In the search for easy cooking solutions to Potluck meals at rallys, I have tried simply driving to a the local stores at the last minute, simple pots and pans, a crock pot, using my grill, a regular Dutch Oven, and now......   The Ultimate Dutch Oven !

The Ultimate Dutch Oven, or (UDO14 by Camp Chef), is a 9.5 quart Dutch Oven with a convection cone molded into the metal right in the middle.  The cone produces a convection-cooking effect.  It also allows you to smoke meats in the DO.  It's been called the "Outdoor Microwave" because of it's speed and versatility.

I was a little skeptical at first because a regular Dutch Oven is tightly sealed when the lid is on.  Alot of DO recipes seem to rely on the fact that the lid makes a tight seal with the pan.

To test the UDO14, I tried a rice recipe.  I figured if it can cook rice properly without burning, drying, or making a giant burnt hockey puck, then it would be OK.  So I attempted Cuban Style Chicken and Yellow Rice, (Arroz con Pollo) .  I used Kingsford charcoal without using an indoor oven or a stove burner to see if I could pull off this recipe at a future campsite rally potluck.  I used the UDO14 lid to brown the chicken and prepare the broth.

All went well!  This is the real deal folks!  It cooks evenly, and it's faster than a regular Dutch Oven.  Besides having to make two batches of charcoal to keep feeding the UDO14 during the frying, simmering, and "baking" processes for this recipe, it was virtually effortless, especially during the 20 minute "baking".

My kids are looking forward to me attempting some Bundt-style cakes, as this Dutch Oven is designed to make them!! :p

If I didn't know better, I'd say "You must work for Camp Chef."  Every word of that sounded like ad copy.  Had that been your first post, I'd have reported you.  :p

A quick search at IDOS showed that there was a brief discussion about this DO a couple years ago on the IDOS forum.

Moose,

You are the inspiration for my Dutch Oven collection!  At Vail Lake in 2005 my family and I LOVED the Beef Stew you prepared in your DO for the dinner potluck!  Until that time I had not had Dutch Oven cooking since I was a Boy Scout over twenty years earlier.  You make it look so easy, and your food is delicious!!

In January I found my 1st DO, a 14" Lodge on clearance at Sports Authority for $4.00.  About two months ago I found a new Lodge Boy Scout Insignia DO/Frypan set on Ebay.... I paid more for the shipping to get it to my house!  And most recently, the Ultimate DO.  I have 3 Dutch ovens now!! :p
