. :# Friday, July 31st -- Tues, August 4th :# .

Smithwoods RV– Felton, CA is about a 10-15 minute drive from Santa Cruz. We really enjoyed our week in the Redwoods. The area is beautiful and there are many things to do in the area. The RV Park is in a beautiful setting and I don’t think the temperature went higher than 86ΓΈ. We only had one morning that was cool and foggy and it burned off by 10:00am. It also cooled down nicely during the night, chose to use the heater a couple of times to take off the chill. Really, the only negative remark that I would say is that the bathrooms that are down where the bulk of the sites are located do not have showers. The showers are up the hill next to the pool. But this really turned out to be a minor inconvenience.

Full service sites -water, electric, sewer, cable tv, picnic tables, fire pits, Free Wi-Fi access for registered guests

http://www.smithwoodsrvpark.com (//%22http://www.smithwoodsrvpark.com/index.htm%22)

RVs 36' in length or less RVs 37' in length or more
$53.00/night $73.00/night
$318.00/week $438.00/week
Rates include four people and one towed or towing vehicle, Sorry, no tents!
They do not offer group discounts but do have a 10% Discount for seniors (55 yrs), AAA, RVing Rewards (discount applies to daily rates)
$2.00 additional person/pet per site (maximum 6 people per site)
$10.00 additional vehicle per site

Cancellation policy: for "new" clubs during the summer is 30 days prior to arrival for a refund (June 30). If a member cancels less than 30 days prior to arrival, there is no refund.

A total of 35 sites are reserved. Site #72 has been reserved and is next to the group area (picture below) which includes a large barbecue, a counter area, about six picnic tables and a fire pit (Dee would be on cloud nine) Also, there is plenty of room to pile firewood. This would be a great place for potlucks, late night fires, karaoke, or whatever anyone else can think of. Also notice that the bathrooms are centrally located in the midst of our sites.

Interested Parties
"CONFIRMED" - means I've received your deposit.

[LIST=1]
The campground requires a 50% deposit 90 days prior to arrival (April 30th) with the balance due 30 days prior (June 30th). I will calculate your site fees and the deposit amount needed to secure your spot. Any sites not secured by a timely receipt of the 90 day deposit will be made available to the those on the waiting list (if applicable) or released back to the campground.

The calculated fees will include the added cost of reserving site #72 next to the fire pit group so we can use it for any potlucks, games, kids activities, karaoke or any other activites. If all 34 sites are filled that's only $6.17 more per site for the entire weekend. If only 20 sites are filled it's still only $10.49 each.
Anyone wishing to extend their visit beyond the 4 nights of the rally may do so by calling the campground. In order to take the benefit of all their discounts, all fees will be paid through me, so be sure to let me know ASAP of your site # and extended dates.

Please complete the following information and return to me via PM or e-mail ("crabtreelighthouse@yahoo.com") to reserve your spot. After I receive your information I'll send you a PM or e-mail with your deposit information and where to mail your check. You could copy and paste the following list.

Sounds like fun Bonnie.  We have been wanting to go to the Redwoods.  Are the sites full hookup?

School starts usually the 3rd week of August around here so for us the  middle to latter part of July works well.

Good question Jacqui,

I believe all their sites are full service sites -water, electric, sewer, cable tv, picnic tables, fire pits.

Bonnie, Please count us in! Over the past 3 years, we've stayed at Smithwoods several times. The owners are super friendly and there's lots to do in the area...surfing, Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, steam train ride through the redwoods, great pool and rec room and one loop features a huge firepit and gathering area (Dee). Some of the sites overlook a very picturesque brook.  On the selfish side, it would be the shortest travel we've done to camp with this great group of folks.

Bonnie,

WE live in the San Diego area and its a long trip for us.  Depending on the gas situation next year.  I personally would like to see one closer or in the middle for us.  We have attended that last 5 years of SCCampers Rallies.

Bonnie
We would also be interested in this rally. I vote for the last half of July
Title:
Post by: kimrb266 on Aug 13, 2008, 02:21 PM
We're in.  Either date is good for us.  We're planning on going to Santa Cruz next year anyway and we may do an all day trip into San Francisco to visit Alcatraz and other sites.

We are also going to attempt to get a site in Yosemite in July/Aug so let's see what happens.

Bonnie,
This sounds and looks like a great spot.  We are definitely interested and will just wait to see what dates you choose before we can make the commitment.  What about a 4th of July rally?
Title:
Post by: dkutz on Aug 13, 2008, 03:37 PM
I would love to go, we love the area and have been to the train before its very beautiful.  My first choice would be early summer like right after school lets out.  Or First week in august I think.

Now if I can talk the DW into the long haul!
Title:
Post by: 58Air on Aug 13, 2008, 06:13 PM
We too are interested, just let us know the dates - thanks
Title:
Post by: 6Quigs on Aug 13, 2008, 08:00 PM
Seeing as it is only 23 miles from our house, we are interested.
Not sure what exactly our plans are for next summer, but sign us up and we will make it work. We will need 2 sites as Margaret's sister will want to camp with us.
Title:
Post by: cjpoppin on Aug 13, 2008, 10:58 PM
This sounds like fun and at this point and time it looks like a go for us so put us down for a site.  Think the end of July is good or what ever the group goes with.

We'd be interested!  The girls and I have never seen seen the Redwoods...it is on my list of things I want to see.  As far as dates, the earlier in the summer, the better for me, like early July.....

We would like to go too.  However with a kid in school we are hoping that you can make it earlier than mid August, if so add us in.

I voted for July...looking at the calendars and making a guess the weekend of July 24th

So far it's neck and neck for July and August.  How does July 30th - August 3rd look?Post is still new.  We'll keep watching the replies.

Well I don't get done with summer school until July 31st so we wouldn't get there till Aug 1st.  Of course we could tack on extra days on the "other side" for our family...

Before July 10th or after July 31st would be PERFECT.  OTherwise, we will work with it.  If its during the three weeks I teach summer school then we are out...

Okay, well I don't like the end of July...my mom's 65th birthday that week...party will be planned...can't keep missing parties or things are going to get ugly with my family.  So, I change my vote to the first week of August now.....

Still like beginning of July better....

I'm in.  I like the earliest possible time in August, or even July.  We'll be back in school before Labor Day and I don't like rushing to get ready.

I called today and discovered that next summer filled up pretty fast this past month for next summer. When we were there a month ago next summer was pretty open. However, I was able to reserve the weekend of

.             :# Friday, July 31st -- Tues, August 4th :#           .

I know this is a little unconventional, but I'm not into conforming. :D I hope this doesn't leave anyone out. The fire pit area was booked for Thursday. I have reserved 35 sites. They will be sending me a packet regarding group deposit, fees, etc in a few days. They will get a reservation deposit of $100 from me after the first of the year. A 50% deposit will be required 3 months prior the rally.

