Looking to buy a porta-potty for use in a shower tent outside our popup. What are some good ones to look at, or bad ones to stay away from? Thanks-Dan

For several years when tent camping, we used a Passport Potty we'd gotten at Wal-mart, and it served the purpose very well.  Was easy to maintain, dump and would last several days before needing to be emptied (depending upon usage).  At the time I purchased mine, it was under $50, but I understand they are about $70 at the present time.

I use a 5 gal. bucket with a toilet seat snapped on inside my Cabela's shower/outhouse. Cost of bucket = free; lid= $13 incl. shipping IIRC. We only use the bucket for late night whizzers. Serious business goes to the permanent facilities (since we boondock, that usually means a vault toilet of dubious technical merit).

Check out the PETT system.  It is expensive, but we found it to be the best for our needs and preferences.  No parts to break, tanks to empty, and readily storable.  We bought the whole system including the tent, but you can get just the potty portion seperate.

I posted a review in the products section of this site a while ago.

I would suggest a Thetford (the battery-operated electric flush model is the top of the line) or any potty that has a spout for emptying.  May be messy to empty otherwise.

The Wal-Mart one is very, very similar to the one we have.  I think that ours might be that one under a different name.  We have had no problems with ours as it came with our new to us pup.  We have really only used it for emergencies and for my 3 y/o who is still potty training and very particular about using "dirty" toilets (I'm talking if there is anything on it, even a bug, he will not use it...)  It is fairly easy to empty and DH actually dumped it in the dump station without a funnel (since I forgot to give it to him before he took off with it...)  May not have been the most plesnt thing, but he did it easily.  I have also dumped it in our home toilet at the end of a short trip.

The Walmart one is identical to the 6 gal Thetford that we had (I just threw it away this morning.

It worked perfectly for years. We used it at every camp-out (usually inside our shower tent) and it was easy to dump and clean.

If you use the appropriate chemicals (preferably liquid chemicals) it will have no odor and they are very sanitary. The powdered chemicals tend to not dissolve completely and end up hardening to the bottom of the holding tank. One way around that is to have a separate 1 gallon container to dissolve the powder in real good (by swishing it around) before putting it into the toilet holding tank.

I used to have a porta-potti with an emptying spout. The darn thing always leaked where the spout swiveled. I threw it away and got the Thetford because it didn't have a place in the tank that could leak.
