Title: Any interest in a Thanksgiving rally?
Post by: griffsmom on Jul 17, 2008, 05:42 PM
UPDATE: 10/20/08

..............................CANCELLED...................................

Okay it's almost time for money to be do so everyone needs to send a check to griffsmom or if you are going to Riley farms give it to her then. You can PM GRIFFSDAD for the address.

here's the scoop. As of right now we have EXACTLY 10 people going so we get the group rate. we also have an extra site. (Thurs-Sun) there are 3 available sites open so come on people come camping. you can come in on friday but you do have to pay for Thurs

NO TENTS allowed unless there is an RV in the site. Gracy you could have your friends put their tent on your site and their site you can set up your cooking area etc and park your vehicles there. There is always a loophole somewhere ;)

 Total Due: $118.98
here is the cost breakdown

3 nights @ $36.30  = $108.09
3 nights extra site /10 sites = $10.89 ***this amount could change based attendance

Again we HAVE to have 10 sites for the group rate. we need to know ASAP if you can't make it. some may change their plans if the cost is too high.

I will post this on the first page along with your site assignments. If you are coming in on WED. YOU must call newport dunes and reserve your site.

RALLY IS THURS-SUN Nov 27-30
Edited 10/02/08:

Those committed (or who should be committed )

1. Griffsclan WED-SUN site #2201
2. Dee4j WED-SUN site #2204
3. Azusateach WED-SUN site #2210
4. dkutz THUR-SUN site #2205
5. jendak760 WED-SUN site #2212
6. 58Air WED-SUN site #2203
7. Gracy Fri-Sun  site #2207
8. Sue Hardee  WED-SUN  site #2206
9. Jendak's Bro site #2214
10. Crowbar4 site #2208
11. available site #2209
12. available site #2211
13. available site #2216
14. group site site #2202

http://www.newportdunes.com/RV_Park_Pages/RV_Spaces_Map.html

Whatever I tell Nick the rally days are, we must maintain 10 sites. If we end up with 9 commitments, I will keep the 10th for the group rate and split that site's fees among the 9 of us. This will be much cheaper than everyone paying $71/night.

How many would be interested in camping for Thanksgiving?
Looks like we've got enough interest--please read below for details on this rally. Dee4j and I will be co-wagonmastering this one.

Quote from: Dee4jGot a hold of nick the first try

ok here's the deal:

I have a tentative hold on ten sites WED-SUN at Newport Dunes on the Back Bay in Newport Beach. I need to find out ASAP when everyone is planning on arriving:

I was going to do Fri- Sun knowing that can individually reserve up to 2 days before on our own for the group rate but....Nick said that was fine but a VERY busy time and the site maybe taken and we would have to move. He blocked out 5 & 5 across from each other in the 2200 section.

The rate is total (with tax, etc.) $36.30/night for 10 sites but about $71/night if we have less than 10 sites. One month prior the last chance for cancellations and money needs to be in. A deposit is due at the time of the contract.

so everyone let me know:

"Yes, I'm going" and WHAT DAYS YOU PLAN ON ARRIVING

Quote from: Dee4jwe have to maintain 10 sites to get the rate so...

What I actually meant was ARRIVAL day...The Rally is until Sunday ....What I was asking was what day everyone was arriving not leaving...for example, if 5 of 10 can't come until Friday then the Rally will be Fri-Sun...the others will have to make their OWN reservations for WED and/or THURS immediately or risk them not being available until Friday

Lori, where are you thinking?  San Mateo has a very few w/e sites available, but only before Thanksgiving, and it looks like Mission Bay's got stuff, too.  Or are you thinking more local, like Newport?

Yes, this would involve arriving on Wednesday (evening for me so it needs to be somewhat close to home) and leaving on Sunday.

Maybe Canyon RV, so we could have hook ups? any other ideas?

I would really like to do this, and Dave has only requested that there be cable so he can watch the football games--a very reasonable request, so I'm thinking either Newport Dunes or Flying Flags. I have not checked availability yet for either cg, but am leaning towards FF, just because the sites are a bit bigger and they appear to be a little less expensive ($76 vs. $89). I don't know if they'll give us a group rate if we have enough families. In any event, we should probably move on this soon before sites sell out.