Sounds good to me, Bonnie.  Thanks for all of  your hard work.  Heck, we've got a year to get schedules arranged.  Can't be all that hard for folks!
Title:
Post by: dkutz on Sep 05, 2008, 09:17 AM
Well I was hoping for August, but we may be able to make it work.  I teach summer school until the 31st.  So we have two choices, leave after summer school for the LONG drive.  Or leave early sat morning.

I think that If we go it would be early sat morn.  I had really hoped to take our time getting there, maybe stop a few places etc.  Maybe we will do that on our return trip.

Mapquest says 390 miles on way about 6 hours more like 7.  :yikes:  :yikes:
Of course it took that long to get to Flying flags last year, so its all relative.

:S Ok, I promised you financial info and details, so here goes.

Please complete the following information and return to me via PM or e-mail to: crabtreelighthouse@yahoo.com ("crabtreelighthouse@yahoo.com") to reserve your spot. After I receive your information I'll send you a PM or e-mail with your deposit information and where to mail your check. You could copy and paste the following list.

Hi Bonnie, Thanks for wagonmastering this. Please put us down for Friday to Tuesday. Its nice to go North for once, always wanted to see Santa Cruz area. We are in Bakersfield, we maybe the closest outside of you locals.

Tell me when to mail the money. If we are on the waiting list, please keep us informed as far in advance as possible so I can juggle the job.

Jamesdad.

PS, Maria is looking forward to seeing you again.

Hi, Bonnie, thanks for taking the helm on this rally.  Sign us us for 2 adults & 1 dog for Fri-Tues.  I haven't been to the Redwoods since I was a kid.  This looks like a great place to camp!
thanks,

I really did miss this thread somehow.... :eyecrazy: .

I think that it may have been the title, "Smithwoods RV Rally". I've never heard of Smithwoods RV. It sorta sounds like something back East. I guess I just got used to skipping over it. I don't know how anyone can read all of the posts on this board. :book: ....Some of us have to work for a living.... :p

Bonnie,

Unfortunately we won't be able to make it to this rally because it is the same weekend as our annual trip to Pismo Beach so you can take Chez Way off the "interested" list.  Maybe we'll see you guys on the 101...

We're in early discussions with 58Air and Darksiders for a 4th of July rally...we'll post when we have details.

That's how long we drive once or twice a summer to camp with ya'll down south.

It's not so bad, just stop a time or two to stretch your legs, have a snack. Actually, I love to do long trips. It takes a while to relax and the longer drives allow for that.  It also makes the anticipation more exciting as you get closer to your destination.

We just got back from a trip up to Bridgeport, CA. That's about the same distance.

What you have to keep in mind is that these computer estimates take the posted speed limit into consideration. Bridgeport is supposed to be a 6 hr drive. I drive 75-80 (above the speed limit) and it took us 6 hrs (no traffic).

If we were pulling our trailer, we would probably be going 15MPH slower than we were going on this trip. That would have made it an 8 hr trip. :eyecrazy:

This is just a some information regarding the road to Smithwoods.

If you take Highway 9 - from Highway 1 - it is very windy and the turn into Smithwoods is near impossible to turn into- very sharp and steep- You will have to go down to Henry Cowell State Park and turn around.

This is what Smithwood recommend for travelers:

We recommend travelers coming in from Highway 1 (CA-1) take Highway 17 (CA-17) to Mount Hermon Road. Follow Mount Hermon Rd to Graham Hill Road and then left on Highway 9 (CA-9).

I just spent the week-end at Smithwoods - nice place-clean and the staff was pretty nice.

I definitely agree.  The distance is about the same either way you go. But I would not go up Hwy 9 from Hwy 1 pulling a trailer.  We certainly took Hwy 9 when we went to Santa Cruz for the day. It's a beautiful drive.

Thank you very much for giving us the info on Hwy 9........I had already done a map quest and you guessed it.......They had us going Hwy 9.... we would have had fun and my DH blood pressure would have been off the chart.....I think map quest should have a box you could check for traveling with a towed trailer......Oh well Thanks again Miss Kathy.......

Add about an hour and half to that time and you'll get the driving time for us....However we take small breaks plus a lunch break we are also thinking about staying overnight somewhere due to the long drive on this trip......Old people are like young kids we need lots of bathroom breaks.....Heeeheeee

By looking at the campground map, it looks like we are going to be in the lower southeast corner of the park.  Is that correct?  Are there some sites already assigned or there other arrangements being made for campers that are extending their stay beyond the window of the rally?
It is just that I had noticed some numbers by some of the names on the list and was just curios.

Thanks,John

Southeast corner, Yes, we have almost every site within this larger circle.  Those who have extended their stays have called the campground and they were assigned a site within this group of reserved sites.  Give them your information and make your reservation. Let me know your site number and dates. All payments will be made through me.

We are planning to go to the Roaring Camp Railroad while in the Felton /Santa Cruz area.  We were there 7 or so years ago and loved it.

They have two choices.  One steam train through the redwoods.  Or they also run a train to the Santa Cruz board walk  (something we also plan on doing).

If anyone else is interested let me know and I will contact them to find out about group rates.

Thanks

So this rally is going to be our BIG summer vacation.  We are stopping in Arroyo Grande on the way up to visit relatives.  But would like to stop somewhere fun on the way home.

Any suggestions for a fun stop on the way home?  Maybe Big Sur??  What do you think??

Post by: boncrab on Feb 16, 2009, 10:25 PM
Here's another great thing to do since you may be going by it anyway...

Pebble Beach 17 Mile Scenic Drive:   One of the most scenic drives anywhere in the world, this stretch of highway runs between Pacific Grove and Carmel. You will see incredible beaches, six golf courses and more mansions than you can count. You will drive by several epicurean restaurants, all of which will refund the USD8 toll fee that you pay to drive this road. Pedestrians and cyclists can enter for free. The road snakes its way like a serpent, along the California coast and then through the Del Monte Forest. This drive is an absolute must for anyone visiting the Monterey Peninsula. Bring lots of film. See website for visitor details.    http://www.pebblebeach.com/page.asp?id=1373 (//%22http://www.pebblebeach.com/page.asp?id=1373%22)

Man lots of looking.  I posted all over to try to get people's opinions but found none.  In the end I had three places I was looking at.  Called to see what they had available, and came down to two.  I picked fernwood, it was next door to the one of the other "finalist".

Started search on this site  http://www.rvparkreviews.com/index.html

Called these sites
Fernwood
Big Sur Campground and Cabins
Riverside CG

I did my best to try and make the picture larger.

If you click on the picture and print it, it prints out larger. Just be sure to go to the page setup and choose landscape before printing.  It's easier to read.

If anyone else knows how to make it larger in powerpoint (saved as a JPEG) let me know.

Title: Cancellation Policy
Post by: boncrab on Feb 23, 2009, 07:45 PM
Cancellation policy for "new" clubs during the summer is 30 days prior to arrival for a refund. If a member cancels less than 30 days prior to arrival, there is no refund.

If you have to cancel, hopefully, there will be someone else to take your spot.

Can someone give me my site # and who is around me.

