Thanks for the heads-up. Did not realize how bad this practice was (is) and will definitely have to check out all my tires.
How times have chaged. I remember days of never buying new tires, but either buying used tires or retread truck tires.

Back then, vehicles weren't so fine-tuned that loosing the tread on a tire resulted in massive swerving or rollovers.
I don't think this is a big problem, since they had to look for old tires. But the fact that they found old tires, sometimes
very old tires, says it is wise to check the date code when you are buying.
I wonder, though, if this says something about the validity of trying to protect tires from UV light. We don't know how the failed tires were stored, but most tire places don't store their inventory outdoors where it is exposed to sunlight. They failed anyway.
