Ok, I think I found a good place to hold the Winter Rally.

Big Sur Campgrounds and Cabins.  Talked to the manager, Rick, today and he is very interested in hosting us.  I said we would need 25 to 30 sites and he was fine with that.  Cool thing is that we would be taking up just about the entire park.  Their regular rate is $27 per night and $4.00 for hook-ups.  They will waive the hook up fee.  The price is for two people per site, additional fee is $4.00 per day extra for anyone over 4 years old.  Still not a bad rate.  Deposit is first nights fee and can be individually mailed to the campground.  If this works for everyone, I will call back and make the reseravaiton and get the cutoff date for the deposit.

Yikes,
that s an additional $12 a night for us, making it $39 a night[: (][>:][:@]

We camped in the adjacent Riverside Campground a few years ago, and walked through this campground a few times, to use their playground, and store.
 It seemed O.K. nothing fancy,
Definetly in the redwoods, as I remember our eldest son looking for the one ray of sun shining through the trees, and kept moving his chair during the day, to sit in the ray of sunshine to keep warm[:D]

If they could do something on the price for the kids, we might be interested.
Sure would hate to have to leave a few of them at home[;)]

Brothers and Sisters, we have an emergancy! The Quigley s will be forced to give up camping due to the high cost of taking *all* their children. NNC is PROUD to announce the " Adopt a Quig"  program. Yes, you, and you-- and *you* too-- can help those stricken with mutliple mutiples of children. Dial 1-ADO-PTA-QUIG to find out how *YOU* can help these people continue to camp as they are acustomed. Operators are standing by.

It took a little doing, but the GSM s have managed to adopt one Quig.

Apparently Margaret s name was not on the " Adopt-a-Quig"  list, but we convinced the operator that she was adoptable, so we have adopted Margaret.

NickOk, since that campground was nixed by the Quiglys[8D]  How about this one:
 http://www.sugarbarge.com/index.html

$28 per night can get all sites together, price includes 4 people but she said if you have more than that you just put them under someone elses site.  They don t have fire pits at each site but you can bring your own or rent one for $5.00 a day.  Deposit is $100 for the group.

 Campers comments:
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the American River, South Fork, off Hwy 49 in Coloma CA (40 miles east of Sacramento). Old mining town from the gold rush days. Lots to see and do. River rafting is a big draw. Large clean, shaded sites, with an adequate store in town (walking distance). Very friendly staff. Old one-way bridge crosses the river to get to the resort. 35 ft. RV may be the limit. I highly recommend this campground.  2002`

Great location on the American river- only 8 miles off of US 50. On the plus side- The facilities were clean and well managed. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was a large grassy area away from the campsites to run your dog. On the negative side- the park was a little dusty- a bit more grass would have been nice. Some sites had low-hanging trees that were in need of trimming. All things considered- we will be back!  2002`

Nick

NickAnyone like any of these places?  I need to get a place reserved ASAP.

SactoCampers

 NickNick,

We ve walked through Coloma Resort while visiting Coloma. I d say it s okay, but not that great. I think this place would be more appropriate in the summer time, where people could wade in the water or go river rafting. In the winter time, there s not that much to do in Coloma except walk around the town, which doesn t take that long. Not that it matters with this group, since we all kind of hang out anyway. IIRC, the sites were rather small and short. Mrs. Sacto and I scratched this one off our list. It s the one you take the bridge across to get to, right? Also, most of the sites are right on the river s edge....which makes many a mom and dad nervous...particularly a swift-flowing one in the winter. The campground is also pretty narrow, so kids can get themselves into trouble even if they re in a site not on the water. (http://www.colomaresort.com)

Now, if Coloma is the place you want to be, there s a membership-only campground (Resorts of Distinction, Adventure Outdoor Resorts) that we ve looked at that is the best in the Coloma area. However, somebody would have to be a member (like Sal and Joan are with NACO/TT) in order to get in. (http://www.ponderosarv.com/)

We also drove through American River Resort in Coloma and were not at all impressed. Sites on the river were small, sites on the hill had too many grungy permanent residents.  (http://americanriverresort.com/). Didn t look well maintained, but then again, this was in late winter so perhaps things improve when camping season comes around....but then again, we re talking about camping there in the winter. The roads are dirt so there was lots of mud when we went there, which was a day or two after a storm came through.

If you recall, I considered these campgrounds last year when deciding on the location for the Gold Rush Rally, but did not receive ringing endorsements for any of them.

There s one other place that looks nice but we didn t drive through, called Camp Lotus, but they accept no dogs, no exceptions. So that s kind of a deal breaker with this group. (http://www.camplotus.com)

That Sugar Barge place looks kind of nice. But I know better now than to endorse a campground based on its website without having personally seen it (Snug Harbor). [;)][:D] If somebody can vouch for it, it might be a good place to go. The location is certainly good! [;)][:D]

NickI was just looking at our calendar and we can t make it to the Winter Rally[&:]  We have a Cub Scout Banquet on that Saturday and since I have many rolls in Cub Scouts I guess we better be there.

 I hope everyone has fun!

NickHere s another option: Shaver Lake

I don t know how cold it would be there in late February or whether there would be snow, but the site says that occasionally the lake freezes a little around the edges and yet, they accept reservations year-round.  If you liked this place, you could always move the rally into March or April to get warmer temps.

One other thing: Winter rates for Nov. 1 thru May 1 are only $24/night with up to 8 people per site for those of you who have too many kids. [;)]

For those who like to snow ski this would be a good option.  There is a ski area just a few miles away [link]http://www.sierrasummit.com/[/link].  Shaver Lake is over 5,000 feet in elevation so it could be quite cold during that time of the year.

Nick

NickThe problem is see with Shaver lake is the distance for the far northern folks.  Also that time of the year those of us with infants need to camp in areas that are a little warmer.

 NickO.K. Nick.
After reading Scott s article in PUT, you need to just pick a date and a campground, and we will show up.

Sorry for being the only one to comment on Big Sur, and it being a negative comment. We really love to camp in that area, and the cost is only a minor inconvience.
Wherever you chose is fine with us, (as long as we don t have to drive more than 3 hours)[;)]

I like that idea.  I have not recieved my copy of PUT yet.  Hope it comes today.

NickBig Sur Campground was where we took out trailer for her maiden voyage right after we picked her up in Morgan Hill.  It s a cool little campground, and there s a bar(very important), restaurant, gift shop, and mini market within walking distance.

I give this  Two thumbs up

NickSorry I can t make this rally since I ll be in Olema.
