Russinator on Sep 10, 2007, 03:52 PM
Funrover, when I bought it my plan was to take it off road, at least, once a month. That never came to be, I just can't tear myself away for the beach and surfing. I've been thinking of doing Baja, that way I could do some off roading on the way to the beach.

The only time I've had it in anything challenging was the first time, and that was a mistake. With it being our first time off road [in the van] we took a trail that was rated as easy and 90 minutes from start to finish.

I figured 90 minutes I'd be able to make it with 12 gallons of gas easy, 12 gallons of gas is 1/4 tank, I have a 46 gallon tank. We took off on this trail and 5 hours later we were still on it. When the sun started to go down we decided to park and camp for the night.

As we were setting up our camp the ranger just happened to drive by. He stopped to see who we were and if we were okay. I asked him how much further the trail went. He figured we'd come up from the south [wrong, we came from the north]. He said the road north of us had been washed out from the last rain storm and I'd never make it in the van. When I told him that's the way we got to where we were he couldn't believe it.

Anyway, we spent the night there, it was beautiful, over looking the Pacific Ocean with a full moon. In the morning we packed up and 20 minutes later we were in Santa Barbara getting some gas.

Below is a picture of an easy section of the trail that took us to our campsite. The lower picture is where we spent the night.

Holy Cow that Van is crazy doing all that!

Sorry, no pics of the K5 crew, but looks just like the above with the Rovers, 'cept Moab looks like the surface of the moon.  They've got one member who's built such a big website that he finally quit his job, and the website has become both his hobby and his income!

Here's the one shot I've got of his rig.  His roommate builds these sliders that you see mounted, and they've become sort of an industry standard.

I'm the guy in the water [top right photo]. I'm playing with my grandson. I'm also the guy in the chair. The girl by the van is my wife [she's 5'4]. Yes, the van is that tall and my wife has problems getting in and out of it, but she's a trouper and doesn't complain.

T6-Water Skiers - This would take a light touch on the stick!!!

Early morning anglers are treated to the spectacle of four T6 Harvard Aircraft from The Flying Lions Aerobatic Team water-skiing across the Klipdrift Dam near Johannesburg South Africa.

Lead by Scully Levin, with wingmen Arnie Meneghelli, Stewart Lithgow and Ellis Levin, this renowned airshow display team rehearse a sequence for the newly launched "Aviation Action" television program on Supersport.

Arnie Meneghelli from Academy Brushware, owner of the aircraft, had this to say, "What we did today I believe is a world first. It illustrates that South African airshow pilots are amongst the best in the world."

This unusual act, approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and supported by Castrol Aviation, was meticulously planned and took place under the watchful eye of divers and paramedics that were on site.

I took this picture as we were whale watching in Baja's Mag Bay.

We were in a boat exactly like the one in this picture.

In this picture what you're seeing is a baby whale spraying water all over a person. In all the times I've been whale watching in Baja, this is the only time I've seen this happen. We all got a good laugh out of it, including the guy who was sprayed.

I like the Alaska image too, but it could use just a bit of Photoshop-ing.

Here is what I would do:

First, I would level the horizon.
Then, I would crop some of the wake off the bottom, so that the horizon is only 1/3 up from the bottom, not halfway.
Third, I would reduce the blue cast slightly.

Sometimes, after reducing a color, I find I want to increase the color saturation a little.  I would have to see it, then decide.

If you'd like, I can give it a try and show you the results.

Hello Austin.

I already spend way too much time on the web; please don't give me more sites to visit or forums to read .................. If that's the case, you'll want to stay away from the Elements site. I check it twice a day and really enjoy it.

BTW, now that I'm looking at the image with my el cheapo monitor at work, I can only barely see the color difference in the dark areas ............... I didn't want to say anything, but that was my feeling too--on our laptop. If I can get my wife off the desktop, I'll have to give it a look on the good PC.

I'm thinking real hard about switching from our Windows XP to an iMac with CS3. The thing that's stopping me is the money [about $3,000]. My wife and my sisters think I should make the switch, but I'm not sure yet.

Funrover, those are some great pictures. It looks like you were having a great time.

Nope, I didn't get any photos from the past. My grandparents have both passed. My aunt got all their things [pictures and all]. When I asked her about them she said she didn't know where they were and didn't feel like looking.

When I asked her about family history she said she knew nothing about it.

When I was a little boy, I was a regular "Dennis The Menace" and she has never forgiven me. I guess this is her way of paying me back.

Tulomne Meadows, one of my favorite places.

Speaking favorite places, I also like the beach.

I took the top picture on Monday and the 2nd picture this morning [Wednesday].

As you can see the smoke and ash has made a beautiful place not so pretty.

