UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 7th--changed to Newport Dunes (see new thread)
I'm planning a Flying Flags Rally on Presidents' Weekend 2009 and wanted to check for interest. If we have a total of 10 committed campers, we can get a discount off of the regular $52. per night rate for this weekend in the premium pull-through section. Otherwise, we can just make this a self-serve rally. Since they only reserve up to 100 days in advance, I won't be able to hold the spots until this Thursday. I won't know the exact fee until I speak to the group coordinator, Georgeanne. She has Tuesdays off so I'll post more after I speak to her.
UPDATE AS OF November 5, 2008 (this duplicates my post #34 below)
I just spoke to the group reservation specialist, Georgeanne. Unfortunately, the other "reservation specialists" are not up to speed on the price increase going on at Flying Flags effective January 2009.
So the bad news is that this rally is going to cost $$$ because they are upgrading the park and all areas are going to be designated as "Premium Plus". In addition, since Presidents Weekend is considered a holiday weekend, there is no 10% discount available for groups so we don't even need a 10 person minimum. So to sum it up, the cost for 3 nights is going to be $217.60 ($66 holiday rate plus 10% tax = $72.60 per night). FYI, the non-holiday group rate is $49.28 (includes tax).
Georgeanne is holding 14 sites in the first two rows (7 and 7) of the drive through purple section until Friday....let me know what you guys want to do.
I'm thinking that it would be simpler just to make this a self serve rally because there is no benefit as a group. The upside of self serve is that you can cancel up to three days prior instead of two weeks prior to get a refund.
I'm up for any other suggestions. Yikes!

My DW figured it out of course!
Please count us in, it's been a long time since I could schedule anything.
Just a thought and I'm definitely thinking out loud here, buuuuuuut since it is Valentine's Day weekend, would anyone be interested in renewing their marriage vows as a group if a pastor would agree to come out to the cg? There would probably be some small donation that we could split among the vow renewers.
I'm not trying to push religion on anyone, but Dave's and my church has a casual dinner and ceremony each year where the church members renew their vows, and we've missed it the last couple of years because we've been camping. I definitely want to go camping, but I really like renewing our vows too--kind of helps to keep things in perspective when life gets in the way of "marital bliss. " I could ask our pastor if he has any pastoral connections in Ventura or maybe Brad and Mary would know someone local?

Jim just got on his knees and asked me to renew our vows (with just a slight nudge on my part), so count us in as part of this interesting activity for this rally!

Let's have fun and put on our wedding gowns! Wait a minute, I'll have to diet for that. Ah, Forget it. HAHA! Also, if we renew our vows does this mean that we may have some new SCCampers coming along around Oct/Nov?

Okay where are the smile guys for *faint* and *cry*......... the best I can find is :yikes: :( ................ hahahaha!
I think thats a bit rich for our blood........ if they would have let us have a tent on our spot we could at least split the cost with our friends and it wouldn't have been such a hit. Sorry to have to pull out.... it sounded like fun :(
PS: If the group decides they would like to keep this weekend but change the location........ I would be totally down to join back in maybe and throw in some location ideas............. East Shore in San Dimas has that weekend.... group of anysize..... $44 per night and they do a 10% discount with AAA or Good Sam........ just throwing it out there :)
(http://bestsmileys.com/surprised/1.gif)(http://bestsmileys.com/surprised/1.gif)For that price they better have added fire pits to all the sites!!
When do we have to pay? If its before xmas we may not be able to afford it, if its after we might be able to swing it...
DW adds..And a snow hill and waterslides...and babysitting!
Jeanne, if you're willing to wagonmaster this weekend, would you consider looking into Newport Dunes? Since we've got 10+ people interested we might be able to get a group rate. Just a thought ...
This is too rich for me as well. Makes me sad that we're being priced out of spots that, while they're nice, they're not worth that kind of $$.

