Title: Doheny Rally-June 2010
Post by: wavery on Nov 10, 2009, 02:19 PM
We are going to try for a Beach-Front campsite at Doheny SB
http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/Doheny_Sb/r/campsiteSearch.do?site=all&type=9&minimal=no&search=site&criteria=new&contractCode=CA&parkId=120025&search=site
for June 24-27, 2010

Please join-in on the fun if you can. This is a totally "Self-Service" rally with no-hook-ups.
I will update Post #1 as needed.
Doheny is a very popular CG and June is the most popular month. Reservations must be made through ReserveAmerica (above) and the fun commences on December 1, 2009 @ 8:00:00.01AM.

You can find pics of each site here:
http://campsitephotos.com/campground/Doheny-State-Beach

We are going to try for the South/East-end of the beach first. I might suggest that we try to fill from South to North, to try to keep the group together. Here is a list of people that are interested and the site(s) that they will try for 1st.

Everyone can, of course, do as they wish but to better try to organize our efforts and try to capture as many Beach-front sites as possible, I would ask that each member choose 1 Beach front site and 1 "across the road" site. If you are able to capture both sites, another member will be happy to buy your extra site from you. There will be some that won't be successful reserving any site.
Remember.......in order to obtain a reservation, you must be "SIGNED IN" before 8:00AM (preferably around 7:45), have your computer set to "Atomic Time" http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/ (at least one hour before)

Post by: wavery on Nov 10, 2009, 05:56 PM
IMHO.....it's best to name 2 sites, one on each side of the road. That way if you don't get your 1st choice, your 2nd choice is clear and we won't be competing helter-skelter for the same sites and leaving others grab the good ones.

If you don't get a beach-front site on your 1st attempt, I wouldn't waste time trying for a different beach-front site. They are all gone in the 1st 10 seconds. Your time would be better spent, grabbing a site on the other side of the road while others are still trying to find beach-front sites.

I think that if we are organized about this, we may pull off a nice rally. It's too bad that someone doesn't develop "Sniping" software for camp-sites........HMMMMMMMMM!!!!! There could be some $ to be made here.....don't tell anyone that I said that....:D

If you happen to get both sites.....that's great!!!!! someone will get none and want your extra one.

Good point Malena.......although it is technically East (on a South facing shore) most people in CA refer to anything "Down the coast", toward Mexico as "South". If I would have said "East" it may have messed a lot more people up..........but I did think about it.

If you think this is bad, when we were going through the Panama Canal on our boat, we always thought of going East to West. In reality, the Panama Canal goes North & South...... :D

Thanks for joining us. I have you down for 87-84.:D

For those of you that are considering sites 91, 92, 93 or 94.............

Those sites may be prone to "High-Tide flooding" when high tide exceeds 6'. If the weather is calm, it may not be an issue because highest, high tide that weekend is 6.17'. If there is any wind from the South, those sites may flood.

********24 June 2010 - 26 June 2010 Tide Predictions******
33.4167ø N, 117.6167ø W

2010-06-24  02:54 PDT  -0.84 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-24  09:21 PDT   3.57 feet  High Tide
2010-06-24  13:55 PDT   2.08 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-24  20:11 PDT   6.17 feet  High Tide
2010-06-25  03:33 PDT  -0.95 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-25  10:00 PDT   3.66 feet  High Tide
2010-06-25  14:38 PDT   2.09 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-25  20:50 PDT   6.14 feet  High Tide
2010-06-26  04:09 PDT  -0.93 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-26  10:35 PDT   3.72 feet  High Tide
2010-06-26  15:17 PDT   2.08 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-26  21:27 PDT   6.02 feet  High Tide

As a comparison, here is 1 week prior:

17 June 2010 - 19 June 2010
33.4167ø N, 117.6167ø W

2010-06-17  00:40 PDT   5.06 feet  High Tide
2010-06-17  07:45 PDT  -0.27 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-17  14:31 PDT   4.38 feet  High Tide
2010-06-17  20:14 PDT   1.98 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-18  01:49 PDT   4.33 feet  High Tide
2010-06-18  08:35 PDT   0.26 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-18  15:26 PDT   4.71 feet  High Tide
2010-06-18  21:45 PDT   1.67 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-19  03:12 PDT   3.67 feet  High Tide
2010-06-19  09:28 PDT   0.79 feet  Low Tide
2010-06-19  16:20 PDT   5.07 feet  High Tide
2010-06-19  23:12 PDT   1.12 feet  Low Tide

All of the other sites should be OK up to 6.6' or a storm blowing from the South. Dieter got flooded in one of those site last time but I think it was a 6.6' tide (don't hold me to that)..

