Title: 2008 Easter camping trip
Post by: tlhdoc on Feb 18, 2008, 01:50 PM
We have gone to Assateague Island National Seashore for the last 15 years for Easter. This year our school district has had to cancel school too many times for bad weather and all our kids get off is good Friday. I don't think we will be going to Assateague with only a 3 day weekend. Is anyone interested in camping for Easter?:)

OK, the Easter trip is going to be at French Creek State Park in PA. We are in the only open loop, which is B. Pets are allowed in this loop while the normal pet loop is closed.

We have discussed going down to Trap Pond for Saturday-Tuesday, Easter weekend.  But Margies mom is in the hospital again so we are hedging our bets.  We will have to decide as we get closer....

Sorry you are going to miss Assateague.

Sorry to hear about your DMIL.  Give her my best.  Instead of going south have you considered going north?  I know camperjohn is interested in camping for easter and maybe a few others.:)

Well, with it being right near nicole's b-day she would obviously love to go somewhere.  Let me know what your thoughts are as we may join ya.

I will have to find out about Shady Maple with it being a holiday weekend. Her birthday is the the 25th. We are open to other areas however if you wanted something different.

PS. I can't make it a long weekend as work has a new computer system going in around that time and there are no vacations allowed.

Scott we have good Friday off, so you are the one with the more limited schedule.  I think camperjohn is interested in camping for Easter too.  Want to make any suggestions?  I want electric, any other hookups are fine.:)

I have to see, it still a few weeks off.  Oak Creek has some creek side sides in the lower level, took Raymond there last year, he left early, I had to drive home with the trailer in the Noreaster that hit.
There is another campground just down the street from Oak Creek, and then there is Lake-in-Wood, if they are open that early.  Oh Yes, Spring Gulch and Brandywine Meadows...AND French Creek is not too too far.

I have a problem with Traps Pond as it is loaded with Pine, the kind that makes me very very sick even with Flonaise (it makes it worse since it is an irritatant and not an actual allergy, opening me up for more of the irritants...I hate this getting old stuff).

Spring Gulch does not have any shower houses open during the winter, so I will not camp there.:(  I don't know anything about Oak Creek, Lake-In-Wood, or
Brandywine.  I do like French Creek SP.  They have electric and pet sites.  Scott do any of these places sound good to you?  Camperjohn what about you?

Lets see, spring gulch is out as is Lake in Wood ( just called and they don't have anything available ).  Since I am partial to state parks my vote would be for french creek sp.

Just got Kelsey's spring soccer schedule and it looks like games every Sat/Sun in April and May and 1/2 of June. This is a new league so it works a bit differently than last yr when they just had games one day on the weekend. This league plays state cup so maybe they'll get wiped out fast  :D .

I also found out she's trying to do AAU bball this spring/summer (in her spare time) so who knows if we'll ever get away...

The good news is that HS bball season ended tonight  :-().

Ok I made my reservation starting March 20th (Thur night after work) for 3 nights.  This is not the pet loop, it isn't open, but there is electric.  I reserved site B34.  I have no idea what this loop is like.  It was closed the other times I was at the park.  So who is next?  Di it looks like this trip would work for you since it is in March.:)

I am going to try calling tomorrow to see if they will allow pets even though it isn't the pet loop.  After last years fiasco, not sure if we are willing to leave the remaining dog home.

My reservations are Thurs to Sunday, I may not get there until Friday AM early, will depend on work.

I do not drive at night unless I have to, and I do not back after dark.

I'll be coming in the back way (past the Morganstown Walmart. and back roads) only because I have to go too far out of my way to go in the front entrance.

Hi guys! It just so happens that I'll be @ French Creek the wknd before Easter & since I have never stayed in this loop before, I went up & looked around in Nov. Here's a photo of sites 32 & 34.

I had made a note that these sites were pretty nice & work well together, as there is a little connecting pathway btwn the two.

Yes, I have a personal preference for having the socializing area on the side of the camper. Although most of the sites at FC are a good size, many of them have the gathering area behind the parking pad. Site 30 does have it on the side toward the back surrounded by shrubbery.
That being said, I didn't book that site for Mar eventhough it was available, because this will only be our 3rd trip w/ the hybrid & I'm still not completely comfortable with our mirror set up. So, I took 48, a large unobstructed one on the end!