Been lurking for some time, looking for a first time rally to join in. Unfortunately, with DW's schedule we can't usually plan far enough ahead to get a spot. This looked like a good possibility, but that price is a bit steep for us.
Bonelli/East Shore looks like a great option. If that should happen we might finally be able to see what SCCAMPERing is really like.
Funny we bought the pup to try to avoid the motel charges, some of these parks are charging just as much! Maybe we should all do cheap motels in Solvang!! ha ha
What about somewhere cheaper like Lake Lopez? Or Far West Resorts in Santa Paula? Wjat was the name of the other San Luis Obispo Park? Was it El Chorro?
Jacqui
Can we get a better rate at Lake Casitas? Or Newport Dunes or whatever the group decides. With the downturn in the ecomony they better adjust their prices or they could be out of business.
How about Canyon RV?
You know its really sad..... and I'm venting out loud here but 70+ dollars just for one night of camping, thats a damn shame. I mean I know they are doing it to keep out the riffraff..... but at the same time it keeps out good people who are hard working and just want an affordable place to spend with their family and some friends for the weekend. Sorry but I have no respect for a place that would price gouge to that extent. Sure we "could" pay that.... we aren't broke but why would we when there are so many other choices out there....... hello... this is So. Cal. we have about a gazillion choices here!?!
Flaying Flags can take a flying -----!
hahahahah!!! Added to the black list! ;)
if it's at canyon RV or Newport I may be able to swing that. but will be in & out of camp. Sunday would be gone a good part of the day
Dieter have you price hotels lately?? we are staying a comfort suites the weekend before and it was one of the cheapest I found ( well That I felt didn't have hourly rates!!) with taxes etc it's coming to about $120
Don't get me wrong, I do agree with you. I was just in shock on how much hotels were, I haven't stayed in one in a long time. I was trying to figure how to bring my HTT instead but way too much effort for the cost savings

yes it is alot, but this is how I determine it's worth it or not. 1. still cheaper than a hotel. 2. bring your own food.
3.eat drink be marry on your schedule not when the restaurant is open.
now Malibu RV wanted something crazy like $90/ night for Mememorial weekend.
they have:
great view, a jont under the road to the beach. not sure if they have wifi or cable...No Fires, no playground, no pool, so to ME not worth to others they don't care..
Flying Flags...all sites have been upgraded nice. I saw some they have done and they looked good. they have cable, wifi, game room, playgound, and the pool is heated to ME worth it, to others not.
Newport dunes has the above as flying flags they also have a craft or activity for the kids 3x a day. sometimes movies on the beach.but sites are small and close together and playground isn't that good and is a little walk to get to...to ME still worth it others not.
Canyon RV..REALLY close to my house...sites are nice and spacious playgound on the other end of the park. no cable or wifi. no heated pool. the pool is heated by the sun so is seasonal. normal rates about $50.
with a group this is great, no group I WOULD rather spend the extrs $20/night to have all the extras for the kids to have fun...but again that is ME..
bottom line I guess it all boils down to what you are looking for and why you camp. I like to go places and do things and get out of the house, but can't afford, resorts, hotels with all the meals out plus, the extra charge for WiFI spending money left and right for activities for the kids.
camping they get to run around with their friends, have fun and I get to relax have cocktails with friends because I don't have to drive anywhere.
In the end we have a great weekend and we are all happy :p
And see thats just the thing... for the most part having a pool, activities and a playground isn't important to me..... even more trivial to me is the WiFi and cable. My kids entertain themselves on their bikes, playing with other kids and kicking rocks! hahahah!!!
I know camping will always be the best value when vacationing....no matter what the rate is........ and trust me Shayne tells me that constantly! But I'm just coming off from spending the last 15+ years camping in the middle of the desert, cleaning my pots and pans in the dirt for free........ hahahahah we spent our money on gas for the bikes :p I guess I have to work my way up to investing in campground fees that exceed our weekly grocery budget! hahahaha!!! And honestly I'm not being confrontational.... just expressing an opinion so I hope ya'll get the gist of where I'm coming from :)
We had a small rally at Canyon RV earlier this year; I believe it was around May but it felt like February. It was COLD (too cold for DH) and a bit rainy but the kids and I enjoyed ourselves anyway. To warm ourselves up, we can go on a bike ride. There is a safe bike path that starts within the campground and goes along some wide streets. The good thing about this is that you are protected by cement barriers and it is landscaped beautifully. I also love the fact that we can get there within 20-30 minutes on side streets.

The Wifi & cable are for me :D but that was the point I was making , to you you don't care about that stuff and there are others in total agreement with you. here's a tip to get camping money if you don't save grocery coupons start. and when they finish ringing the groceries and you've put your card thru etc. go oh shoot I forgot these coupons, they will give you cash back, put that in the camping fund jar...also works well for rainy day money that DH doesn't have to know about ;) it's your salary earned for doing all the shopping :p
something I need to go back to doing again... :(
Okay...looks like I should explore some other options. I'll check with Newport Dunes and Lake Casitas tomorrow and see what is available for Presidents weekend and post when I have the info. I was looking forward to the vow renewal so hopefully we'll still be able to do that. I'll get back to you guys with my report.
I'm still interested in going to Flying Flags and was thinking about MLK weekend in January. Maybe they won't be charging holiday rates that weekend.
Whenever, we've reserved MANY sites at Lake Casitas, we have to pay for each site individually which includes a $7.50 fee and I don't believe they give a group discount. Things may be different now being it'll be off season but it's worth a whirl.
Whew....Would we have to pay it all up front? Or just a deposit? Do love that campground.......Cheaper would be nice however......
We'll go along with what ever the group wants to do.....Just want to camp that weekend...... if we can renew our vows sure would be great......Let us know the plan......cw
if you decide on Newport dunes then count me in.. Saturday is the winter formal not sure if Kevin will want to go and Sunday is the academic decathlon awards in Mission hills :eyecrazy: from 1-5 pm They always make these things mandatory. with Dan work a second job far trips are out for me right now..Halloween did me in. I'm just now getting back to were I was before the rally..

