SAN ONOFRE SB: SAN MATEO  CAMPGROUND

 below is a current pic of the campsite map and sites I think we should try for. When I went down there I spoke to the guy at the gate if he knew which sites went first. He said the outside sites and the lower numbers. he suggested going for an inside loop with the higher numbered spaces.  If we go on both sides of the loop we will have a large grass area in the center.
Also the loop I picked has no campground host as the other loop has two (blacked out sites between 12 & 15, 64 & 66)


With your campground fee you can drive over (about 2 mi.) to San Clemente beach and park in their day use parking for free as long as you are displaying the San Mateo cg tag on your car window

I think I'm leaning toward San Mateo...I think it will bethe easiest reserv america reservations to get. anywhere near the beach is going to be hard since it's a holiday weekend and it will be hot..

San Mateo is great with us!

I'll ask DH and see what he thinks.

are you sure school won't have already started?? Labor day is late this year so both of my kids are starting Monday Aug 31st.


anyway. I think I'm leaning more toward San Mateo (San Onofre SB) this way those coming from the North won't have AS far to go but it's a lot closer for those in SD. I can also make it a self serve rally and I won't have to deal with any money :D

We start back after labor day too.  I'm interested in a trip that weekend since my summer camp will be over that friday.  I also vote for any place thats cooler weather!!!  I'll check back for more location details.... but count us in as TBD.

the site circled in red was The one I want. It looks great for night time campfire (and poker) the orange is were campground hosts are and I marked what site's cjpoppin, myself and Dk&3kids had.

Now I know I'm going nuts when I looked at that map the sites just didn't match my minds memory at all........Maybe going on a search of the CG would be a good thing after all.

Talk about confusion!!

We camped in site #49 in October. I remember exactly where it was because there was only one site between us and the entrance station.
On the map posted by myself and Hatlet, this site is now numbered 50.
On Reserve America it is now numbered 51.

And #49 is in a totally different loop!

I now have site maps & Pics from both. so I should have it all done by the end of the weekend. my original plan was to post it by tonite but after I went there, I did earands and picked up kids so now I'm feeling nap-ish..but who knows I may bet my 10 pm second wind :p

my plan is for everyone to choose a site from what I list. that way we aren't all trying for the same campsite.

This will be a great campout right before school begins...or for some after it already started.

yes just go by the number; their map doesn't matter, when you show up to the campground you will go in the space number you reserved. That is why I drove down there and got the campground map from them.

yes...go to the very first post on page one. This page should always be looked at after you sign up for a rally. any updates like site assignments, potlucks etc are always added here. We started doing that so we wouldn't have to scroll thru hundreds of posts to find info, it's much easier to go to the beginning...

all sites are large enough for any trailer.
Note site 23 is the smallest with a Trailer limit of 28ft and a driveway length of 38ft. Most driveway lengths are 50+ feet

so we aren't all trying for the same site those who plan on going post what site you are planning on getting.

That would have put you logging in 8 minutes early. By the time you logged back in, the CG will probably be completely booked up for a holiday weekend.

I'll try to go in and book a couple sites (if I'm home). We aren't going to this camp-out but if I can grab a couple sites for someone else, I'm happy to do it. What sites do you want me to try for?

only do it if you think we will end up with a waiting list etc I'd hate for you to get stuck with cancellation fees.

I have a Mac and all this site had was info for windows so I guess I can't use this to check on the clock?
Also last time I tried to get in a CG with Reserve America I didn't make it so let me get the rules straight....... I can log in find the site I want put in all the info wait till 8 A.M. then push "Book this Site" Is this correct?

yes log in...then go "park name" type san onofre SB enter then below that enter the start date and # of nights   then search. it will come up and then click on "see details" you should see a page with San Onofre SB and a campsite list starting with site number 002

under the campground name are tabs that say campgound detail, campground map, campground list (the page you are on now)

click on campgound map

you will see a little map of the campground, just above that is a pull down menu that say san onfre SB (full campground) pull down that menu and select "San Mateo sites 51-67 (some of you will select a different range of sites) and a map of the sites in that section show up.

click on the little RV picture for your site number it will bring up a page about that site double check your dates and number of nights

ALL THE ABOVE NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE 8am

as soon as it's 8am click on book these dates and fill in the info. have your CC ready you only have about 15 minutes to complete it or it goes back up for sale

they mean FOR arrivals in September and they state the 1st-30th because it's 7 months advance but NOT to the day.. the entire month of Sept goes on sale.

in the way back olden days when reserve america first started it was 7 months to the day so if you want to go Sept 15th you would CALL on March 15th..


personally I think that way worked MUCH better....it spread out the number of people calling, but from a business standpoint. they bring a whole bunch of people in one day a month and have a small number the rest of the month

Oh my Goodness I just went on Reserve America site and found they are down for service to better serve us......Hope they wake up by 8 A.M. With your campground fee you can drive over (about 2 mi.) to San Clemente beach and park in their day use parking for free as long as you are displaying the San Mateo cg tag on your car window

all sites are large enough for any trailer.
Note site 23 is the smallest with a Trailer limit of 28ft and a driveway length of 38ft. Most driveway lengths are 50+ feet

so we aren't all trying for the same site those who plan on going post what site you are planning on getting.

