Wife and I can t decide which to buy.  Some friends have had some bad luck with both brands.  Which cooler do have, size and why?

The OvermansWe have 2 of the Coleman Extreme coolers and really think they re great. For long trips, we use one for frozen food and the other for drinks and fresh food.

The OvermansWe have a Coleman and our son has an Igloo.  We took both with us one trip and tried to fill them with the same amount of food and ice.  Both seemed to do equally well.  couldn t tell the difference.

The OvermansWe also have one of each. The Igloos latch was a problem, it would not stay latched after a season of use. We just adjusted it and it is now staying closed.
Both seem to hold ice about the same, now that the latch is staying closed.

We used them both during the blackout. We emptied the Coleman and left what ice was left in the Igloo. The ice is still there today(block ice), so 4 days and holding.....I ll let you know when its melted.....

The OvermansI have 2 Igloo and 1 Coleman.  They both do a good job.  I like the lid of the Igloo better.  You can have stuff sticking above the rim of the cooler and still close it.  The lid to the Coleman is flat and you can t have anything above the rim and still close the lid.

The OvermansI have the Igloo and have no complaints.  Tlhdoc is right. The lid design allows stuff to stick up over the rim of the cooler and still get the top closed.  Igloo also makes a 5-day cooler in a compact size.

The OvermansThe results are in...the ice in the Igloo finally all melted yesterday. Not to bad considering we never drained the water out of it...for a total of 6 days, 3 of them holding nothing but the ice that was left (which wasn t much)

Turn Key

The OvermansHave the big (50+ qts.) Coleman " Extreme" , w/wheels.  Have read and heard that the Igloo version works just as well.

The OvermansWe have an Extreme and it does great by us.  I put a reflective blanket over it on hot days and the ice really does last in all but the hottest stretches of weather on longer camping trips.  After this Labor Day trip, the remaining food was still partially frozen.

The OvermansI have the 50 qt. + Coleman, too.  I have always packed this using a couple of 2 ltr. bottles with ice and bagged ice; as well as having everything pre-cooled and/or frozen.  I still found that on long trips I was adding ice (although not with great frequency).  Just before Labor Day, someone in the local paper had written that they freeze a block of ice for the bottom of the cooler using a 9 x 13 aluminum cake pan.  Hmmm....sounded like a good idea so I tried it.  Placed this ice in the bottom and used one 2 ltr bottle and 1 bag of ice.  Temps all week-end were near 90.  I added NO ice in 4 days, and still had a nice cold cooler.  Definitely worth it, in my book.

The OvermansWe used one of each on our last trip to Florida.  I don t know if the Igloo has just gotten old or what (it used to work great), but the Coleman outperformed it on that particular trip.
