I have seen little racks that you put on a grill, lean bread against it to make toast. Has anyone ever used one and do they work? Toast while camping would be nice sometimes.

We've used one.  It works, toast gets made.  It's not real great toast, but toast it is.  We've toasted bread and bagels in it.  They're not very expensive, you're not going to lose much if you don't like it.

They are pretty cheap this is true. I couldn't see spending anything though if it was terrible. Maybe I'll give one a try.

Thanks for the reply.

Wife and I have used one for years tent camping. We tried it on the low presure stove in the pup and it just didn't seem to work.Ended up out side on the camp stove. It works better on med-med high heat. Also not only will you need to flip the toast over but also end for end for an even browning. It does tend to really dry the toast out.

The racks you describe work best with a propane camp stove.  I have one in the popup but haven't used it for a long time.  They do work on the popup stove, but the heat produced can really warm up the camper. They are inexpensive, but rust very quickly.  As others have said, you can't be in a hurry, and must constantly be vigilant to turn and rotate the bread for an even toast.

I try not to forget to clean off the crumbs and I keep it in the Coleman cardboard box it came packaged in, but ours has not rusted at all after four years of use.  The Coleman version may be made from cheap 400 series stainless steel, which would explain the lack of rust.

The same toaster made by Coghlan's Ltd. apparently started their company many moons ago by copying the "U.S. Based" version. ;)

Thanks for the post beacher.DW and I were going to give one as a gift to some friends. A non rusting one sounds great. We may replace ours at the same time, and put the rusted one in an antique store and price it at say $35.00,LOL.