What are your thoughts on these two possible CGs?

GEEEEEEZ!!!!! Just do it, will ya... :D

You tell us where to go (carefully) and we'll be there. We don't care where it is, as long as we have good friends there. If anyone else has needs that need to be met, DO IT!!!!! and let's reserve a place.

I'll bring the turkey......just tell me where.... :-()

I don't think we will want to make a trip to flying flags for just two nights. OF course if we have to drive to Arroyo grande for thanksgiving with dawnnes uncle then it would probably work out.   Newport would be ok, if we got a group rate.  That place is not cheap.

FOOTBALL GAMES?????? :yikes:  :yikes:

David...David...David....What happened to poker

Just kidding....have Brian (or somebody) bring his satellite dish.

Dieter,

We got a good lesson in economics last weekend. We spent $600 for gas in 2 days. I'm starting to look at more expensive CG as apposed to driving long distances. Although, $100 a night for a camping spot just sorta makes my skin crawl......it's just the principal of the whole thing that bothers me but I'll get over it for T/G weekend. I just want to see us get something going before my brother calls and says, "Hey...how about Lake Skinner for Thanksgiving?"  :morning:

Lori, I'd be willing to call Newport Dunes to check on group rates.  Given traffic issues I'd rather keep it more local if possible.  I like both places, but would lean toward Newport, just in terms of proximity.  The extra $13/night would be more than made up for in gas at this point.  Let me know.

Just called Newport Dunes.  Their group rate (10 sites) would be $37/night for that week.  Can't beat those prices!  But Nick, the group reservation guy, said that he has room for only 1 more group.  We need to make a decision ASAP.

Thanks Laura!!

Okay, we've got interest from:
1 58Air
2 dkutz (Friday arrival?)
3 wavery (?)
4 surfcampers
5 azusateach
6 griffsclan
7 dee4j (?)
8 jendak (?)
9 boothebunch (?)

Is any of the above able or willing to definitely commit? Laura, what is the cancellation policy if we reserved the sites now just to be safe but needed to cancel them if we couldn't get enough families for the group rate?

Is anyone else interested given the location? We need at least a couple more families and $37/night is a pretty good rate. Plus, judging by the Easter rallies, I'm sure the cg will offer lots of activities for the kids geared toward the Thanksgiving holiday.

Can't commit because we don't know whats going on with family get togethers this year.  If its here then Dunes is awesome, and super close we could set up thurs morn and eat at home and sleep in camp.  If we go up to uncles then FF would work good.  So it all depends.

Okay, this is what I found out from Newport Dunes:

First, Nick is just about impossible to get in touch with.  Didn't speak with him but some other nice guy at the regular reservation desk.  He said that for less than 10 sites it would be between $62-68/night, depending on which row we're in.  He also said we'd need to book no later than mid-September, as Thanksgiving week always fills up.  If we reserve 10 sites at the group rate and can't fill all 10 we'd be charged the regular rate.  His advice was to just pay for the 10 at the group rate -- we'd still come out ahead.

As I didn't get to talk with Nick I didn't commit us to anything.  I'm NOT going to wagonmaster this.  So, if someone else wants to call tomorrow -- he's only there until 3:00 -- and do the wagonmaster thing, have at it.  I think it would be great fun to do something different for Thanksgiving & Newport has got lots of positive things going for it.

Job done!

Laura

What is the temperature at Newport Dunes at that time?  I only ask because a lot of the activities are water based and would that rule them out?

Usually the temperature range would be in the high 50's to low 60's during the day and in the 40's at night. They do have a heated pool.

I am sorry.  I forgot about this thread and didn't look for it....kind of buried.  I have been busy moving my classroom all week...in a zone.

Anyway, Nick is hard to get ahold of...but he is super nice and easygoing with things.  Yes, you must have 10 sites to get the group rate.  I would suggest getting one extra site for Sccampers, dividing the cost among everybody, for the potlucks and campfire (since sites are small).