Thank you. They were taken in the Old Forge, NY area. Actually, at the Old Forge Camping Resort. We had a nice relaxing trip. We did a little hiking also, but the Bald Mountain day was quite overcast:

My DW leading the way:

The best color shot I could get on a dreary day:

But I'm not complaining- any day camping and hiking is better than a sunny day at work.
I'm very impressed with the pictures I 've seen here. It's hard to believe that they were taken with a Point & Shoot.
Keep posting.

Russ,
Nice looking Rottie. We had to put ours down a year and a half ago due to bone cancer. I couldn't bring myself to get another for quite a while. Finally, the better half prevailed and we got a female pup in June. Her name is Molly. She has quite a way to go to get to the size of yours. Actually, she probably won't get that big based on the size of the parents.

Russ you take AMAZING photos.  These were all taken with a point and shoot?  Unbelievable.  Did you use filters or do any editing?  Even if ya did, they're beautiful.  I've got a weakness for the mountains.  Being from Ohio all we have around here are mole hills.  I went "out west" with my parents when I was a kid, so those pics bring back special memories for me.  I vow to take DH and DD there someday.

But thanks for sharing all of your beautiful pictures!!

Russ you take AMAZING photos ........... Kelly: Thanks for the kind words.

These were all taken with a point and shoot ............... Yes, just a P&S.

Did you use filters or do any editing ........... No filters. In my earlier posts I used Photoshop Elements to make color corrections. Since then I got a new iMac and CS3. I use that software to make the pictures look the way I remember the sky, landscape, etc actually looking. For some reason my P&S doesn't take the color as it actually is.

Even if ya did, they're beautiful ............. Thank you.

Post by: Russinator on Jan 03, 2008, 09:50 AM
In case I haven't said it yet, Happy New Year to you wonderful people.

I've lived in Southern California all my life. Part of celebrating the new year, in SoCal, is the Rose Parade.

I have no idea if other parts of the country even know about out little parade. The floats are spectacular and made entirely from plants, plant parts and flowers. Of course, the float frames are mostly metal.

After the parade they park all the floats in an area where the public can see them up close. In some cases as close as 3 feet and no more then ten feet.

One goal I have set for myself is to avoid crowds; however, yesterday I put that goal aside and went to Pasadena [with DW] to see the floats.

You can see in the picture below a few of the people who had the same idea.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Russinator43/RoseParadeFloats2008/photo#5151284130298082834

After you get there, if it interests you, I recommend viewing them via the slideshow link.

I grew up in SD.  I've been to Rushmore many, many times.  You can't really explain it to people.  You have to go and see it.  You need to go see it in the day and go to a night time lighting of it as well.  It is two very different experiences.  While you are there you can go over and see Crazy Horse as well.  Crazy horse is so big you could fit Rushmore and Stone Mountain GA in the space between his arm and the back of the horse.  He is way big.  Only in America do men dream of and actually carve mountains.  God Bless America and the men who make and keep her!

Go open a //www.photobucket.com account.

Upload large photos to your album.  Once those are uploaded, photobucket will give you several windows with urls in them.  Select the one that says something like "img" url and that will give you the code that works on our message forum:

It will look like this:  "img   http://www.photobuckblahblahblah.com  /img"  but won't have the quotation marks of course, and where the "img" word is, you put the [ and ] around it.

You copy and past that all here and then when you post you thread, you'll get your photo.....full size like you see people have posted just above.

Post by: K_and_I on Jun 14, 2008, 08:28 PM
Thank you, Austinado16 for your kind words. We are kind of partial to the girls. Here are a few photos from the camping trip. We were at Turkey Run State Park in Western Indiana. I took these pictures Friday before the big storm hit. The campgrounds lost power for about 28 hours; a pop-up about 200 yards down from us had a tree fall on it, and several trucks had trees fall on them. Overall, other than a few minor inconveniences, we made it through OK.

Here is the campsite before the storm. After the storm, the camper was sitting in about 4" of water:

Quote from: K_and_IShepherd, that is a great photo. Thanks for helping keep this thread alive. Your comment about the quality of the pictures here caused me to review them from the 1st page again. You're absolutely right- there are a LOT of great pictures here. I see from you www site that you are an accomplished photographer. I hope to see more of your work here. Russinator started this thread about a year ago. I haven't seen any of his posts here since January. Maybe he's away on another of his amazing adventures that he has shared pictures from.

Thanks K_and_I!  I'm only happy to help keep this wonderful thread alive.  I went through every page myself when I found the thread.  Great stuff here.  We can only hope Russinator comes back with more fantastic shots.

Hello PUP Group. BB is right I haven't posted in a very long time.

About a year ago our PC crashed and we lost everything [no backups] including the web address to this wonderful group. A few days ago I finally found it again.

Three months ago we sold our TV [a one ton Ford Van] and bought a Toyota Sienna Van. I'm torn between selling our PUP or fixing up the new van for PUP towing. Doing it right would cost about $1500 [break control system, wiring, trailer hitch, etc]. At least that's the price I was given.