We are thinking of leaving sometime early on Friday morning to head up.  Hopefully they will let us check in a little early.

As for Shady Maple, of course.  I did call and they will be open.  I would guess we don't want to wait to long to get there as it is a holiday weekend.  Why not let some of the people who are driving in for that decide what time works best for them.  Especially since I will be camping and therefore have no such schedule.:p

They have a lot of seafood ( up nicoles alley ) but they also have a lot of non-seafood stuff also.  Last time I went for dinner they had black angus dinner there also plus a carving station with turkey ( yumm ).

I have only been there one time and that was for breakfast.  Jon loves seafood, I don't, but I am sure there are things I would like (like Scott said):)For Good Friday they are having their "Saturday" breakfast buffet.  Maybe we will go Friday for breakfast and then with the group for dinner???

Tracy, I will go with you for Breakfast on Friday (if I do not leave until Friday AM, if I cannot get off early on Thursday, I can meet you there. but I think I will skip the dinner. There is not enough I like there on Friday and Saturday nights to justify the price (as of late even the smell of fish and seafood makes me ill), infact, if we go at all during the week, we hit the prime rib night and that might be once every 2 years.

We do not do the Smorgie when we go up there on weekends, Raymond and I opt for the cafeteria in the Grocery, as neither of us eat enough to normally justify the cost of the smorggie for us.  The only time we do is when we have company and this is one of the highlights.

Looks like I am not going to get there until Friday morning, I have been out most of the week with a respiratory infection, and they will take a dim view of me asking for a part day off next Thursday with us under a testing deadline when I missed 27 1/2 hours this week.

Tracy, if you are still doing breakfast at the Shady Maple on Friday, let me know and I can meet you there, there is plenty of trailer parking there. If not, I'll get something around the superwalmart at PA 10 and US 30 in Parksburg.

I was hoping to drive down to visit with you but not sure if I can make it work because it's a holiday weekend. J is coming home from school that weekend and I'm not sure when/where I will need to pick him up and I think I'm expected to be here for Easter. Haven't heard yet if Court is coming home, but she surprised us last year by showing up on Friday night - had to be back Sunday.

Did you decide yet when you're doing Shady Maple? I've NEVER been there. Sure wish it were closer (2 1/2 hrs) because I LOVE buffets. So many choices. I'm envious of you guys.

Post by: tlhdoc on Mar 16, 2008, 08:36 AM
Paula which trailer will you be bringing?

Is there anything else anyone wants to do?  Cabales?  Coleman outlet?  Any other suggestions?

I am going out and installing my new Sun Shade in a few minutes.  Then it will be time to pop up and do some cleaning and trip prep.  I am not going to dewinterize the trailer for this trip.  I don't want to have to re-winterize it again this close to spring.:)
Title:
Post by: SheBantam on Mar 17, 2008, 05:52 AM
I'm bringing the little one.  It is easier to set up if I can get out of here at a reasonable hour.  Raymond has even offered to meet me here at work (if he decides to come) when I get off so we can leave on Thursday afternoon from here. It is less than 2 hours barring traffic around Wilmington to Hockessin.

Winterize???? I have run a heater all winter in the little trailer, got the stuff to winterize (the hardware) but did not install it. Will try to remember to bring it with me and install it at the campground since I will have experts. Also Tracy can see the sink, well the faucet totally installed without removing the counter top.

My fear of moving (my back) is now gone.  The WC ended and the back got worse...for about 2 weeks, then miraculously started getting better WITHOUT excersize...the chiro was evidently aggrevating the injury and not allowing it to heal...
Once better, I found a DVD for back care Yoga for beginners...(NOT_Maybe beginning instructors...gave that one away) then found a free WMA download from New Zealand (home of Lord of the Rings), with two guys that are not bad to watch...and they give "easy" (some are some are down right hard) basic yoga moves that even I can do.  My Primary Care Doctor is thrilled...both that I am moving and that I am doing the yoga, well sort of...I try...but it is really releasing the back muscles and I have not slept better in years.