I realize I'm the new kid on the block here, but was anyone else interested in Gracy's suggestion of Bonelli Regional Park - East Shore RV (http://www.eastshorervpark.com/facilities.htm)?
Stayed there years ago with the folks and I remember it as being a pretty nice CG. Playground, pool and rec area, store, lake fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, etc., DVD Rental, Internet, full hookups. Also, they do not consider MLK or Presidents Day as holiday weekends.
Okay. Just my 2 cents worth.

It is a really nice park and well maintained.... its a frequent of ours because its so close to us.......... DH fishes there a lot too ;)
Also about 15 minutes from there is an awesome outlet mall and bass pro shop if anyone has interest in that. San Dimas is also a really nice little town to explore. In the summer Raging Waters is right there so thats a fun place to stay with the kiddos too.

As far as the coupons go.......... I was the coupon queen for years... but now that so many stores have eliminated double coupons I've found its not even worth my time with them............. so DH and I have started buying most of our groceries, the great value brand at super walmart. I make extra spending money on ebay........ you would be amazed what people will pay for your kids used clothing and toys! We're pretty frugal with most household things....... Shayne's mom and sister rag on us for buying generic toilet paper................. Shaynes come back to that is "we buy generic toilet paper so we can buy name brand other things"! hahahahahah........ a campground with WiFi and my coach purses! hahahaha!Quote from: HoagieI realize I'm the new kid on the block here, but was anyone else interested in Gracy's suggestion of Bonelli Regional Park - East Shore RV?

It's funny how as Dee mentioned we all have our ideas of whats worth spending our money on. I would much rather spend $12/night at a nice county park then $70/night at a place with WiFi.
But Gracy has it all wrong. Generic toilet paper? (sigh) I'd rather spend $15 on a purse and splurge on toilet paper. Gracy, I have a welcome to our club gift for you next time I see you. ;) lol I'm kidding.
But regardless of our different tastes here and whats important at a campground, I have a hard time seeing that any campground would be worth $70/night.

you know what the biggest perk is about wagonmastering is picking the campground YOU want to go to and then everyone else decide whether they want to go or not :D
So Jeanne you are in charge..you choose :S
Very true Dee. I haven't been to any of these places that have been mentioned. As long as its in my budget, I'm in.

Generic toilet paper is rubbing in some sensitive areas...
(couldn't resist)
Has anyone camped recently at Bonelli? I drove through there right after buying the PU in 03 and thought -no. There were a lot of full timers just sort of hanging out- Then again, back in the day, I wouldn't know a rally from trailer trash killing time. Maybe I cruised the wrong section.
I figure I got to survive (read: bring the boys home without a cold) the Doheny trip before I figure out my next move. So I'm not going to jump in on this trip just yet. If we're watching the wallets enough to ponder our TP values, I'd suggest looking at the OC county parks (Caspers) or some of the inland Ventura county parks. The rates and conditions are reasonable, and I've never stayed in a spot with hookups, but I know they have some.

There are a lot of fulltimers at Bonelli/ East Shore/ Pudding Stone........... we've always enjoyed it though and
I feel its a nice place......... but then again we are one step away from trailer trash ourselves so may be biased! hahahahahaha!!!
It looks like we are moving this rally to Newport Dunes! I am now holding 15 campsites for this weekend (2/13/09 through 2/16/09). The cost per night including tax is $36.30 for a total of $108.90. The only requirement is that we have a minimum of 10 campsites. I'm thinking that we want to have an extra campsite for the potlucks etc. so we'll split the cost of that (approx. $10 or less each) so we have a spot to gather for meals and the campfire.
Nicholas, the group reservation manager is sending me the contract. Let me know if you are a go for Newport Dunes!
Lori, as our webmaster, do you want to change the name of this thread or should I start a new one?
P.S. Section B at Lake Casitas (my favorite section and the location of our very first ScCampers rally) was all booked up for Presidents weekend. The only availability for our group was in either E or I. I looked at the pictures on the website and the sites did not look very appealing....