Hey all,

We have a couple of site changes already.  Jendak and Jendaksbro will be moving so they can be next or near each other. That leaves site I open and hatlet will me moving there as they requested to be near recumbentman.  That leaves site 62 currently open.  Not sure yet where jendak and jendaksbro will end up, I have e-mailed the campground with an option.

Please see the FIRST post and the camper list for your site assignment.

Also, the sites along the bottom, sites 65-71, have changed. They have widened those sites instead of 8 sites there, there are now only 5.  They have given 3 other sites for our group should we need them.

I will update the site map and try to make it clearer.  See back later.

Ain't it fun being Wagonmaster,

Well I just found out that the district is cutting back on summer school this year, SOOOO.  Good news is we can leave early friday for our trip up.  Bad news is, we may not have money for gas by the time August rolls around.

Its gonna be a tight summer.  Not much camping for us....

I have gotten a reply from the campground and a couple of other site adjustments have been made.

1.   Jendak760 and Jendaksbro are now in 63 & 62, respectively.
2.   Pop-up Posse has been moved to site 73, vacated by Jendaksbro.
3.   and Surfcampers are now in 77.

Post by: JohnandLeann on Mar 03, 2009, 08:51 PM
We were going to stay here at Henry Cowell Redwoods SP but have changed our plans.
We have site #90 available to anyone who wants to buy it.
Res is for Mon Jul 27 to Fri Jul 31 for 4 nights.
This is a dry campground, meaning NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED IN POSESSION
OR CONSUMPTION.
We are then still planning to go to Smithwoods on Friday the 31st.
I will leave this available until after the upcoming weekend. On March 9, I will cancel this reservation.

From what I have been told, they really don't want open containers.  You just need to disguise what you drink.  This campground is supposed to be beautiful and VERY quiet.

We were going to use our cups that hold a 1/2 bottle of wine each perfectly.  But I saw another place that was posted by Dkutz I believe.  Sorry if I am wrong.  Fernwood looks like nice place also so that is where we have changed to.  We will be going there before the rally.  Hopefully my work will allow me to take off a few days into August for vacation.  They really want us Custodians at our sites two weeks before school starts and getting into August is not good in their eyes.  I will know shorlty cause we are to be getting our vacation accounts to plan for the next year.  Kinda difficult to plan your vacation a whole year in advance sometimes.

The Julia Phiefer area is beautiful so I think that with a stream running through the campground, it should be nice.
Once you get passed Ragged Point, the gateway to Big Sur from the south, the coast is just gorgeous.  I think my only concern might be the burn areas and the damage done there.  Just have to remember fire is a part of nature too, and has its own beauty.

Us too this will our longest trip with the new TT we'll be staying at a CG in King City for two days then off to Smithwoods and staying there for two weeks with lots of side trips hopefully then if all works out we'll head off to Grants Pass,OR. work our way back home taking maybe five to six weeks total.......Lots will depend on gas prices and if I get enough money saved for this trip. Even if we don't make it to OR. we'll have a truly great time at Smithwoods.......

Darn retirees.

Sounds like a great trip. In my youth, mom and dad piled 8 kids into a 21 foot Winnebago and did a 4 week trip to the east coast and back.
Several years later they drove all the way to Newfoundland and back, a 7 week journey. Although that trip only had mom and dad and 6 kids.
It can sound daunting to spend this much time on the road in an RV, but we never failed to have a fantastic time.

What great memories your family must have.  When I was younger and when our kids were younger we Tent camped and I think our longest trip was only three weeks.  But we too always had a super time.
I would have loved to have had a RV would have made life soooooooo much easier for me anyway........Hahaaaaaaa

We are, from what I can tell from our reservation, in #11, electric site.

Quote from: dkutzWe are planning to go to the Roaring Camp Railroad while in the Felton /Santa Cruz area.  We were there 7 or so years ago and loved it.

They have two choices.  One steam train through the redwoods.  Or they also run a train to the Santa Cruz board walk  (something we also plan on doing).

If anyone else is interested let me know and I will contact them to find out about group rates.

Thanks

http://www.roaringcamp.com/index.html

NOTE:  I just Noticed "a day out with THomas tank engine" is on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd.  I would avoid these days at all costs.  We would go after that event to avoid the crowds....

Hi,

I would be interested in the train rides.

Bonnie,

I PM'd you but thought i'd let you know on the boards too--we have friends who would like to join us on this rally. I hope that you haven't released all the sites yet, and that they can still reserve one with the group.

Thanks!

We now have 26 totals sites filled with 51 Adults, 38 Children, and 14 Pets.  Could be 17 pets if OC Campers decide to bring their 3. WOW.
A few more pets and they will out number our children....lol

I will be making the deposit in the next day or two... If you are wanting to be a part of this rally. Please send me an e-mail or a PM and we can coordinate attempting to get you added. From the sounds of my conversations with the campground they will probably have every site full.  It is a popular site.

If we cannot get you a site, we will start a waiting list in the event someone has to cancel or a site at the campground opens up.

Thanks all for your cooperation while I learn how to be a wagonmaster.

I still remember the trick Ray played on Dee at Pismo. Ray was getting beers for Dee and without her knowing it, Ray was puncturing holes in the can so when Dee took a swig her tee shirt got all wet. Dee had a little too much to drink that night and it took "several cans" of beer before she knew what was going on. The group was howlin'. That's Ray - always the prankster.

no it was ONE can of beer and the part you all keep LEAVING out was that it was in one of those coleman METAL koozies and I THOUGHT it was condesation..because that happens with those. and there is no such thing as too much to drink....well except in Pete's case :J

I sent the campground some questions, following my question is their response.

Q. (I understand that) from this (deposit) forward any new campers will be required to call you to make a reservation. Please let me know how the money will be handled?

A. If you have new campers after April 30, have them call the office and we will process them as individual reservations. They would pay us their deposit and pay the balance upon check in. They would still get the 10% discount. Mention you are with the SCCampers rally to get the discount. Be sure to let me know your arrival and departure dates, site number, and number of Adults, Children & Pets.

If you are currently registered through me and wish to extend your stay, please call the campground and they can check to see if your site is available. You may be able (if willing) to get another site for the extended days and then move to/from the site assigned during the rally. Payment for these extra days will be coordinated and paid to the campground. Your existing rally days will be paid through me.

FINAL balances are due to me no later than June 20th in order to pay the campgound the total balance due by June 30th. Cancellations are refundable up to June 30th. If you have to cancel after June 30th, hopefully someone else (waiting list) will take your site.

Q. If others would be interested, could we work out a time to schedule a karoake night during our rally using your equipment (they have an extensive song list). If possible, what times would be best for you? Our family had a good time singing when we camped there last summer.

A. We can hold a karoake night on Saturday, August 1. We would have to allow all the campers to participate if they choose to.

Q. We should be starting to put together some rally activities in the near future. Can you let me know what facilities you have available for gatherings and what times these would be available and if there is any cost. We have a small group who like to play poker in the evening after the kids have gone to bed.

