Title: Spring Rollcall
Post by: BuddyBear on Feb 18, 2008, 01:29 PM
All right all of you AZ Pop Uppers,
Spring is in the air down south and soon to be here in the Northlands as well...
I'm kinda in the middle.

Ive seen many new owners of Pop Ups in our great state over the past year or so posting, my self included, as well as the old timers with there wealth of expertise, so I thought maybe a roll call was in order..
Also, would anyone be interested in a spring or summer rally someplace on the rim under the pines? or any other location you might have would be great.
Mid week or weekend is OK with me.

Something like this:

Buddy Bear in Prescott Valley,
Rim Ralley sounds great but I need 3 to 4 weeks in advance to plan my work schedual.
Lets see what kind of response we get and go from there.
Thanks
BB

I'm in favor of a rally anytime. It would need to be a weekend for me. I work every third Saturday so it would have to be a weekend I'm off. I haven't camp many places so any place sounds good to me.

Gary Peterson in Gilbert. Let's camp!

We are open to weekends also. How about sometime in May?

I searched some of the Forestry sites and here is a link. Each person can make their own reservation some of the facilities have restrooms and showers. Just some info to get us going. We dry camp alot so we are prepared for any place. We have a bathroom onboard.

I know that AZ state parks are a first come first serve unless you book the group sites which are usually dry camping, it would be taking a risk. Just some thoughts.

http://www.recreation.gov/homeLeft.do?topTabIndex=CampingSpot

It wouldn't let me copy the whole link so I put in RVsite, AZ, Phoenix and used the date range from 5/1/08-5/12/08.

wavery's got salt in his blood, something tells me that the call of the sea will allways keep him near the water.

I still have moments when I can smell the salt and feel the swells swaying me and its been almost 10 years since I moved inland.

Gary,
The more the merrier, I allways say.
but you are kidding when you speak of people camping in something other than a PUP.. :D  If they only knew.

I also copied Spring Rollcall on 2 other PUP sites to see if any other Popuppers in our area might be interested..
I think we should let it run a week or two and see who is interested, in the mean time I am checking out CG when ever I get time, maybe we can compare note.

One couple has a toy hauler and a pup. The wife was always trying to talk us into getting a pup when we were thinking of getting a tt. They had one when the kids were small and they loved it. The one they have now they got a real good deal on and they bought it so their grown kids could use it to go camping with them when they took the toy hauler to go riding. They also make it available to others in the neighborhood.

Hopefully a couple of weeks will allow some more people to jump on board. With the weather getting nicer I'm sure people are anxious to get out and camp. Even if it was just the three of us it would still be a good time I'm sure.

Mary thanks for the link.
I was snooping around, reading posts from the early days of the AZ forum and then went back to the origins of PUT and it just dawned on me that you have been here since the beginning of PUT time. :D  WOW! That is very impressive.
I bet you have seen alot of AZ Pop Up owners come and go.
Has there ever been an organized group like you see in some of the other states? just wondering.

May is looking like a good month for a group get to gether, the CG on the rim should be open.(5/1) I'm thinking of heading down to Cottonwood in Mid March to get my camping fix while I'm waiting for the CGs in the Prescott area to open up.(4/1) A lot depends on how well our local AZ Sundogs do in the CHL playoffs.
Same level as the Phx. Road Runners, different league.
I may even camp in the parking lot of the arena here for the weekend series.(small town)
I'm still waiting for spring

Thanks for jumpin in Chilly. Will keep you posted on any thing being planned, any input you would like to throw in is more than welcome too..
I'd have to agree with you on the weather the last few days, Brrr. I was hoping we were done with Winter here.
The Thunder Snow the other night was very cool, :D
If you are ever heading out to a CG and would like some company, throw up a post. You never Know.

As for camping in the parking lot at TTC, I drive down Glassford Hill daily on my way to work and have seen several Moho's and a few truck campers in the lot over night for the weekend games early in the season before it got to cold.(last year also)
In Feb. my inlaws came up from Mesa for a Sat. game, our HOA will not allow them to park on our street so I called Tims and asked if it would be alright if they arrived in the afternoon before the game and stayed over night after the game and left Sunday. Their reply was that there were no hookup and that my inlaws needed to be fully self contained, asked that they not dump anything on the property and reminded me that it would be very cold overnight. Thanked me for calling and asking them for permission and said they would let the parking lot security know that they would be out it the lot overnight.
I thought that was really great of them..
By the way tonights game was fantastic.  6/5 Sundogs
See ya in the CGs

We're game.  I'd need notice so I can put in a time off request, but other than that I'm ready and willing.  Just let us know when and where.

This weekend, we're going to the grand canyon, already made reservations at trailer village.  We haven't attempted dry camping in the camper yet, but willing to try it at least once.

6fordaroad,

Let me know how Trailer Village is. We are going March 31st for three nights.

We've only dry camped for one night at a time but it's been great.

BuddyBear,

Yes, I have been around for quite sometime. I guess I would be called an oldtimer. We did have a group form in 2002 and had a couple of group camping trips but times changed, people upgraded their campers, moved or sold their campers. We had some great times. We have done alot of cross country traveling over the past few years so we have been busy throughout the summer. This year we will stick closer to home.

Gary, I sure will!  I don't know if you've read into the description or not, but it's supposed to only be 1/2 from the rim inside the state park, we are SO excited I doubt any of us will be getting much sleep tonight.  All but clothes have been packed away, I gotta do some laundry today, but other than that we are ready to go!  Hope everyone has a great weekend, I promise, I will get pictures up after this weekend of our site, the canyon and everything else.  OH poo, I have to get propane still.. haha.  Toodles!!

