Well, this will be the first of many polls taken.
On the former (Snitz) board participants acquired a pop up icon depending on the number of posts they made. As I remember it:
51-99 posts: One Pop Up (Tan)
100-249 posts: Two Pop Ups (Blue)
250-499 posts: Three Pop Ups (Orange)
500-999 posts: Four Pop Ups (Red)
1000+ posts: Five Pop Up (Green)
This board does have the capibility of such a system. So, do we want the rating system back?
moderator1my thinking on this is that people sometimes feel intimidated about making their first post when they see that others have a lot of posts. And just indicating the date we joined is really enough information about how long we have been around or how active we have been. Seems like having no numbers and no icons gives us a more level playing field and takes away the emphasis from something which is really not at all important in the grand scheme of things.
Now having said that, if there are those who are in love with numbers and icons, I am NOT going to complain if our counting system is kept.
moderator1I say " yey" for the rating system.
I hope I won t be the only one, if I am , oh well, I won t complain if we don t keep it.

moderator1The PU rating did have some fun to it, but in respect it also did lead to some unecesary posts, of which YES I was guilty of also.[:)]
moderator1I thought the little popups you got underneath your name were actually quite cute. I wouldn t mind having something like that again, but on the other hand, having a rating system DOES encourage a lot of weird and goofy, one or two worded posts.
I guess it really does not matter to me. I will be happy with the forum one way or the other.
[:)][:)]
moderator1but ya know it was fun getting your first camper and then getting your next...i liked it myself....[:)]
moderator1I don t care one way or the other, I liked the little campers but can live without them.
for all you oldtimers rember the race for the stars and the strange and not very camping related post to get a star

moderator1It was fun on the old board and I wouldn t mind it here. If others are bothered by this I would rather err on the safe side so that all can be happy and comfortable here. It s just not that important and we all know who has the " busy fingers" any way[:D]!
moderator1I think they were abused on the last boards and would add no real value to the new boards.

moderator1 How about everyone get 1 little Pup up under their name(except for me, I get a little Aliner[;)]), just for being here with no additional ones added with the amount of posts?[;)]
moderator1I personally don t care either way, but I too know that some people did feel intimidated when they switched from " lurker" to " newbie" . I would hate for anyone to not feel comfortable getting started posting here, especially when they spent money to join this site.
Edit; In fact, just looking at this post I noticed " Charter Member" under my user name and a year from now that will be not given to new members I imagine. " Charter Member" and 12 " muffins" for example, could come off as a little too pretentious.
Well, looking over my post I guess I do have an opinion regarding muffins, lol.
moderator1Wow! Now " Charter Member" is missing from everyone in this thread! We are all " undefined" . My words turned into action I guess, ha!
Edit; Alright now! Who s messing around, lol? Now " Charter Member" is back!
I guess I ll put down this joint, pour out the " moonshine" , and step away from the computer for a while, ha. That was weird!

The two posts quoted here express perfectly why some of us are not in favor of a " rating system" I d really love this kind of competition to depart from the board completely , and truly believe a rating system might discourage new or shy members from joining in fully--at least for awhile.
As to names like " Charter Member< " I am not sure. Perhaps it would be enough to keep the dates we joined and let it go at that? The more equal we all are, the more warm and welcome new members will feel.
New members are the lifeblood of any good net forum if it wants to remain fresh and strong. (I already know how gene feels about The Planning Room, how fond Jeffrey is of nametags, the adventures of Tracy s dead horse [;)], how Carol loves " Poppy" and her horse, what drum my sister Toni marches/dances to, how Al likes to eat, and how Bikolee feels about eminem.) What I want to learn now is how newer people feel about things.
moderator1It s kind of six of one..half a dozen the other when it comes to the muffins thing. As far as the charter member tag?...I ve been called much worse.
moderator1I would like to vote yes, and no.
I d like to see how long one s been a member and maybe how many posts one has made but the icon thing I would not miss.
moderator1Tammy, I recently discovered that no matter what is listed (or not listed) under the member s name in their " frontpage" posts, THE TOTAL NUMBER of their posts is listed in their PROFILE[:)][:)][:)]
moderator1I thought the pu s were cool. Can t see any harm in having a rating system. It s not like you win/lose anything. If someone feels the need to post a " got me another whatever" , oh well. I ll prob do it also [:D]. Gotta admit, some were pretty good attention getters.
Cheers
moderator1Now I know what those little pop-ups were for. Shy Suzie
moderator1Well, Y know, I probably had quite a few of those little guys behind my SN too, but to be honest with you, I don t remember how many. I never really paid attention to them, because I didn t care if they were there or not. And if anyone were to get the idea that I might have more good advice to give just because I had lots of little PU s, well, get real, you all know me, I had to ask lots of goofy questions to get where I was, and the reason I had to ask was not because I was wise. Having said that, I guess my vote will be for no icons for posts, just to keep us all on an even keel and so no one thinks anyone is any smarter or a better camper than anyone else.
When I work with youth groups, I always have the kids in a circle, for many and varied reasons, but the first one is that in a circle there is no first or last, no higher or lower, no one on a pedestal or at the bottom. With everyone on the same level, the ideas exchanged are fantastic. Let s just circle these wagons and get on with camping. That s all I have to say about that.
Toni
wiininkweOk is it just me or is the number of posts gone already too?
I can t see it anymore, except when I look in someone s profile.
I think that s the way it should stay. I don t need them anyway.