A. Your campers can play poker around the campfire or in the clubhouse. The clubhouse is available for reservations free of charge after 5 pm.
I'll block it out for you now for 7/31, 8/1, 8/2, & 8/3 from 5pm to 9:30 pm and you can let me know what nights, if any, you would like to use it.
I made a phone call in response to the 9:30 time, they may allow us to use the room for poker play up til midnight. ARE THE POKER PLAYERS INTERESTED IN USING THIS ROOM?

We also have a billiards room with 2 pool tables ($0.50/game)...tournament possibility..
Any pool players????

When I yahoo from Felton to Mendocino this is what I get
Taking highway 280 up the Peninsula     225.42 miles
Taking highway 101 up the Peninsula     226.42 miles
      Taking highway 17/880                       227.35  miles
to the right of the Bay

Having lived in Hayward, my first choice would be to take 17/880, second choice would be 280.

Please read my post dated 05/12 in this thread. Let me know if you would like to reserve the clubhouse for poker or other suggestions, have a pool/billiards tournament, or a Karoake night.

Let me clear up the Mystery here.

We have the MYSTERY SPOT in Santa Cruz and
The WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE in San Jose.

The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz is a place where Gravity defies the normal laws of physics. Watch a ball roll uphill, and other weird stuff.

The http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/ is where Sarah Winchester Lived and according to popular belief, Winchester thought the house was haunted by the ghosts of individuals killed by Winchester rifles, and that only continuous construction would appease them.

Both places are worth a visit.

The Winchester Mystery House is located in San Jose and was owned by the rifle heiress Sarah Winchester.  She thought she would die if she stopped building onto her house so she continue to build for 40 years.  She did weird things to her house like building stairs to no where, doors behind walls, windows indoors, etc.  It looks like a neat place to go.

When I posted above, I thought the "Mystery Spot" was the same place but now I know it's a different place.

Bonnie,

Do you have a idea of the ages of the kids that we have coming and how many?  I was thinking of bringing some crafts for them to make depending on the ages.  Also, the bean bag baseball is almost done, I will post a picture of it when it is finished.  It is a fun game for everyone to play

It looks like this trip may just get extended for us too. We've been invited to join some friends over at Coldwater campground in Mammoth after this rally. This means an early morning departure on Tuesday, then a 6+ hour drive through Yosemite and down Hiway395 to Mammoth. Only if they can get us a site in Coldwater on Tuesday morning though. I'd hate to make that drive only to get there and find there are no available sites.

Looking forward to the end of July. Is it too early to start posting potluck contributions yet?

Looks like this trip will be extended again we'll be leaving for Oregon after our stay at Casper Beach.  Total time gone 5 weeks we have to be home in time for San Mateo in Sept.......This will be a first for us to be out on the road this long but it is something we have always wanted to do.  Now that I have more time between pump fill ups we can do it.......Hip Hooray......
I will have to give the pot lucks a little more thought.......Post as soon as I make up my mind.......

This may sound like a stupid question but this will be our first Rally.  How are the potlucks organized?  How do you plan for the amount of food for everybody?  Do you plan for your own main dish and supplement sides by the potluck?  We have been using our DO and experimenting with different dishes with excellent results so far.  Any input from the Pro's. would be very helpful.
Title:
Post by: cjpoppin on Jun 28, 2009, 01:50 PM
Hummmm good question about the amount for pot-lucks I once read that it is enough for your family plus 4-6 extra people.  Just make that DO dish and bring it on over to dinner on Sat. or Sat. Morning and watch it empty...
Sometimes I make a main dish and a dessert for dinner or just a salad it really is up to you we SCCampers eat almost anything.....On big rally's like Smithwoods I make a little extra due to lots of people coming....carol

welcome and no that's not a stupid question I don't do DO but enjoy it..so if you have a DO dish that you like to make that would be perfect. I generally try to make enough to serve 10-12.I don't think anyone has ever walkied away from a potluck hungry. If parents keep check on their kids and everyone remembers that a spoonfulsample of many things equals one Ginormous plate that leaves you wishing you hadn't eaten that much

as far as organization well we "usually" do breakfast potluck sat. morning at 9-ish and dinner at 6-ish and some of of like to post what we are bringing (not required) and the wagonmaster usually keeps a list going on page one

Bonnie has gotten an exra site for us to organize all of us in and the food gets somewhat put on the tables from salads/appetizers main and sides to desserts

you will find that we are pretty eazy going and there isn't any Real rules..

R we there yet???

Thanks for the input.  We are giving some thought to our contribution.  We will probably make a couple of dishes for everyone to try.  Looking forward to it.  The kids, big and little will love our campfire roasted Twinkies.  I would highly suggest everyone bring a box of Hostess Twinkies.  They will go fast.  Yes, my wife says I act like a five year old at times.

Yes, it is usually in the low to mid 80's. Keep in mind this is only a few minutes from the coast in the Santa Cruz mountains.  We could have some cool mornings & evenings if the fog rolls in.  I do not anticipate it getting near the 100's.  We are really looking forward to it ourselves.  We are currently at 109 degrees in the San Joaquin valley.

"Hey all,

You've probably heard by now the report of Jim's health, Carol and Jim (cjpoppin) have had to cancel their trip to Smithwoods.

If someone new would like to join our rally at this time, Site G (Maximum trailer length 27', slide OK)  in the circle is currently available for the next few days. They had it reserved Tuesday 7/28 - Monday, August 10th. You may reserve any number of days during this time.

As this cancellation happened after the final payment was due and no refunds will be extended whoever takes some of their reserved days will help defray the costs to cjpoppin.
Let's keep Jim in our prayers.

they gave me a full refund last year and it was within the 30 days...this is for a medical reason he is not allowed to travel it's not just to cancel. maybe instead of a refund you can ask them for a camping credit..... she has a 2 week reservation and you know darn well they will have the site filled and make double $$. You may want to remind them that their customer service towards me is one of the reasons we are having the rally there and could be a yearly event...most campgrounds give full refunds within 7 days to 72 hours.. reason being they may not fill the spot on such short notice..they had a 25 day notice they can fill it...they're going to be that picky for 5 days...regardless they should get a refund for all the days that fall in the 30 day period....if you want me to contact them I will....
Title:
Post by: OC Campers on Jul 06, 2009, 09:55 AM
I think if Carol is able to give them a note from Jim's Dr. that he is unable to travel, they should have no problem.  I know the campground has rules but this was a medical issue.  I could understand the rule if they changed their mind and decided not to go but this was beyond their control.

Calm down. I hadn't even called yet. I was waiting till today to call, knowing that the 2 ladies who coordinate the rallies may not be there on the weekends.  Also, as it turns out they are both out of town until Wednesday.  She will be calling me on Wednesday.

IN THE MEANTIME..... If anyone else (or two or three, lots of days available) would like to snag some of the days.

I am still hoping that they will give at least some back in a refund...

I never said that we didn't have the money.....I just said that we budget it out differently. For one thing, we're paying off a 30-year mortgage in 7 years (4 to go). See what that would do to your budget.

