Title: Visiting Pigeon Forge Area
Post by: centex_popup on Feb 11, 2009, 06:29 PM
Hi everyone,

I am planning a big trip across country this summer with my wife and kids.  We are traveling from Texas to Pigeon Forge TN and then on to DC.  Can anyone suggest a good campground around the Pigeon Forge area?

We will be taking our 2001 Coleman Niagara, its our first time to take it out of state.

We travel to pigeon forge quite often, we stay in an area called Wears Valley. We just purchased our first pop up so we intend on staying in it from now on.  My parents always stay in Townesend, Tn. with their camper.  They love the campgrounds and people.  He's a  minister and has always thought this area to be most family oriented compared to others in PF or Gburg.  Townesend is about 15 minutes to Pigeon Forge and the mountains.  The campgrounds lay along a lovely creek where  you can tube or play.  I think it's enjoyable.  Last summer we seen a bear while on our motorcycle right outside of Townsend, so good luck!

Title: Cumberland Gap

If you are going to be in that area and want a little quiet the campground at the Cumberland Gap is very nice. They have nice clean heated bathrooms and electric at 41 of the 160 sites. My wife and I went there a couple of years ago and are going back there in about 3 weeks for a few days. I'll try to let you know if it's still as good as it was. There is also some good hiking close by. The Appalachian Trail runs through the area and is sort of neat to hike on. You can meet folks that are hiking the whole trail. It's not a very touristy area like Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge if you aren't into large crowds and traffic jams. I have had it take up to almost two hours to get through Gatlinburg on a busy summer day.

We camped in the Smoky Mountains a couple years ago, and really loved it.  We stayed in the park though, up in Smokemont Campground.  It was nice being close to Cherokee.  It's much quieter on the North Carolina side!  :)

We almost always stay in Townsend.  We like the Tremont Campground that is just before the park entrance.  They are a little expensive but we have found that it is worth it.

Title: Pigeon Forge

We have stayed inside Pigeon Forge along the Little Pigeon River at these two campgrounds - Riversedge and Twin Mountain.  Both are right next to each other.  Great bathouse.  The sites are right next to each other.  This is not camping in the woods.  What I call city camping.  Since we were out all day doing the tourist stuff didn't really  matter to us.  Nearby all attractions.  Have fun - great place to go.

We love staying near Pigeon Forge in Sevierville at riverside RV Park and Resort. Full hook up is around $28/ day. We usually stay close to the pool. Sunday mornings you awake to the sounds of gospel music by the old time pavillion where they have church services. The camp ground sits along a creek. It is far enough away to be quiet but still close enough for all the fun in the Gatlinburg area.
