This is a great opportunity to step up to the world of memory foam! You can buy it in various thickness, 1", 2" and I think 3" as "mattress toppers".
Check out the prices at Overstock.com, Target, Walmart, Costco, etc. There is a quality difference so becareful not to go on the cheap and wind up with some cheesy ones. The nicer ones come with a nice white fabric cover too. The cover's are available seperately however.
We put a 1 incher on our daughter's bunk, right on top of the camper's original mattress. Perfect for her size and weight. We put a 2 incher on our bunk. Neither topper is the correct size because the bunks in our '87 Starcraft are not true Queen or King, but it doesn't matter. It's not like we're using that outside few inches near the tent fabric anyway.
Thanks for the Info.!!!... :D I just checked out Target and Overstock.com. I'll have to get some clay, or steal some of my sons Play-doh, to help determine how much mattress I can fit. I'm grateful these websites have reviews and I see the cheaper ones have some mixed to bad reviews.
If you want to go with the traditional foam mattress, check with an upholstery shop and see what they would charge you to make mattresses out of high density foam. That way you would get the correct size. :)
You'll probably have room to put them right on top of the camper's original mattresses, that's what we've done. They fit fine.
tlhdoc has a good point about getting the original type foam from upholstery supply places. There are numerous different densities available, and you cut it with an electric carving knife. Very easy to work with.
If your original fabrics are musty smelling, you can remove them from the foam and hand wash them. Pretty durable stuff. You may find that doing this and letting the original foam mattresses air out at the same time will make a huge difference.

This remedy will be allot more comfortable on both my wallet and on my back than I thought. Now just a few more fixes, a practice run at Billy Dreher Island.....and its off to our first camping..oops..correction..... PUP experience in Charleston, SC !!!..... :W
I too added a memory foam topper to my bunks even though they were new - now they are more comfortable. Also added Sunbeam heated mattress pads to the bunks and they make cool weather camping quite comfie.
The 'cheapest' route you could probably go would be buying the 'allergy mattress covers' (available at Walmart), and you and spouse could wrestle the existing mattress into the cover, zip it and be good to go. I personally have to have a mattress pad, but you could add one and feel even more sanitary!

Other folks suggested air mattesses, and, I'd be semi-inclined to put an air mattress 'under' the existing mattress on the bunk (I've got dogs, so would be concerned with their nails puncturing the air mattress).
As to replacing the cushions, some fabric stores have foam, and you could cut it to fit, and after washing your cushion covers (gentle or handwash cycle) and line drying them (they could shrink/fall apart/whatever if put the the dryer). If you have parafin (sp) wax, you might want to wax the zippers for easier use (bar of soap works too, as does a candle).