Actually, we have a wedding coming up (Jeff & Lisa....and Kenai). Too much going on right now.

I would like to have the kids make picture frames out of popscicle sticks
for something to take away from trip- Smithwoods has a great spot for taking pictures by the swimming pool area.

I would take a picture of each family or group or indiviual and print out the picture for each of them. I have an Epson Printer that prints only 4 x 6 pictures - I already have the ink and the paper-

so if any one has any "popsicle sticks" and small glue guns  laying around can you let me know - I will bring some that I have and some items for the kids to decorate the front of the frames.

What routes are people taking to the campground from So. Cal? I was thinking of taking the 405 to the 5 or maybe the 101 up?

Depends on what your needs are. the 5 will be the quickest way, but boring and hot ;)
The 101 is scenic & cooler, but of course slower. Are you driving straight through or are you breaking up the drive into two days :o
A stop at flying flags along the way would be a good stop over for you and you could just go into the grass area and not even un-hitch

we are going up the 101 and staying in a no tell motel in arroyo grande on fri night.  as for getting to the 101 we usually take the 405, although I hate the traffic.  IF anyone knows of a quicker way let me know.

leave at 4 am;)  I'm taking the 101..stopping at flying flags the first night the kids have been wanting to go. just parking in their tent area and not unhitching. on the way back I thought of taking the 5 cause it's faster but I'm just thinking how HOT it wil be when we stop...remember Yosemite. my sister will be with me for the drive back

Hey Dieter
How come you are not staying at the Avila Hot spring resort You had asked about it awhile ago. It would be an OK place for a one night-er and your kids can swim in the pool and you can sleep in your own bed.
As for the 101. I have been using the 126 instead of the 101 when the traffic is heavy. The 126 is such an easy drive compared to the heavy congested 101.

I think it was $$$ if I remember right.  Plus we don't want to pop up and take down, just sleep and go.... I will look into the 126 no idea what time we are leaving yet...

I think the general concensus is to have a potluck breakfast Saturday morning and a potluck for supper.

Kathy is bringing beanbag baseball.  general instructions of the game (//%22http://www.timberman.com/ENTRTAIN/bbbaseball.htm%22)
A suggested time to schedule a game or competition (perhaps a tournament) was Sunday early afternoon.  She also will have it in her campsite and has graciously made it available anytime.

Let your kids know that I am bringing my beads (adults too).  Kathy has put together a picture & frame making craft for the kids.

Share your potluck dishes and activity ideas.

it just dawn on me. What do we tell the campground office, so they know we have already paid. Is it listed under our sccampers name? our real name or do we need to know the site number to check-in ?
Title:
Post by: boncrab on Jul 20, 2009, 11:38 PM
Good Question:

When you checkin, let them know that you are with the SCCampers group, using your REAL name.

If you have a change in the number of people or pets from what you had registered with me, they will adjust the amount owed and you can settle up upon checkin.

They also like to escort and will assist you, if necessary or requested, with getting into your site.

Dkutz, if you arrive by breakfast, park it and walk down for breakfast. I'm sure they won't mind if there is room until you are able to get into your site.

Here is a reply from the campground regarding the karaoke, horsehoe pits and CHECK IN TIME.

Check in is at 2 pm.  We''ll know more about the karaoke on Thursday.

We don't have horseshoe pits, but I will ask if there is a place to set it up and get back to you.

Great America is offering 4 tickets for $99.00 the only drawback is that you have to pick a date and purchase on line- but this is a really good price-

The park is located about 45 minutes from Felton- in Santa Clara, CA

Easy driving freeway, all the way.

Me, too, Brad!

We (Marianne and I) are leaving Saturday for Yosemite -- we got a spot!!  It's only for a night, but it's the Valley and we can do it.  So we'll spend a night at and Escapees park in Coarsegold Saturday night so we'll be within striking distance of the Valley on Sunday.  Sunday will be spent in the Park, and then we're off to Lake Almanor which is just south of Mt. Lassen, and will be there until Friday.  I take Marianne to the airport in Oakland and head over to Smithwoods -- a big trip!  And then going home I may stop at Jalama Beach, if I can get in.  Rumor has it that Monday & Tuesday are great days to get in, so we'll see.

The trailer's getting loaded tomorrow & the fridge fired up.  We'll head out early Saturday morning.

Two more wake-ups for me, too!!  Woo-hoo!!!

I have heard back from the campground... No, they do not currently have anywhere that we could setup a horseshooe game.

I have not received a response from the camper who had expressed interest in the open site due to a cancellation.  If you or someone else would like to join the rally, Please let me know ASAP.

all this talk about fires and firewood.  I was just looking at henry cowell state park discription and they have a warning that if the county declares a red flag condition, there are no fires allowed.

Anyone know how to find red flag conditions?  Or if the campground is gonna allow fires at this point?

I just got off the phone with the park- they have heard nothing about a Red Fllag" last year when they had fires in the hills, they still were allowed to have fires at Smithwoods-  we will have to use the fire pit for fires. So Wavery you can still come.:-():-()

Hey everyone!

Listen - if you use a GPS to get to Smithwoods, it will take you on a very narrow and scary road with a tough turn in to the park.  Go to the Smithwoods website and find where they tell you the best way to approach the park.  It involves taking the 17 NORTH...here is the quote:

We recommend travelers coming in from Highway 1                              (CA-1) take Highway 17 (CA-17) to Mount Hermon Road.                              Follow Mount Hermon Rd to Graham Hill Road and then left                              on Highway 9 (CA-9).

Once you go this way, your GPS will readjust and bring you in correctly.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Cant wait to get there.  I have a Dr. appt at 820am and then we will hit the road.  The trailer has been shoveled out restocked and she is ready to go.
I couldn't find anywhere where it said the check in time.  Also, is the park bike friendly?

We're back home already!

Even though I complained the whole time about my wacky campsite that was virtually "one with the fire pit", my family and I still had a blast!  It was nice meeting new folks and seeing a bunch of the familiar faces after such a long time!:-()

In all the excitement on Saturday night, after missing the potluck dinner, but returning from a nice visit to San Francisco, I misplaced my wedding band!:(

I believe that I may have left it in the Men's restroom.  Or, it will hopefully turn up in my camper at some point.  But, if you happened to have found a white metal ring with a Celtic knot, that's the one.

The OC's made it home.  For once we were one of the closest to home.(only 4 hours).  What an AWESOME!!! trip.  It was so cool to see everyone again.  The weather could not of been any better.  I think the hottest day was 78.  The kids all had a great time playing together.  It just warms the heart when you see 20 kids playing "capture the flag".  Not sure the rest of the campground liked it but we did.  It appears (as of today) that there were no trips to the ER for any reason.

Monday night almost everyone headed to the Santa Cruz boardwalk for "cheap night".  Every ride was .75 and so were the hotdogs and sodas.  Even the parents went on the rides.  What a blast!!   There were 11 of us riding the bumper cars.  There was a lot of cajoling and screams of "I'm gonna get you".  It was really cool riding the big roller coaster and being able to see the sand and waves at the same time.  Thanks to Dee for the ride there and for Lori and Dave for the ride back to the camper.

