Title: Custer
Post by: kacee on Jun 02, 2009, 10:57 AM
Hi all, read an old thread about Custer State Park and know to avoid the big Harley rally, but does anyone have any recommendations about WHICH campground in this huge state park is most popup friendly? We want electricity, and I like a modern bath house/shower, but we try to avoid "parking lot" sites. (I know, I am picky!) Thanks for any help!

A really nice campground if you like 'restfull' is Big Pine Campground just outside of Custer.  It winds up the hills through pine trees, has full hook up if you want and flush toilets and a bath house, and prices are reasonable.  We really love it!

We stayed three nights at Custer in June 2008 in the Stockaid North campground.

It was really nice.  Big sites, lots of space.  Big trees.  The shower building and flush toilets were near the front.  There are pit toilets throughout, and they are very nice.  They actually smell like cinnamon!  I think we were in site 23E.  It was a hilly spot with the fire pit down below the camping pad.  Power was available.  We hiked back into the woods behind our site, down to a small lake.  It was great!  Here's a couple shots of the site:

Thanks for the replies, will check them out! And thanks for the photos ... you have a beautiful truck and camper and such a neat campsite! I'll have to show it to my husband ("look honey, no pop or beer cans left on the picnic table!").

We completely enjoyed our stay at Custer a few years back. We stayed at the Game Lodge campground I think it was called. I don't remember if it had electricity.

Thanks again. I found a compendium of sorts at scenicdakota.com which highly recommends a private campground called Custer Mountain, but we do usually prefer the state park campgrounds.  I'll post after our trip!