I have always gotten more than I needed....and cancelled about a month before any I didn't need, and it has never been an issue (they seem to have no problem filling sites up).  So, if it is like in the past, you could grab 15 or so...and see how many takers you get.  It is a one-hundred dollar deposit at first, then you send the first night's money one month before, and then the wagonmaster pays for the second night when you get there.  Usually you can get the group rate for two days before and two days after the official rally weekend---but with it being Thanksgiving Weekend, it could be different.  You would really need to ask Nick.  I always left him messages on voicemail, and he took care of things or called back.

We are interested in going....another family friend of our's is interested, too.  They need to check with family.  Us?  We have to go to my mom's for Thanksgiving Day, no doubt about it....so, Bran wants to think about it (he is cranky because he would rather have turkey at the campground, but my grandma will be heartbroken if we don't show up).  Put us down for two tentative sites....and I will let you know by the end of the weekend.

Take care!
Lisa

need to go back to bed.not doing well today..Lori maybe we can Co-wagonmaster this together?

so everyone let me know:

we have to maintain 10 sites to get the rate so...

What I actually  meant was ARRIVAL day...The Rally is until Sunday  ....What I was asking was what day everyone was arriving not leaving..
if 5 of 10 can't come until Friday then the Rally will Fri-Sun...the others will have to make their OWN reservations for WED and/or THURS immediately or risk them not being available until Friday

I will do one turkey for Thursday. We will need more than one turkey. Since mine will be cooked in a DO or mabye I will fry one; the largest bird I can do is 12lbs.

Griffclan tradition; Lori is French; after Thanksgiving we make Turkey Gumbo!!!! Tres' Bien!!!!

3.Azusateach WED-SUN
4.dkutz THUR-SUN
5.
6.
7.

9.
10.

(Lori feel free to edit as necessary)
Whatever I tell Nick the rally days are we must maintain 10 sites.
if we end up with 9 commitments I will keep the 10th for the group rate and and split that sites fee's amoung the 9 of us. this will be much cheaper than everyone paying $71/night

Dieter, after watching football from 10 am to 6 pm, eating lots of turkey, and drinking beers, I don't think we will have poker games on Thursday night, unless I consume massive amounts of cactus coolers.

Well then I will save my $$ for fri, or sat.  Don't you play poker while watching the game, don't they go hand in hand?  Or better yet you should have a football pool!

We could have a football pool. But we need the players to buy the squares. We could pick one game. There are 100 squares; 0-9 for top team on sheet and 0-9 for team on side of sheet. Payouts would be when a team scores and scores at the end of the first, second, third, and fourth quarters.

With all the games you should have everyone pick winners for each game, and then who ever has the best record at the end of the day, gets Dee's flame thrower.

This is now a formal rally. Check the first post often for details and updates.

Newport Dunes requires that all sites be booked for the same block of dates, i.e., one of us can't come in on Thursday if the rest are coming in on Wednesday or leave on Saturday if the rest are staying until Sunday. Therefore, we may make this a THURS-SAT rally, and everyone will have to make their own Wednesday and Saturday night reservations.  You can still get the group rate for two days before and two days after the formal rally dates. Stay tuned....

[Hmmmm....I'm beginning to think that maybe we should make everyone wagonmaster a rally just once so they can see what it's like to deal with all of the details that go into a rally....] ;) :p :sombraro:

I don't think popularity has anything to do with it--I've never been one of the "beautiful, popular people." In fact, I was a total geek in high school, anti-social in college, and lucky to make it out of law school alive.

I'm pretty sure people can't resist seeing what I'm going to do next to embarass myself and that's why they come to my rallies.  ;)

Lori, since I'm obviously too dense to understand this, are you saying that if I leave on Saturday I'll still be liable for the Sunday night costs?  I understand that I'll have to call the CG for the Wed. night reservation.  Did that at Easter with no issues & got the group rate.