Post by: rebe918 on Mar 13, 2008, 05:16 PM
My wife and I have 5 kids and are new to pop up camping. Have been tent camping for awhile.  We are here looking for new areas to explore, and friends to meet up with. My brother in law also has a pop up and is fairly new within the last year to all this.

My wife and I work opposite 24 hours a day. We only get 10 days a month together. We would be interested in finding out more about the AZ clubs and/or campers.

Welcome to the wonderful world of pups! AZ is a very diverse state with a lot of places to see and explore. Plus we can camp all year long. I'm sure my four kids would love to spend time with your five.

Thanks AZsix.  New to threads also so not sure about the quote stuff yet.  I see you are in Gilbert. Where abouts do you camp, or should I say your preferred spot?

We live in Tempe, and we like tent camping at Woods Canyon lake. Nice atmosphere, and at 7700 elevation cool weather. We have not had our camper out yet. We have a lot of ideas, but no one to give good/bad experiences of places.

Our kids are 15, 14, 12, 4, 7 months. How old are yours?

To use quotes just click on the "quotes" button on the bottom right. You can delete any part of the quote that you don't want to use.

This is our first full year with our pup so I don't have all that much experience with it yet and haven't been to that many places. That being said we do like going to Lost Dutchman SP in AJ. No hookups but big spots and quiet. It does fill up this time of year though. McDowell Mtn Regional Park is another place we like. Elec/water hookups. Again they fill fast and as with most parks they are first come first serve. Look on the AZ State Parks site. The state parks here in AZ are great from what I have experienced. Lots have bathrooms with showers that are very clean. I highly recommend Kartchner Caverns SP. Great place to camp and the caverns are fantastic. Roper Lake SP looks nice too and someplace we are planning on going. Another forum member has had great things to say about it and is a repeat visitor. They take reservations there. Also there are BLM run cg's and you can camp on National Forest land. Going up to the high country is the only option for me in the summer around here. There are so many places that I want to go in this state and camp. I just hope I can get to them all.

My kids are 10, two 8's and 6.

We are leaving this afternoon to the desert by Florence Junction to join some of our neighbors that are out there for the weekend riding quads. We circle the campers up, do some riding, have a big fire at night and we have been known to drink a beer or two.  :!

Take the pup out somewhere close for a trial run. Contact me anytime via private message and if my schedule allows we'll join you. The kids (and me too) are willing to camp anytime.

AZsix thanks for all the helpful information. I will look at the web site.  If sites do or don't have hook ups is not that big of a deal, from a tent camper I guess, but open and quiet is my biggest concern.  Beer or two? I am really in. We hope to find a lot of new places with the pup, and lodging or rain will not be that much of a killer as it is in tents.

I have heard great things about Kartchner Caverns and really want to go. I will have to look into that and see where it really is and what is available.  Since new to this world I am a little confused on "BLM run cg's".  Sorry, my kids had to tell me what LMAO on text messaging meant.

I hope you had fun this weekend. The wife and I are going to take our two youngest and runaway this week. Still deciding on California in the XB and motel, or maybe Usery pass with trailer. Her brother is supposed to get his trailer this week. We bought his, he got the bigger Niagra.  We will be taking off WEDnesday thru FRIDAY. We can let you know what we decide, maybe we will check out AJ now also. We had some kids on spring break last week and some this week. Now we need a break.

I know she does want to plan a trip to the redwoods over the summer if you may be interested. Try for a week on the road.  We will definetly have to give you a personal message and feel free to contact us as well.

"BLM" is Bureau of Land Management and "cg" is campground.

If you are planning a trip to the Redwoods you will probably want to make reservations early as I'm sure it gets crowded up that way in the summer. Someone who lives near there could give you better info on that. Our "big" trip with the pup this summer is the Grand Canyon beginning on May 31st. With the price of gas we can't afford many long trips. We will do a lot of weekend trips up in the mountains.

If you open and quiet is important to you (as it is to most of us) you will want to stay away from commercial cg's. For the most part they have small spots, they are close together and more expensive.

I agree it would be fun to meet in the middle some day.

AZsix we have been looking pretty heavily at Dead Horse Reanch and Roper lake.  We Really like Lost dutchman, but there is a moonlight walk on the 19th and it may get crowded.

We will for sure be out of here by Wednesday, but may play hooky and leave tomorrow. We will let you know where and when we are going to take off, if you would like to join us.  You are in Gilbert, are your kids on spring break?

Looking forward to meeting you.  We will have our 4 year old (going on 15) and our 7 month old with us. We will have a beer waiting...

Give us a pm if interested, if you go to look for us we drive a 2006 Nissan Titan that is bright red, graphics on the side, and has a 6" lift, if that does not set us apart we have a big brush guard onthe front.

My kids are off this week but I still have to work. This weekend I have too much to do around the house. The season is still young so I'm sure we'll be able to meet up some time soon.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Ropers lake was nice.  We got up there on Tuesday and got the last hook up spot for the day. The days were a little cooler than the valley, and the nights were pretty cold.  Not much greenery this time of year. Had a nice hike up a small Mesa. The natural hot springs is a hole in the ground about the size of a large hot tub and stayed about 95-96 degrees. That was the best part according to our 4 year old. It was nice to get away

The spots, too me, were pretty close together. Nice people for the most part although we had one family that tried to shove a motorhome, a tahoe with a trailer full of quads and 4 vehicles into 1 spot.

We will be trying other areas before returning. Has anyone been to Dead Horse Ranch in Cottonwood?

Catch up with you on one of these trips.

We did learn a bit for our first pop up experience. It did beat sleeping on the ground in a tent.

Give me dates in July and we will take a look and see if we can make it. We seem to hit off weekends, but we will hook up one time.

We are not able to make Big lake on 5/30. Sounds like fun.