Wayne,

Are you considering moving it up to the weekend before?  We could make the weekend of June 18-20.

I don't have a problem with either weekend. However, no matter what weekend we choose, it may be inconvenient for someone. There may be school issues earlier....That's why I picked that weekend.

If you want to PM each person that has already signed up and ask if a date change is OK with them.....I'm cool with it . It would need to be unanimous and would be easier today than it will tomorrow......:D

Malena.....see the map in the 1st post. Just keep in mind that, for some reason, they published the map upside down.....:p

If you go "South" (by the compass).....you end up in the ocean.

I suggest that when you get there.....stick to the roads and ignore your compass and you may be OK.........:p

Check out the pics of those sites (see post 1). I think that 77 is a real long skinny site. I don't know if that is good or bad though. If I were you, I would try for 75 1st. On the other hand, there may not be much demand for 77 and it may be easier to get.....;)

I'm running out of time to play. It was on my agenda to get this working before December 1st. There is a macro firefox extension called imacros. I've played with it enough to know that it can be set up to bypass the login and form filling foolishness that reserve america tries to get you to fill in every time. This thing also does have a sense of time.

I thought it would be a simple (ha!) exercise to put two and two together and make something that goes through a list of sites at 08:00:01 for the appointed day until it grabs
two sites. It's wednesday at 3:30 and I'm still working on work- (shh- I'm not here posting this right now) and haven't gotten around to trying anything. Perhaps some web-savvy someone out there will prove it's a piece of cake and give SCCampers state park site domination!

Crank up firefox and stuff in imacros as an add in and see what happens...

For those of you that have a ReserveAmerica account and have booked reservations at Doheny before, I have a quick and easy way to get in for your reservations tomorrow morning.

At 7:45AM Go Here.... https://www.reserveamerica.com/memberSignInDisplay.do?topTabIndex=MyAccount

That's the sign-in pg. Put in your name & password ..click "Sign IN"

Click on "Past Reservations"

Find your last Doheny Reservation and click on "Doheny SB"
That will take you right to the Doheny page.

Put in your "Site #" Put in both numbers with a comma between them.

Put in "Arrival Date" (click on the blank box > click on the down arrow by the date > Click on June 2010 > Click on June 24 or whatever date you will arrive on.

Got to "Length of Stay:" and enter the number of days.......

WAIT UNTIL 8:00:00.1 and click on "Search Campsites"

Which ever one shows "Available" click on "See Details" > "Book These Dates"

The reason that I am posting all this is because we did a dry run this evening and we could not get the Doheny CG to come up.....I fooled around and found that this way works and it was the ONLY way that I could get to the Doheny page for some reason.

GOOD HUNTING...............:sombraro:

One thing about having this ultra-fast Internet connection at work and multiple computers to use to try to book sites......

If you don't make it to work until after 8am you get skunked.

Dang freeway traffic. Left 20 minutes earlier than normal and got to work 30 minutes later than I usually do. Oh, well.

This may be a silly question, but does anyone have an extra site that they don't need or are looking to sell?  I noticed that is a waiting list already for this very popular campground.  With our new trailer, I am concerned that it may be too big (long) for the site.
We currently have site 71 with a max vehicle lenght of 20ft and our new baby is 25ft and change.
Should I try and call the campground and see if we can still fit in there?

Thank you to anyone who can help, and thanks to everyone for reading this.

I think that 20' is the distance from the street to the concrete stop. Check out the pic here:
http://campsitephotos.com/campground/Doheny-State-Beach

If you call the CG they will tell you, "NO". They are strict on trailer lengths, "IF you ask". If you are 20' or under from the rear of your tires to the end of the trailer tongue, I'd think that you'd be OK......just don't hold me to it.

Thanks Wayne.  I will measure it tomorrow or at least before we get there.  We pick it up tomorrow from the dealer.  They are detailing it and they are also setting up the WDH with sway, wich I think might be overkill but it was only a few more bucks for the sway control so more security I suppose.