When I posted that I'd be in for Wed.-Sat. that was BEFORE any definite dates were mentioned.  All that was said was that you MAY make the rally from Thurs-Sun.  And I thought that by providing the departure date it would give you & Dee an idea of what my intentions were.

So, if this is too complicated I'll be happy to bow out.  I don't want to be a trouble-maker.

I'm not trying to make it complicated, so my apologies if I am; I'm just relaying what the cg is telling us. I also don't want you to bow out, but if you chose to leave Saturday a.m., you would still be responsible for site fees for Saturday evening. Given that this cg is so local, you could leave at your usual early Sunday morning time and still be home before 9:00 a.m. ;) :)
Title:
Post by: Dee4j on Aug 04, 2008, 02:28 PM
Laura.. ..first of all we don't want you to bow out..

Here's the deal:
1. WE have to maintain 10 sites for the group rate for the ENTIRE time of the rally. Nick didn't mention the 3 night min, but it's on their website. I have a VM to him.. I'm 99% positive they will not break up the weekend, especially being a holiday..most hotels don't and Vegas you can't get a hotel for one night on ANY weekend w/o paying for 2
regardles again 10 sites  the said rally nites...

2. by accomodating your Saturday departure THE ENTIRE GROUP of 9 people have to call and make seperate reservations and risk having to move OR not having a site at all. hense the reason for the arrival days to minimize this from happening

3. by you leaving early ALL 9 familys have to pay for YOUR site to maintain the Required 10...It's one thing to all agree if we have 9 pay for 10 and split it but everyone will be using it for eating/campfire

normally it wouldn't be a big deal but when the  rate is dependant on a certain number of people to maintain that rate, I only think it's fair the rally dates are set that the commitment be made..unfortunetly when someone chooses camp with the group they have to suck it up go with what benefits the group as a whole.

We are in for Wed through Sun!

Lori, I find it hard to believe that you were not one of the beautiful people in high school or college!  As it goes, you have always been wonderful, gracious and a joy to camp with!  Furthermore, Ronin thinks you are one cool camper!

For Thanksgiving we can also cook a Turkey up to 18 pounds should be okay.  Let me know if you would rather have us make something else or in addition to the turkey.

Also, let me know who and when to send the money.

Do we dress up for the thanksgiving dinner?

Harald and I are cooking turkeys. Is anyone else going to do a turkey? I may deep fry one. I don't know yet. Very fast - 3 minutes for each pound, and yummy. But very very dangerous, if you don't know how to do it, and a messy clean up. I just may do the turkey in my DO. Haven't decided and there's plenty of time to decide. Heck I may even smoke a turkey - in a smoker of course. Good Eats!!! And can't wait for turkey gumbo on Friday.

Is everyone looking at the 2008 Calander. The thread is Thanksgiving by the Bay, Nov. 26-30,2008. Which means arrive Wed. night and depart on the 30th. SUNDAY. Maybe I'm wrong but normally any CG's minimum stay is counting night's NOT days. If check in is say after 1:00 or 2:00 than that really does'nt allow anyone to enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast with friends if they cant check in until after that time on Thursday, unless you bring everything premade for Thanksgiving day or did you want the potluck to be on Friday. Unless this is setup so everyone can have there normal family function on Turkey day then enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend with friends. Because as I said Toni and I would be there WEDNESDAY thru SATURDAY which means a SUNDAY departure.:)

To many contadictions on this post as far as the days/dates.

ok first of all you ALWAYS go what's on page one..THAT is always the latest and greatest..that weeds thru all the confusion in between

because of the holiday we must stay 3 Nights. when you make a reservation you give them the arrival day..in this case the 27th and the departure date which is Sun the 30th..the reason for it being THUR-Sun is what ever days the rally is we must maintain 10 sites for the rate..some hd expressed intrest in coming in on thur or FRI that way if they came in on THur. when i get the exact site numbers I will give it to you and YOU will make your wed reservation....

We are looking for a spot that is family friendly since we have small children.  Also a place that isn't to cold and windy in late November.

Thanks :)

All depends on the Rally and the CG...

