I found a 7qt Pre seasoned "Lodge House" Dutch oven on sale at a local store on sale for $29.   I have some questions to the DO group.
Is this a good brand?
Is this a good price?
Is "Pre seasoned" the way to go with DO?

Hey Rod!

I know the name Lodge, but not Lodge House. I don't know if it's Lodge's formal name, or possibly a less expensive brand within the Lodge brand, or a competitor trying to benefit from Lodge's reputation. My spideysense tells me it's the latter, rather than the former, since we're talking about a 7 qt. size for a very inexpensive price, and IIRC, preseasoned pans usually cost a bit more than unseasoned.

Personally, I buy only Lodge, and I actually enjoy seasoning my own DOs at home in the oven (think Apocalypse Now: "I love the smell of Crisco in the morning! It smells like victory!") Having said that, even if this DO isn't a true Lodge brand, if you check the way the lid fits and it's a good seal, it may still be a good buy. Worse case scenario--if it cracks, you're only out $29.00.  I would also check with Moose--he's the DO King!!

If it's a Lodge, they are only selling pre-seasoned dutch ovens now. Seems like a good price and I agree with Lori, that they make the best ovens.Moose

I don't believe it is a true Lodge. I tried to find "Lodge House" at the Lodgemfg.com website, with no luck. I also did an internet search, without much luck. I believe that if it were a subsidy of Lodge, then you would be able to find Lodge House on their website pretty easily.

That said, I still agree with Griffsmom. You might only be out $29 if it cracks, but the true worst case scenario is burnt/unevenly cooked food!

All of my Lodge cast iron ware is made in the USA. So far as I know it still is,  made in Tennessee.  This Lodge House sure would be suspect to me if I see a made in China mark anywhere on it. One time I bought a cast iron skillet that was made in China while out on a camping trip. It promptly cracked on me whereas my Lodge ware has been doing faithful service for years.