Any ideas what I could get for a 2005 Fleetwood Niagara?

Austin: Yes, I do back ups now. I lost a lot of great pictures and other things, but I learned a valuable lesson. My old PC crashed and I replaced it with an iMac that has automatic backups [Apple calls it Time Machine].

Good news; the PUP sold. A great guy bought it for his family. They camp a lot and needed/wanted a larger PUP.

It's kinda funny, I started this thread and now I can't remember how to post pictures. If I did it right there's a montage of my grandson surfing.

Microsoft has a free resizer. It's called ImageResizerPowerToy. You can probably find a link by googling on it. Once downloaded (my version is 521k), just run the exe file and you've got it. To use it, you just highlight the files you want to resize (in Explorer) and right click. You'll see a new option has been added to the menu titled 'resize files'. Choose your options and run it. You'll have a new set of files but much smaller. By default it makes copies of the originals but you can choose to have it resize the originals also.

If you cant find it, email me and I'll send you the file.

Good luck.

I have a beautiful little 5 mile loop I run in wine country. After thinking about it forever, I finally grabbed my camera and threw it in my truck. After running the loop, I drove to a few spots and snapped some pics.

The grape vines are great to look at while running. In another week or so, there won't be a leaf left on them.

Unfortunately, the light wasn't great. It was sunset but very overcast. Would have been better had there been some more contrast. Oh well, maybe next time.

EDIT: These are HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. I took 5 photos of each scene, each at different exposures, then combined them into a single photo.

I went hiking in Mohican State Park a week or so ago. The trail I was on took me through the campgrounds. I was surprised to see a single Aliner camping there. There are mountain bike trails through the park, and there was a mountain bike leaning against the camper, so I think he (she?) was a hearty soul who likes camping and biking in the cold and snow.

This is what a pop-up should look like vs the snow covered picture just above. This was taken in Moose Hillock campground in western NH last fall:

Anyone else reminiscing about warm camping?

I've been dreaming about popping up. Lot's of rain here lately but we had a beuatiful day last Friday. 60 degrees, no wind, sun shining...Now I can't stop thinking about getting out.

K_and_I - Thanks for keeping up with the photos. I'm not doing my part. All of my photos have been of kids at basketball/baseball practices and games lately. I did go skiing over the new year weekend and only took my Canon S90 point & shoot. I'll post a couple pics since it is outdoors...no camping though.

The pics are taken at Mt Bachelor in Bend, OR. We stayed at a house in Sun River.

From the chairlift:

Another from the lift:

Some of the boys were happy to hop out of the hot tub and pose in the snow:

Finally, if anyone is interested, here's a link to the slideshow/video of the trip:

Thanks for taking a look.

Great pics, Wayne. I did look at the slideshow. It looks like a good time was had by all. No offense, but I'm getting tired of seeing the snow :).
Since we don't have good camping weather here yet, is anyone interested in seeing more of last year's better weather?

This was taken from the side of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The weather was too bad to go to the top, but we got up about half way:

Here's one of my favorites out of several the DW took as the sun went down at San Clemente State Beach on a recent SCCampers rally.

Displays fine for me. These are hosted on Photobucket, which many corporate IT departments block. Maybe you'll be able to view them when you're at home, not working, on your own time. :Z:compumad::Z

Heading to Big Bear this weekend. Plenty of snow up there, but we won't be camping.
If I see anything really remarkable I'll snap a few shots and post them.

I hope you get to go. Hwy 38 is supposed to re-open to downbound traffic at 6pm today. With another storm coming in tomorrow, it might not last long.

Never went to Tahquitz; our troop/council always used Ahwahnee when it was still open.

I'm so glad to see others posting pictures here. This one was taken last July in Holmes County, OH. We were "camping" at a bed and breakfast, and I took this out of the bedroom window. We had 15 couples and took up the whole place for that day. Somehow, I feel like I've cheated, though. Please don't tell my pop-up that we stayed at a bnb.

Ahhhhhh! A fellow admirer of one of the more enduring, so-called "dead" languages of antiquity.

PHOTO PHOUL!

Sorry K_and_I. I'm calling phoul. You are hereby sentenced to the great outdoors where you are required to take more photos and post them continually to this website. 6 months minimum. Try to get a camper in there every now and then....:U

Well, I'll try to oblige Wayne, but it would sure help if the weather cooperated. We had just melted off the last of the snow, when we woke up this morning to 14" on the ground. So, here is an outdoor shot and it does contain the camper (but I took it from inside the house through a window):

We went camping the week before Memorial Day so we could have some quiet time before the holiday weekend. Our children and grandchildren joined us Friday evening for the rest of the weekend. Here is a picture of our campsite:

This photo was taken at one of the kids activities at the campground. I have no idea who he is, or if his sister has any say in this matter:

Come to think of it, I have a sister.... naw, I wouldn't get much of a tractor for her :)