For this rally, thanksgiving, a block of ten sites was reserved ahead of time.  You simple need to post that you want to attend, or PM the "wagonmaster" for the rally to put you as going.  Then when the time comes for money you will send it to the "wagonmaster" to pay for your spot.

Some of the rallies (self service), are different, people will post that they got a site at campground Cactus cooler, site #D1, and if you want to go you call the campground and reserve a site close to the other sites.

IF you want to go to the thanksgiving rally, last post said there was one spot left..  email quick!! ha ha

I should know this weekend whether we'll be coming.  Kristi is in favor, my mom has suggested the Death Valley area (Shoshone) .  My brother is all for renting houseboats on the delta.

DH and I decided to take a road trip to Newport Dunes this morning......... when I asked him about it he said he remembered it and he said it was really nice........................... boy was he right!  It was super awesome!!! :D

The whole site is really well maintained and very resort looking.... so its not just a website or brochure making it look better then it is.  It's all true!

The spots all have fencing between them so thats pretty cool if you have little ones like we do ;)  It was Class A madness though... so I don't know if its always like that or just cause its labor day weekend???

There was a section... I think prolly where we will be inthe 2,000's that was more "middle class"..... I think we (our family) fits in better there with those dudes! hahahaha!

The only downfall is the spots are super stacked on top of each other.  I'm totally fine with it just means you have to love your neighbors!! hahaha!

Anyway I'm super excited about this place and just had to share what I saw :)

Are there going to be site # assignments prior to arriving or do you just take an open spot in the reserved sections by who comes first?

I've seen for some of the other trips where people pick their spots when they sign up.

Just wondering because I'd like to try and map out what spot we would be in if we do this ;)

Thanks :)

Yea I kinda noticed that when we went to check the grounds out.  I just want to make sure we have a spot with the fencing because I have an idea in mind to rig up our play yard gate with the fencing to keep little one more contained.

Also who ever we are next to I'm hoping doesn't mind the shreaks of screaming that may take place from time to time  :yikes:

hahaha!

We definitely don't need two sites- extended family is going to Shoshone.  Kristi doesn't want to go so we still haven't decided whether she stays home and I go to Shoshone or we go to Newport with y'all.

For a Friday arrival...... what is the earliest we can arrive to setup?

Since we are paying for Thursday but not using it (at least at the moment we don't think we will be... but of course that could change closer to the trip)  anyway since we already have that spot reserved we can come in anytime on Friday?

UPDATE: 10/2/08

CHECKS DUE BY OCT.  20TH!

Not to be cheap (but I am) However if we have so few people going do we really need the extra group site?  We could all fit in Lori's trailer with no problem!  Or the new one that dee gets at the RV show!

How about San Diego KOA?

I called and they do have spots available.
5 site minimum
no extra charge for pets
Full hookups
$42.90/night with a 2 night minimum
She said the sites allow 2 adults and kids are free. You only pay $4 extra for additional adults.
The sites would be upfront by the playground

Disclaimer: I have not camped here before but have heard alot of good things about it.

Sounds good.  if we do this we would probably go fri instead of sat, since its farther away.  If we could get sites near theplayground that would be even better...

I will post this on the first page along with your site assignments. If you are coming in on WED. YOU must call newport dunes and reserve your site.

RALLY IS THURS-SUN Nov 27-30
Edited 10/02/08:

Those committed (or who should be committed )

1. Griffsclan WED-SUN site #2201
2. Dee4j WED-SUN site #2204
3. Azusateach WED-SUN site #2210
4. dkutz THUR-SUN site #2205
5. jendak760 WED-SUN site #2212
6. 58Air WED-SUN site #2203
7. Gracy Fri-Sun  site #2207

13. available site #2216
14. group site site #2202

Whatever I tell Nick the rally days are, we must maintain 10 sites. If we end up with 9 commitments, I will keep the 10th for the group rate and split that site's fees among the 9 of us. This will be much cheaper than everyone paying $71/night.

Looks like we've got enough interest--please read below for details on this rally. Dee4j and I will be co-wagonmastering this one.