We are definately in for next year.  Loved our site so if it is available put us in it.

We enjoyed meeting new people (at least to us) like Hatlet, RSGalt and Gunea.  Thank you Dee for the "skunk" alert the first night.  There were lots of them around but nobody got sprayed.

Carol and Jim you were missed a lot.  We are hoping to do this rally again next year so hopefully Jim will be all better and ready to travel the distance.

This was a trip that ended too short.  We would of happily stayed another 5 or 6 days.  Hopefully nest year.

Jacqui

Well, besides Dan & Kristi I think I left before everyone else -- gotta keep up the tradition, you know!  I was out at 5:55 and made it home at 2:15.  A LONG drive.  There was slow traffic in Santa Barbara & Oxnard, and I just made it home before the fires along the 134 in Glendale broke out.  Whew!

I SO enjoy being with everyone.  I know ... I don't hang out much around the campfire and I didn't do the Boardwalk, but I can't tell you how much you all mean to me.  I feel incredibly welcomed and included, and talk about you all the time (in a complimentary way!).

Bonnie, I'm going on record -- again -- to get my name added to next year's list.

Thanks again for a wonderful time!

We also made it back around 5:00pm. We left the camp ground around 11:00. Great drive home...again. lots of CHP the entire way, but I was not stopped. It was a great trip, we saw the Winchester house, Monterey Bay Aquarium, went on the train ride through the redwoods and saw the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, we had a blast. Potluck, mingling with everyone, poker at night. It was great seeing everyone again. The camp ground felt a little empty and deserted this morning as everyone was leaving..or gone. We will definitely do this trip again, so mark us down as a yes for next year. Bonnie, you did a great job and picked a great camp ground, probably one of the nicest we have seen. Nothing beets the redwoods...and at the beach. It was a fun trip, we are tired and now its time to relax and recuperate. See everyone on Halloween.

Another great rally.
Thanks to Bonnie for being our Wagonmaster, and yes, sign us up for next year.
Smithwoods was nice, especially as it was so close to home for us, the campground was perfect and the staff nice and friendly even if the did have to ask us to be quiet every night.
We had a wonderful time, meeting old friends and making new ones, checking out peoples new rigs, and tow vehicles.
Even our dog had a great time, and we will always remember his first ever dog show. We need to work on new tricks for next year if he has to defend his title.

Photos, I was too busy having fun to be running around taking photos but the few I did take I will post when I get time, so Wavery you will have to wait a day or so.

Hi everyone - Dee's clan has left for UC Davis and Dieter is getting ready to go home - we miss you all and we had a great time. Sign us up for next year with the same spot too! Well we're off soon for a tour of Hogwarts USA as Griffin is enrolling next year. Lori has an interview in October to teach a class for young wizards in the defense of the dark arts. I'm already scheduled to teach a class in magic potions and coach the Quidditch team for Hogwarts USA. Until next time........

Hey Wayne!  If you must see some pics of Smitwoods then check the webshots in my sig.  I have started to upload some of them but have many more to do, and some of them that are posted might even be deleted later during final editing process.  Will try to do some more uploads this evening for your viewing curiosity if I have time.

Stephanie and I want to thank everyone for welcoming us so warmly to the club.  We had an awesome time and we felt like we have known everyone a long time.  Many thanks go out to Bonnie, Kathy and her family for their hard work putting this together.  We were first on the list to commit for next year.  Counting down the days already!!!  Dieter, the train ride was spectacular.  Thanks for coordinating the group.  BTW we almost came back after Stephanie talked to her boss and he asked why we were coming home so soon.

Okay, I'm doing it the old-fashioned way.  I've got a bunch of other pictures in the album and don't want to bore you with them.

Here's the train we took:

A couple of pics of the trees.  Many of them were well over 1000 years old -- even some in the 3000 year range!

And I'm sure most of you heard about my little "excitement" on my way from Lake Almanor.  Thank heaven it didn't come off and hit anyone on the freeway!  Insurance is a good thing -- it's only going to cost me my $100 deductible to have the whole thing replaced.

Fortunately it appears not to have done any damage to anything but the awning.  I heard from my shop today & it's going to cost about $1000 to replace it.  I'll pay $100 ... I like that kind of downsizing!

nice pics.  It was very strange this morning with NO ONE left....even yesterday afternoon when everyone one was at the aquarium.  Smithwoods was very nice.  We would be in for next year, there are lots that we still want to do that we didn't have time for.  Depending on what time of year, and if I get summer school, (yeah right).

We are at Fernwood CG right now, I am emailing from the fireside.  Very pretty place and great Fun for the kids.  Watched a 5'er thry to get in the driveway around the tight bend of the check in building, VERY tight.
PFeifer state bach tomorrow and more river tubing.  Maybe a hike/roll.

See ya

I think I might have it. I picked up a black folding chair and all the time I was carrying it back to my PU, I kept thinking it seem larger than usual. So if you have the smaller black chair, it is properly mine. But I warn you if I have to hold on to it for over a year it becomes mine :U

wayne, dawnnes foot is swollen but she was a trooper.

JOhn, Fernwood was a blast.  Kids loved it.  Did Pfeiffer one morning but it was too cold, and foggy so we didn't stay long.  We had site #9 which was right by the bathrooms and the trash cans, and a wierd site, but it worked out ok.  WOuld love to have a riverside site next time.  If I have time I will do a review for fernwood ont he campsite thread.

Howdy all!  We are currently driving through Sacramento on the way home.

Bonnie - thanks for planning such an awesome rally!  We really enjoyed the campground and the area.  We'd love a repeat next year if it works out!

Azusateach and Kevin Quigley - Thank you both for the directions and pep talk to ignore the GPS and take the trailer over the Golden Gate.  We hit it at sunrise and oh my - it was beautiful!!!!!!

We can now say that we have driven the 101 from start to finish.  Oregon coast - beautiful as always and the drive in WA was great.  We stopped for gas in Forks - setting for the Twilight books.  I was a happy camper!!!:D

Our "RV park" in Sequim was the only reservation we could get on our short notice.  It was horrid - made me want to crawl into the fetal position and suck my thumb.  It was very residential with the average rig age being at least 20 years old and was 10 feet from the street.  the site was dead grass and littered with cig butts.  You haven't lived until you've been greeted by several inebriated residents - lacking teeth but not cold cans of Budweiser! LOL!!!  Needless to say - we hung out at Gramma's house...a LOT:yikes:

Finished it up with a stay on the Rogue River at the Valley of the Rogue State Park in OR.  HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!!  We are headed to Fresno now to see family for a night and my kids got along and were so good the whole time!!!!  (I'm not lying, but probably jinxed myself for the final leg by telling you this!)

It was great seeing old friends and making new ones - see ya at San Mateo!