I got site 65 what a morning I didn't have any bars on my internet so 12 minutes to go had to run down to our daughters house with computer in hand then I thought I lost my site but it was just nerves........With the help of my son-in-law and laughing grand-children the site was reserved.
Lori I've wouldn't say I had it better there are lots of us gimps out there and last time we did this I lost the handicap site plus couldn't get into any others.......

I didn't get in either--I got my site and then when I was logging in I got thrown off and my site was gone.  I keep on checking back to see if it is still in the 15 minute hold, but it doesn't look good....boo hoo!

Lori and I are camping at San Onofre again on 9/17 - Thursday and leaving on Sunday the 20th if anyone wants to join us you probably need to book it now.

Hopefully wavery tried to get a couple of sites for those who got jumped and bumped. i tried to get an extra site on the next street over just in case and was beaten out by someone else too.

have about 5 mnute left  we are not going but if someone else wants to go

I couldn't use that site on my Mac but our son-in-law has a atomic wrist watch and he was counting down the seconds for me.......Oh my goodness my hands were really shaking......this is way to much pressure for me.......(I did see however that the clock on my computer was right on....good to know!)

This maybe a little far for us and its not to long after our big trip to the Smithwood Rally, we will have to wait and see as it gets closer. Maybe put us on the waiting list...again..:) and we will watch.

dieter isn't going on this trip and honestly since it's not winter and only 2 nites everyone can bring a bundle of firewood. when we went to smithswood most people extened their trip which ment more stuff they had to pack and we needed it for 4 nites! I actually hauled back what was left over

Looks like I'll be bringing Shayda (6) a little friend (Mackenzie 2) and (Braxton 7).  I will also have 4 ladies (my classroom assistants) camping with me.  We have two sites, so hopefully we can spread out the tents.  The boys will all be at a Boy Scout event....

It will be a no stress, no cooking weekend.  I will bring donuts and orange juice(mimosas) for breakfast, and crock pot sausages for dinner.

I am hoping to spend the day at San Clemente and relax on the beach...FUN!  Relax! and friends!!

I installed an additional trans cooler to our truck and changed over to synthetic trans fluid this weekend. It sure would have been cheaper to get a motel (did I ever tell you that I [COLOR="Red"]hate[/COLOR] motels?). That darn transmission took 10 qts of oil @ $8 per qt.

We'll pray that the hurricane, that is in Mexico now, dissipates. There is a chance that it could get this far North. It's one big, nasty hurricane at the moment.

So far, so good......I'm not excited about the the towing power but the gas mileage is better than expected.

The weight in the truck bed (camper shell, loaded built-in lockers, bed-slide) causes a bit of sag in the rear (probably 550#) while towing. The WDH takes care of that but I would prefer not to use it, if I can get away without it. Plus, that's an additional 60# on the hitch. I'm thinking about air-bags and possibly a 3.42 ring & pinion.

I also don't care for the fact that the WDH increases the weight on the trailer axle. That puts my trailer axle weight on or slightly over the tire weight rating.

I love the bed-slide. It totally eliminates the need for crawling into the back of the truck. The side cabinets are absolutely perfect for storing and organizing the camping and trailer maintenance gear. It gives PopUping a whole new dimension to us.

Wish I would have read this about an hour ago. I just ordered a set of "Air-Lifts".......$191 (Incl S&H).

They're easy to install. I installed them on my S10 in about an hour. They worked great on lifting the back of the S10 but that didn't help the weight transfer off of the front wheels while towing. I had to go to the WDH anyway. I hate that thing. It weighs 3X as much as my generator and it's just another step that I have to do. I'm trying to eliminate steps here. That's why I bought the bigger truck in the 1st place.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used WDH (incl a new, never used, sway control)??????. I think I only used it 3 times.

I sure wish that I would have been able to take you up on this. I just finished installing the air bags on our Chevy Silverado P/U. It was not a fun job. It took me twice as long as it did for the installation of the same product on our Chevy S10.

Drilling through that big truck frame is a lot harder and right where the bolts had to go for the upper bracket mounting plate, the frame is double thickness and 2 of the bolt holes were right on a weld.

I sure as heck wouldn't do that install for $100.

The good news is, I can now get rid of that WDH. I don't like that thing. It was just a big hassle and that hitch weighs a ton.

We had air bags installed on our Ram and they are fantastic.  Not sure what brand (cuz I am a girl:D) but I do know they have a 10,000 lb load rating.

Me too Jacqui we have them on our truck don't know what they or who they are made by but I do know they work great.........:D

They just bolt on to our 2004 dodge ram.  No drilling required.