I don't think that I would tow that trailer without a WDH and sway control. I think that you may find it very different from towing your PU. I would never tow a full size TT without sway control.

I think that if you look at your true weights carefully, you may find that you are close to maxed out with that 1/2 ton PU. I know that I am and our fully loaded trailer is only 4,000#. My guess is that your tongue weight will be over 600# on that trailer. A WDH is a must IMHO.

ANYWAYYYY..........we are in site 64 and the max length for that site is 17'. We are 24' open and I'm not concerned................at least not until they kick us out.....

Congratulations on the new trailer.  Site 71 is a fairly small site so you may have a problem fitting it in.  Our boat is at the marina in Dana Point so if I get back down there in the next couple of weeks I will try and get a look at that site again.

Did you trade in the pop-up or are you going to sell it?

I agree Wayne on the WDH  part.  I would never tow anything that large without it.  I am questioning the way a bit but I have used a 3/4 ton in the past when I was much younger and borrowed from my father with no problems.  I think we are at the limit with this unit as well.  Had a smaller one in mind, but when we saw this one, it was all over.  I tried to stay under 25ft and 5,000lbs dry with 500lbs tongue and it just barely qualifies.

Rich we do plan to sell our very used pup.  We did not trade it in.  We need to get our stuff out of it and clean it a bit too.  Want to get it onto Craig's List by the Holiday weekend.  That would be great if you could go by and check out #71 for us.  I looked at the pics of the site and it looks small indeed.  We were not planning for our upgrade at the time of reservations and just wanted to join in on the fun.

Don't kid yourself John, you will have a tongue weight in access of 600#....trust me. "Dry weight" means little. When you actually weigh the tongue (fully loaded for camping) prepare yourself for a shock. Although, with a WDH, I think you are OK to 750# (check your manual, or it may say right on the hitch). My bet is, that trailer loaded will go over 6,000#. Dry weight does not include any accessories. The trailer is usually about 500# over dry weight when it lease the lot (empty).

I'm not sure if Jim has weighed his trailer or not. His is about the same size as yours. He has a HD 3/4T Dodge Ram so he may not have.

Just a thought.  When Pete & Linda sold their pop up on Craig's list, Pete set the table with flowers and two wine glasses and a bottle of wine.  He sold it super fast and credits that pix for many of the inquiries as well as the final purchase.  (Pete says it's because all of the wives found the romance appealing; I'd have to agree...though I like to think that at least some of the husbands were sold by that as well...what can I say - it's the romantic in me!)
:p

Happy selling!!!!!!!!!!

Post by: JohnandLeann on May 09, 2010, 12:35 AM
We are seriously considering dropping out from this rally unfortunately.  Our new trailer is going to be too much for the site that we have.  We did not get our first choice in the feeding frenzie that was the opening day for reseervations and had to settle for a smaller second choice spot.

Will wait till the last minute to cancel our site.

Does anyone want site 71?  Max drive lenght is 20ft.

Hey John and Leanne, congrats on your new TT, your going to the other side I see, I will talk to my wife and see if shes up for going, dont want to cut in front of the line of the waiting list, In case you dont remember we were the ones that took your extra site on the last dohney trip last year, as luck would have it I'm staying at new port dunes the week before with boy scouts but were staying on the group sites in tents, I'm dont like sleeping on the ground starting to get old I guess,  take care Rob & Leanne.

I don't think that Dee or Hoagie will fit in that site. In fairness, I just sent Hatlet a PM......If they aren't interested, the site is yours (if Dee & Hoagie don't want it either) if John and Leanne cancel.

I put your name on the waiting list. What size is your trailer?

We have a 12' Jayco pop-up, folds out to about 24, I think it should be fine as we can turn it side ways or even fit fine with the back tires up to the end of the pad.  I of course would be at the back of the line in the waiting list and will check with my wife but am sure she is always ready to go, thanks for the reply, Rob.

With the addition of the storage box on the rear bumper we are about 24' ball-to-bumper and 27'3" opened up. So we won't fit either. Bummer for us.

Hatley has bowed out due to other plans.....:(

Before you bow-out Dee and Brian, consider this. The limiting factor in site #71 may be the concrete tire stopping block. I believe that it's 20' from the street.

My site has a 17' max trailer length (the block is 17' from the street). We are 24' open. However, the distance from the rear of our tires to the very end of our trailer (fully open) is 15'. We have a 9' overhang, rear of the trailer tires.