The Sequim RV Park you  mentioned above was like a Deshevio (sp) from one of our trips.  We stayed at the "Sun in the Fun" RV park in Visalia (I think) and it was alot like your stay.  It was ALL residential and the people I saw were carrying a beer and had cigs in their mouths.   I felt so uncomfortable and out of my eliment.   Here we were in our Niagara High Wall along side all types of RV's.  Our kids didn't care where we stayed but we surely did.  The kids played on their pathetic playground (they thought it was wonderful) and we just wanted the night to end.   When we were on our Smithwoods trip, we past Fun in the Sun and reminised over our stay.  DO NOT SAY THERE!!!!!

It all looks vaguely familiar.  Looks like you had better weather at Pfeiffer than we did.  You also got the site we liked at Fernwood #11. (maybe next year)

Wayne, wouldn't it have been more fun to make the trip with friends!  Always have to be different!

Bonnie, are we set for next year yet?  I have to start saving now.

Oh and did you all hear about the fires up there now?

looks like you all had a great time.  Wish we could have been there.  we did get out while you were gone, we went to Vegas, stayed at the Monte Carlo with the lazy river and wave pool.  Kids loved it.  Heather only gambled $20 but won $1000.  She got a royal flush on video poker with max bet.  with the winnings we extended our trip (why not!).  we actually came home with more money than we left with and were there 5 days!!  Still not the same as camping with everybody though.  Jim and Carol we were thinking of you as we drove by.  We also ate at Bobs Big Boy in Barstow.  I haven't been to one in 20+ years.  Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

WELL ALL......

I am sorry to have to report that there will not be a rally at Smithwoods RV Park next year.  When I attempted to reserve the sites for next summer I was informed that we as a group are not welcomed back.  Their reasons were that we overwhelmed their bathroom facilities, that there were several complaints regarding the noise.  With all of the senior residents I think they are not used to the number of children that our club has.

Whether we feel these reasons are valid or not, every business has to determine the demographics that they choose to cater to. I was and still am very disappointed and I know that several of you will be upset and I hope that you will allow yourselves the opportunity to process this information before allowing your emotions to carry you away.

Remember, it's not the campground that I look forward to the most but I get to spend time with great friends. Sure wish I could see you all more often than once or twice a year.

I have been searching for an alternative place to hold a rally next year.  Look for another post shortly for a list of possible choices.

Bonnie

I am sorry, but we brought a lot of revenue to the campground, and the noise problem could have been avoided had they not put none group members in with us.  I was there when the damn canadiens complained, and we weren't that loud.  And they made us shut down the movie even though I couldn't even hear it 10 feet away.

Oh and don't most of you have bathrooms?  So this bathroom thing is all my fault?  Or did you all save your big stuff for their bathrooms?  ha ha.

Oh and now Dawnne can launch her complaint about none of their facilities being handcapped accessible.  Bathrooms, showers, nothing was...

Let us know what the alternatives are, we loved the area.

I think we were too much for them to handle.  They aren't use to active individuals staying there and kids will be kids and make noise.  As for the bathroom situation,  I didn't find that they were over used, I know that they let the towels and TP run dry at times but I didn't see that they were constantly being used.   The day before we left, we were walking down one of the roads around our sites and a dog attempted to bite RB.  The owners of the dog didn't think anything of it so we complained.  The owner talked to the dog's parents and told them to keep the pets on the leash.  I didn't feel comfortable to have the kids play in that general area.

Smithwoods is a nice campground but there are others out there.  We'll all have to peruse the net and find one for next year.  How about FLYING FLAGS????????  Is this too far SOUTH for the Northern people?

I am not a rabble rouser but this makes me laugh.  I think for a group of 24 families we were very well behaved.  I agree the park was very quiet but that was because it was 1/2 filled with full-timers.  If they have a problem with families maybe they need to turn it into a mobile home park.  There are plenty of other nice RV resorts that would be more than happy to accept our money and business.  I found this one http://www.santacruzranchrv.com/id5.html

I know this one is a little further north but what about Petaluma KOA?  I know Kim and Richard stayed there and had a good time.  Lots of sites and lots of things for the kids to do without getting into trouble.

Hey (From the North)

The Flying Flags meet in the middle was 2 years ago. Nothing against it.  Eveyone liked the location of Smithwoods and enjoyed being in the Redwoods.  There is a campground to the right and left of Smithwoods. The one to the right has lost their campfire permit and the one to the left just isn't laid out in such a way as to accomodate a group of our size (however, this option isn't completely out of the question).  I have a couple of other possible options in the Redwoods and will post them after I get a couple of questions answered.

Wayne, the bathrooms near our group had some sort of pump motor on them to, I would guess, pump it up the hill to the septic tank.  The urinal went down our first day, not sure why, and was never fixed.  And someone packed one toilet with too much TP one day that took them two days to fix.

Oh then the day that the COP's rolled though and Dave had to run to the bathroom to get rid of his medical marijuna...

Well there was the urinal that was out of order way before we arrived there.  I am very sure that they are on a septic system up there.  Their toilets sounded like they had grinders when they flushed, possibly to deal with the solids.  Kinda cramped in the stalls, doors always hitting me in the bum.  There were a lot of us using the facilities, putting a strain on their infrastructure.  Showers that did not always have hot water and shower heads that barely flowed.
The facilities are just needing to be upgraded and I know that costs a lot of money!

In spite of it all, we are sad that we cannot return here. It really was a very nice place to camp!  We were looking forward to next year there.

Thank you again Bonnie for this last rally and we will keep an eye out for the details for next year.
We really like our SCCamper friends and the places that you all go to.

I was afraid that something like this would happen.  I'd heard from some friends that they were pretty choosy about who they let in and hoped that things had changed.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case, but at least they didn't kick us out.  Guess they wanted our money -- at least this summer.

You know, we all went to the Thousand Trails preserve a few years ago and it was manageable.  And there's also Yosemite Pines that would work.  Here's their website:  http://www.yosemitepinesrv.com/index.html

I'd go back to somewhere in Pismo, too, but they've just gotten awfully difficult to deal with after mid-June and not many people can go much earlier than that because of school.

At the rate things are going up there Smithwoods won't be there next year anyway ...

Wow I feel so bad about missing this camp out we really wanted to make this trip.  However just couldn't do it with Jim's health at risk so I hope something is found up in the general area so we can see some of the neat things you all saw....We as a group have never been kicked out of anywhere that I know of we've come close....Hahaaa  I think they must be used to the little old RV groups and just do not care for the frolic of kids.....To bad some people grow so old they can't enjoy the fun and games of kids........Hope I never get that old.......This is one of the reasons we are SCCampers we enjoy the kids and watching them see things for the first time and enjoy their youthfulness.  Keeps us young ya right.........Well where ever next year ends up we will plan on being there......See some of you in Sept....Feels like forever.......

This is their Quiet Time policy:

Quiet Time

It is our goal to provide a clean, quiet and friendly place for you and your family.

We are proud of our quiet time, 10pm to 8am, which we enforce more than any other place in the area.

If that sounds good to you and your family, this is the place for you!

It would never fly with our group.  Otherwise it looks like a wonderful place.

