Title: Kentucky Adventure
Post by: Mopnmom on Jan 08, 2008, 09:39 AM
Anyone have a suggestion for a campground in Kentucky? Hubby and I are thinking a State Park Resort as years ago we drove through a few and were impressed. We do like to do some hiking, sightseeing & swimming (not a priority).

I'd appreciate any information you can give me!

There are numerous great spots, of course.  But for hiking, sightseeing & swimming, I'd pick Natural Bridge State Park near Slade, Ky.  It will have that Eastern KY mountain-feel without being difficult to get to.  Great pool at the lodge that offers scenic surroundings.  You can either hike up or take a skylift to the Natural Bridge.  But for real hiking, the Red River Gorge Geological Area is just a couple of miles away - a gorge cut by a small but ancient river, leaving numerous rock houses and natural bridges.  I used to backpack there all the time.  If you're in a pop-up or small camper, I'd say the best spots are in the Middle Fork campground, specifically sites #35 or 34. You can make reservations here:

Thanks so much for your information. Sounds like a great place for a getaway...we're going to go for it this summer. We had kind of picked out the Natural Bridge State Park and now am going to make the reservations.

We just spent Thanksgiving at General Butler State Resort Park and were very impressed.  With their year-around open campground facilities, a lot of activities, and lots of nearby historic sites and close to Madison, Indiana downtown historic shopping district, we plan to return soon.

Carter Caves State  Resort Park is wonderful.  I grew up in the area, so I'm a little biased.  However, there's horse back riding, fishing, plenty of hiking trails, and of course, cave tours---5 of them I believe.  The spaces are good size.  Great place.

I think one of the best kept secrets in the blue grass is Blue Licks Battlefield State Park. It's been about 5 years since I've been there. Very Quiet but within 2 hours of horse farms, Natural Bridge and Carter Caves. (In different directions of course!) Pretty good hookups as well.