You may want to check out the picture of site #71 here:
http://campsitephotos.com/campground/Doheny-State-Beach

It may be worthwhile to take a drive down and check it out, if you really want to come.

I am taking into consideration your suggestion about the rear overhang and the limiting factor of the rear axle tire against the concrete bumper.  I just cant tell from that picture they have provided if the fire ring is too close to the trailer or not.  Guess I should have measured the distance from the rear axle tire to the hitch ball first.

Perhaps the spelling police should check their grammar before posting:

Quote from: wavery;217818This thread is dying a natural death.......no point in putting it out of it's misery.....:sombraro:

"It's" is a contraction for "it is" so the correct word should have been "its."

"Your" should have been "you're," a contraction for "you are."

You might want to "Sign up" on PUX with the same user name and password that you use on this site. It will make it easier for you to use and easier for us to know who you are.

There's already a Malena on PUX

AHHHHH! but I think thou may have misunderstood the intent of the post....oh "Wise One".

In this case........ "it's" is also a contraction of "it has"......thus......."it" (referring to the thread) "has" misery........:p

Don't mess with me.......I know a good lawyer that is really good at twisting words........:sombraro:

Nice try. "It's" (apostrophe "s") is always a contraction for the word "it" plus a form of the verb "to be," whether present or past tense. Therefore, if "it's" were being used as a contraction for "it has" with "has" being the past tense form of the verb "to be," "it's" should've been followed by the word "been," as in "It's been misery." But if "its" is being used in its possessive form, as in it possesses or is full of or "has" misery, it's still "its" (no apostrophe). (See what I did there?)

Dude, I'm an English major and know this stuff cold. I conjugate verbs and diagram sentences in my spare time for fun and profit. I cry tears of joy when Griffin correctly differentiates between "good" versus "well" and uses adverbs appropriately. You're better off to admit defeat on this one and get on with camping. :D:-();) :p :eyecrazy:

Just a reminder - check in time is strictly enforced at Doheny - 2 pm - no early check in - you will be waiting in the parking lot until 2 pm.

What???????? You haven't figured that one out yet!!!!!

I'm disappointed in you Dave.:p

When they tell us, "Go park over there until 2:00". We sheepishly pull into the lot, wait 5 minutes then drive to the campsite. It's worked up 'till now.....:D

Anyway, we will be there tomorrow around 4:PM, so we won't be able to test it out........

The next trick is to see if they let me in with a 24' camper to put in a 17' camp-site.........:yikes:

Hey just a quick note to update you on the pot luck, for saturday night my wife will be doing a pasta salad and we will do some kind of chicken dish in the DO, I'm not sure about saturday morning yet, I'm waiting to see if I can get my family up and running early saturday morning.  Sorry for the late notice I have not been able to get on line for the past couple of weeks.  We look forward to meeting and seeing everyone this weekend.

Wayne,
Thanks so much for organizing a great rally!!! The kids had a blast and so did Gerry and I!!!!  And I don't think we'll EVER forgot the near Tsunami:yikes:  especially poor Isabel.

It was great visiting with all of our Scamper buddies and meeting some new Scampers.  And Danny and Isabel had a blast with Hannah.  So now Carol and Jim, I'll be bugging you to bring her again as well!

Okay...now I've got to get some work done.  I just hate Mondays...especially the Monday after a fun Scamper rally.  Just that much harder to get in gear. :morning:

Bye bye for now,
Malena

P.S.  This weekend I'll hunker down and figure out how to post the cool pixes we took!!

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for a great weekend and alowing us to tag along.  We had a great time and appreciated the warm welcome.  The pot luck was great and followed by a nice camp fire and Tsunami, what more can we ask for.  I'm not sure if spike's favorite squeek toy is going to make it thru the wash.  It looks like the group is moving to another site will try and set up an account I guess at pux?  We look forward to another outing with you thanks again.

Toby.

as a side note:

Site #64 is listed in ReserveAmerica as a 17' site. It is actually 35' from the the concrete tire stop to the road. I put my 24' trailer in there with my extremely long P/U truck in front of it and had room to spare. It also had another parking space for a 2nd vehicle that is 20' long.

My point is, if you want a really nice beach front site at Doheny, try for #64. It's always one of the last (beach front) sites to book because it's listed as a 17' max. trailer length site.