This is going to be a GOOD weekend, with or without Raymond.

I was contemplating of coming down there do join you guy's for brunch/buffet, by I don't have it in me to drive 5 hours round trip.
I made reservations  at the New Orleans Steak House instead for a Sunday brunch.Tracy and Diane know the place ,right?
I guess will just have to wait until Tracy's birthday to get together again.
Hope you all have a good time and Happy Easter.

Enjoy yourselves! We had a great time at French Creek this past wknd. Just a little info I'll pass along. Don't worry about the firewood advisory. As long as you burn everything you bring in, you're fine. The concession stand is still closed, so buy it before you enter the park. The faucets on the outside dishwashing sinks are not hooked up yet, so they are allowing you to wash dishes in the bathhouse. The campground checkin booth wasn't manned yet, either. But, the rangers patrolled more than they ever have in any of my previous trips there. And if you plan to indulge in an adult beverage, keep it concealed. I had a visit from the rangers at my site because as they were driving by, they saw a brown bottle on my picnic table. Imagine their surprise when they picked it up, turned the label around & saw that it was an empty Hank's Black Cherry soda bottle!

I still have to do EVERYTHING, since I had the respiratory infection last week, I am just feeling up to loading up now.  Will try to get some of the drawers in the truck tonight (some are in the minivan, some are in the shed, some are in the Bantam...and my water 5 gallon jug and carrier.
I am going to pull a Turkey and dumplings out of the freezer and we will have that on Thursday night. Then worry about the store on Saturday.
Also need clothes, took them out of the camper back in the fall...If I forget anything...Walmart is NOT too far...and it is a SuperCenter, just French Creek side of Morganstown.

I am up for suggestions on how to remove my nightstand and add a full sized bed.  Those benches are as wide as a sleeping bag, but that is not really wide at all.

We might have a mod going this weekend if I can get some viable ideas.
And with Lowes or Home Depot by the SuperWalmart, I can get everything but the mattress there and could run to Reading for a cheap light Full sized mattress (I have to be able to lift it to get to the waterheater (or make a hole in the paneling to flip the winterizing switch/lever).

I was thinking about velcroing a couple of under the bed drawers to the floor, for storage under there.

I also need an option for my spare tire, it under the bench INSIDE the trailer. Clearance on this trailer is VERY VERY low and the door is on the backside, so no bumper spare tire holders.

I have some, May load my battery operated set (18 volt???), but hey, you probably have things I would not think of...though I may be the only woman in the group (with a husband that is) to have my very own electric miter saw...no that stays home, NOTHING is that sensitive it need that kind of trim work.

And I can have some REAL FUN renovating, Raymond said it will be too cold for him and he is staying home...

So Scott you are volunteering to help?? Or are you volunteering Nicole??? I'll accept all the help my little trailer will allow. Remeber it is as wide as a popup and only an 11' box.

Actually at 2:00 AMish this morning (the phone rang, woke us up and I could not get back to sleep) I realized I have most everything but two little pieces of wood and a mattress...So this may be easier than I thought...yes famous last words...

This CabinA is set up to use the table as a bed, with an insert so it is full sized, because that took up too much room, we abandoned that idea, and that I need extra cushioning for my back...the table/bed and nightstand just was not practical for 2 people.

Well I still have the table and the insert. All I need to do is to remove the night stand, put in two pieces of wood to support the insert, by the wall at the same level as the existing pieces in front of the nightstand. Like what you have on your popups when you make the table into a bed.

I need to cut a hole in the paneling below the bench to be able to turn the lever to the WH by-pass. I need to move the electric plug on the night stand to the bench, it will have to be near the converter to make it actually usable/reachable.  Electricity is not my strong point. I know enough to turn off the power. I think I can disconnect it and remount it to the bench.

I may need tips on cutting the cushions (boy am I glad that Raymond is not coming) and using velcro to finish them. It may be easier with the zippers to just take the cushions out, cut them down and get new fabric at the Walmart in Morgantown, and use the self sticking velcro and liquid stuff that can be used for seams.  No I do not sew.  Have a brand new sewing machine still in the box and get free lessons, just have not gone to take them...I guess I need to.