We're never going to please everyone.  I think that whoever wants to wagonmaster a meet-in-the-middle rally needs to pick the place and then stick with it.  People will come.

Interesting. This was one of the quieter SCCampers rallies we've been on. Maybe the lit poker room and the blenders on the bar were too much. No, wait. It was the dull roar of Dee's flame thrower that did it.

Quote from: boncrab;209105With all of the senior residents I think they are not used to the number of children that our club has.

I can see this. It is common and can be very trying for seniors. I can see it with my own folks who remain very active and travel constantly. One or two grandkids is no problem. Get the entire extended family over and grandma and grandpa tire quickly and take a day or two to recover. It's not that seniors don't like kids. Just that they get a bit overwhelmed by them.

Well said. And if it hasn't been said enough already, let me say it one more time: Thank you, Bonnie, for wagonmastering this rally. You are the one that dealt with the CG setting it up, getting all of our questions answered, being our representative during the rally for the "noise" and other issues, and now you're still dealing with the CG. So thanks for doing a great job.

This was a great rally with a great group of folks. Too bad Smithwoods is out next year. We look forward to whatever alternative is chosen.

We are going to Morro Bay in October (after the Halloween Rally). I'll take like a gazillion pics if anyone is interested.

We've been there before (with Brad & Mary) and loved it. It's a great place to kayak too. I didn't take many pics last time but here is what I have:

How do some of you feel about having a rally in the High Sierra Region, near Mammoth or June Lake??

We are going up there in a few weeks. If there's any interest, we could look into it. It's about 300 miles North of Los Angeles, up 395.

It's about 300 miles North of Los Angeles, up 395.

never hurts to look so how many hours is it to get there?

I'm liking the sound of Morro bay but I HATE reserve america:compumad:

Morro Bay sounds good  cause it is close to us, and we like the back loop that is mostly by itself, not in the rows like the others.  But if enough people get together at the same time on January 1st or is it the 2nd, we can probably get a good block of sites that are close to each other for July.

If you are thinking about Lake San Antonio and it is an El Nino rain season like they are forecasting, this could be good as well.  Right now the lake is very low.  There are two areas to camp.  North Shore camping is right at the edge of the lake, which is great cause it gets mighty hot in the summer.  There is also some limited hookup sites but not near the water, a bit of a hike if I remember.
South Shore has more hookups I believe but you have to drive to the water also.  All Sites are FCFS at San Antonio.

It's really beautiful up there. Our daughter and family live in Bridgeport, which is up in that area. We are going there over Labor Day. OC Campers will be up there too (camping). Maybe Jacqui could look at the CG that they are staying in.

The problem is, most of the CGs up there are pretty small. I will have to check around to see if there is a CG big enough for one of our rallies (where we won't overwhelm the %#&@ toilets........).

You're talking 7,000' elevations too. That may leave out some of the SCAMPERS that don't have TVs that will handle it........The grades are not particularly steep but the elevation kills the TVs HP. Even some smaller V8s (like mine) may have a tuff time of it.

I wonder if it might be time to start a new thread for this.......I think this thread is starting to get "Over-whelmed"

would the new word be " overwhelmed"

I would have a hard time with the high elevation- part of the reason not going to Bridgeport with OCCamper.

We really should start a new thread

What about this place??

Hey Kathy,  Olema is North of San Francisco and would make a great NorCal Rally spot but not great for a meet in the middle rally.

Yes lets set those dates or at least which week in July we are talking about.  Am anxious to hear about some of those areas in the Sierras around Mammoth.  I know someone that goes to Mammoth Pools and I think they are on the west side of the Sierras.  I think I am gonna start looking into some spots too, but it will only be from behind my screen. :-()

We love Bridgeport but it is a good 10 hour drive towing a trailer from Southern California.  There is a campground there with hookups at the Lower Twin Lake.  I can check into it when we get there in a few weeks.   Annette's Mono Village is nice also.  Lots of shade and not far from the Upper Twin Lake.  Annette's is also large enough that a rally would be easy there.  They also have cabins you can rent so if you think it is too far to tow you could stay in a cabin.  Unfortunately, it looks like they don't take reservations.  maybe for a group they might

Unfortunately, most of Bridgeports campgrounds are National Forest cg's which you have to reserve on Reserve America.

Wow!  Sounds like we missed a wild time at Smithwoods.  I think this is the first time the ScCampers have been banned. Although we have been known to get some polite suggestions that we quiet down after 10 i don't think we have ever been accused of overwhelming toilets.  Sounds like we have something to be proud of  :yikes:

We stayed at Wine Country RV in Paso Robles over Memorial weekend and I would have to give it a thumbs up if you are looking for an RV style campground with all the amenities that also happens to be walking distance to a winery and next door to a deluxe waterpark.  :! (supposed to be wine glasses)

Morro Bay State Park is a great meet in the middle spot--more of a traditional campground style park with lots of trees and plenty to do in the area--shopping, museum, fishing, kayaking, biking, etc.

We also love Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Lodgepole in Sequoia, Lopez Lake (what's a yellow jacket or 2 if you have bug spray?) and of course Yosemite (do we still have a connection to that park outside the gate?

What about Flying Flags?  Not quite in the middle but it seems to be pretty popular with this group with both hook up and non-hook up options.

I'm just hoping that we'll be able to make it in 2010--it seems that the annual rally almost always conflicts with our summer family reunion in Pismo.

We just stayed in the Mammoth Lakes region (Coldwater CG at Lake Mary) for 4 nights after Smithwoods. Made the drive through Yosemite and over Tioga Pass. This might deter some of the NorCal contingent if they are coming through the Fresno region as you have to pay $20 to drive through Yosemite and then get pushed by your trailer down the incredibly steep Tioga Pass to Hwy 395. Or you could avoid this by using Hwy108. We went Hwy120 and I don't know that I'd do it again.

In the Mammoth area there is one private RV park. We stopped at the office to check on group camping, but the park is in the process of being sold and the clerk did not know anything about group rates or accomdations. They had a partial hookup area that is basically a parking lot -- all pavement with rigs parked right next to each other. The full hookup area was better with trees and you are parking on dirt. If I can find the link for the current ownership I'll post it.

There are also numerous NSF campgrounds throughout the Mammoth area and up into June Lakes. None of these have hookups. Most have water spigots and flush toilet bathrooms. Dump stations are only at limited CGs and charge $7 or more. Some of the CGs have upwards of 100 sites or more, most of which are ReserveAmerica.

Further south on 395 there are "RV Resorts" in Bishop....basically sections of mobile home parks or just parallel parking spots. There are two right in the middle of town that didn't look like anywhere we'd want to stay.

Still further south there are two resorts: one near Big Pine and another at Lost Lake. Didn't have a chance to check out either one of these. They avoid the hill climbs that the southerners would need to do to get to Mammoth and points north, but they are in a very hot section of the Owens Valley.

Morro Bay seems too risky on us getting sites.   In my opinion, we should get group reservations where it is guaranteed that we have a campground to go to.

I Really like Flying Flags.  :)
