Title: Crayons?????
Post by: Gamecock Camper on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
The DW and I had the wonderful experience of meeting Barbara Bush, the former First Lady in Columbia last week.  She came to town to talk for the Lexington Medical Center Foundation at a fundraising event. ...... don t worry, I m not going to go political here, but I did want to share something she said that I thought was interesting....... I like analogies, and here is the one she shared... It went something like this:

People are like crayons.  They come in lots of different colors, some have names you can t pronounce, some are sharp while others are dull.  Every once in a while there is a new one and some are more fragile than others.  In someways it is magical how they all find a way to work together to make a complete set.

Gamecock CamperNeat analogy, and I see how it works for us here at PopUpTimes.   We re lucky, because we have many people of differing backgrounds here, and we have an opportunity learn about them through the posts they put up here on this board.   Sometimes we may see or hear something that clarifies things that we never understood about a particular race, religion or ethnic group.   But, in the real world, we rush past other people on the street without having a chance to know why they are doing the things they do, or thinking the things they think.   I m grateful for this site, and the fact that my eyes have been opened many times by some of the things I ve read from all of you here.   I hope that we can all remember that one of the reasons we all pay money to come here and learn about camping here, is because we are learning these things from people that we consider friends and trust.  I wonder if there are any of us that wouldn t have considered being friends with someone else here on the board if they had just met them by chance somewhere else?   I guess what I m saying is that if we can use our diversity here in such a good way, to color the world around us with brilliant and coordinating colors, maybe we could use what we learn here about tolerance and harmony to blend out in the world every day.

Gamecock CamperWell, if you carry the analogy further, there are always crayons in the box that you wonder why they made them, and...uh...never mind.[:D]

Does that mean we can peel you, turn you upside down, and rub your head on a picece of paper?  Maybe break you in half?  Then we can stick your head in a crayon sharpener and twist?[:D]

Finally, we ll leave you on the rug and trample you.[:D]

Or if you re lucky, we ll put you back in the box until the next time we want to color.[:D]

Gamecock CamperI guess that I forgot to mention that sometimes if you try to blend the wrong one, you end up with mud.

Gamecock CamperOur Rat Terrier has been eating my son s crayons.  When it s poop check time (to see if he had an accident), u can usually tell what color crayon he ate.  Also..think they re a laxative to him.  Son has finally learned to put them up high where the dawg cann t get at them.  So if I m a crayon...I m the one the dog got ahold of.

Gamecock CamperA long time ago, when my DDs were little, Crayola introduced Fluorescent crayons.  We had an Irish Setter that loved crayons and I told my girls that if they left their crayons laying around where the dog could get them, I would take away any that were left, and also their color books, for a week.  Well, one night I was getting ready to turn in, and went to turn off the patio light.  Lo and behold, there were little colorful glowing dots all over the back yard.  Really freaked me out.  (Keep in mind that this was in the early  70s)   The next day I went out and walked around and didn t find anything, so I chalked it up to  imagination .  That night it happened again, bright little dots all over the yard.   Finally it came out by accident that the dog had eaten those fluorescent cryons, and I was so relieved, that neither the kids nor the dog got punished for it.
BTW, my oldest DD always peeled the paper off the crayons.  She referred to it as " taking off their underwear" .

Gamecock Camperwell, if we are all crayons, I want to be the TURQUOISE one!  It is a nice cheerful color and has special meaning for Native Americans[:)]