The only woman in the group with an electric miter saw?
Paula, You have never seen my workshop.  Among my toys, I have a sliding compound miter saw with a laser sight.

Hope someone gets this message...we had to cancel this trip because Terri's father died a few days ago and we're flying to Houston for the funeral which is Tuesday. I was able to get most of my money back anyway.

Well, made it back safe and sound. I think I am still full from eating so much this weekend. It was great seeing friends again. Can't wait for the next trip. Next month just seems so far away. I must say however that this was a very nice campground and would want to go back again in the future. Didn't even use a full tank of gas up/back/driving around. Hickory run is 2 tanks and I will not say how many N/S lake is from here.

Hey Paula, is this the time I can start the rumors going about how you burned part of your camper this weekend? :D

I made it home.  Forgot about you Nancy, yes you probably have much much more than I do when it comes to mechanical toys...

Yes Scott a 1/4 tank each way for me, that is WONDERFUL!!.  But then I am pulling a much tinier trailer...

Got the mod done and it is WONDERFUL!! also.  I think I suprised Scott, because bu the time he and his family got there, I had figured out what to do and had mmost of it done...The electric was shut off in the trailer, I had dis mantled the plug and had bare wires. I had run an extension out to the main box and had power for the tools and my lap-top so I could also have music.

You do not just pull a nightstand out of an a-liner, it is screwed, and glued and wires and waterlines were in there too, I ended up using my new saber saw and putting it out, finishing off with a hand saw and jerking the bad-boy out, leaving the bottom almost intact (got carried away with the sutting and cut the main support to the bench...

Scott to the rescue...Nicole is sooo lucky, he is quite handy with the stuff that scared me...he wired the electric plug, And hooked it to the mount. I had one of those that the only thing you need to do is drill a hole or two for the wires, and it mounts to the wall, like a picture..., He cleaned up the whack job I did on the paneling and showed me where I needed to cut some more of the frame to the nghtstand so my table would fit. he also fixed the support that I got carried away with and cut in 2...no, not with super glue, but with a piece of angle iron that he strightened.  Then last but not least, he cut a hole so I could make a cut in the paneling so I could crawl under twice a year and flip the WH bypass...

Then he came back and invited me to Shady Maple for dinner, but I wanted to get done and really was NOT hungry.

I put in the bed supports, and then laid the insert and table...Everything fit together soooooo nice, then I rolled the full sized mattress to the door (I still had it in the plastic) and got it into the trailer, but getting it ACROSS the trailer took everything I had, then I cleared off the counter by the sink, and the other stand, andpulled it up there, then turned and twisted it and it all of a sudden fell into place...I almost fell on top of it I was soooo tired,

The cushions went into the truck to go into the shed. The new set of sheets came out of the truck, I unfolded my memory foams, and put them on, the heated mattress pad, and then the sheets. Topped with one fully opened extra large Cabellas sleeping bag. and I had a REAL bed.

Turned on the mattress warmer to 5 and that was where it stayed all night to soothe my worn body, because if it was a part that could move...it hurt (not to mention the wind Thursday night sort of jerked the door and I had my tool box in my hand and I slid out the door onto the ground...It was no small drop either...)  I still ache a little, Raymond this afternnon pushed in the mattress a minute and pronounced it OK.

John and Terri I am sorry for your loss.

I had a nice time on the trip.  Just wish it was longer.  I was surprised how quickly an aliner will burn...:D

Ummm the cabinet top to the ALINER, the actual trailer and everything that was inside BUT the top half of the night stand is doing quite well thank you!!!

Paneling always burns quickly, unless it has somesort of flame retardant. and that was all that piece of firewood was.  paneling with a little soft pine around the edges.

it is kind of scarey though...

Sounds like you all had a big time modding Paula's trailer and attempting to burn it to the ground.

All I got to do was play with the grandson and ride my bike around Trap Pond...

By the way, March has not been a good month for a bunch of COTOCians, based on the posts here...DW's mom passed away on the 1st of the month.

So we REALLY needed a camping trip.

Our prayers and thoughts are with all of those who recently lost loved ones.