You dont EVER have to wear a nametag again, Jeffrey! (Dang, I miss those kissy Faces!) And I miss your
jeffrey signature, too!
moderator1I liked the pop-up icons. Better than the muffins & remember how happy I was when I got my first one. Yes, I have no life. [:D]
wiininkweWell for what it s worth I like it this way. Just because someone started earlier and likes to gab doesn t mean they re better or more special than a first time poster.
moderator1They were cute (I wouldn t mind having one added to my signature) but I was a bit intimadated when I first started lurking on the board. Anything that may have a negative side by discouraging participation is not a good idea to my mind.
Susan
moderator1 Well, I never earned a popup but I think if we all just get one like Marcy said (of course she d have an aliner[;)]) that would be good. Or, instead of giving people more popups as you post, you just change the color of the popup. Then people won t be intimidated by them. I also think we should get rid of " charter member" because anyone who joins now will not be charter. But if you look in the profiles, keep charter member.
Just my opinion. [:)]

Thanks, Susan for giving us the point of view of someone WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH IT AND REMEMBERS WHAT IT IS LIKE to look at this board for the fisrt time and see people with hundreds of posts (or more) and then has to gather up their courage to make that first post--and sometimes either just lurk--or LEAVE!

wiininkweI agree that that the " popup" icons were neat, unique and appropriate to this board, but I really didn t pay that much attention to the number that people had especially when people had more than 7 or 8. They can be intimidating to some.
Perhaps the " popup" icon can be available to be added as an emoticon. So people would be able to add them to their messages.
As for the muffins--please rid of us them.

wiininkweWhen I voted, I wasn t voting for the little popups under the names; I was voting for a thread-related rating system like they have on iRV2. 1 star-5 star system. Hmmmmmm......
But I CAN do w/o the little popups; just seems fair to all; " level playing field" like NightOwl suggested. JMO. [;)]
wiininkwe
In the short time I ve been a member, I ve seen no good reason for having the ratings. As someone above posted, spend a little time here and you pick up quickly on who has the busy fingers! Big numbers doesn t make a submission any more valuable than another. If you re dying of curiosity, go look at the poster s profile! And for those who have fallen in love with seeing the little pop-ups under their name, perhaps they can buy the icon in the PUT store!! [:D]
wiininkweI agree with goose. The value is in the post. I don t care if you got 5 or 500. Who needs it?
wiininkweI kind of liked the pop-ups. I find it hard to believe that there are very many people who are so shy that it would hinder them from posting. I don t think that I ever posted to gain another PU icon. The ribbing was fun and good natured when someone posted a gotcha post to announce that they had gained another PU level. I enjoyed it, but if it hinders anyone from joining in the fun, then....
wiininkweI d like to exchange my muffins (if that is what those yellow things under my name is) for the little pop-ups. It dosen t matter to me how many times people post, but as long as we are using the yellow things they might as well be cute.

Mike, those of us who are not in favor off the rating system have used many more words expressing our reasons but you have said it best of all and in very few words. THANKS! [:D]
For those who loved having the little popup icons----why not give EVERYONE five, all in the same color and let it go at that. ( I dont mind the popups themselves, I just dont like them when they are used to make someone look more " important" or experienced than someone else. )
This is a new board, a whole new world, I d like to see us leave behind some of the less inviting traditions of the old one just as we have left behind the trolls and troublemakers.[:)] We need unification, not competition!
OKay, I have beaten this horse (forgive me, old timers) several times now in this thread so this will be my last comment on the subject, but I am glad--no matter what happens--to see that I am not alone in thinking a ratings system does not build " community"
moderator1I voted no rating system. However, I do think it would be fun to have a reward " popup" icon after a few posts - Muffins dont do a thing for me. Say 25 to 50 posts gets you a 1 and only popup! or - a long, long time before anymore popups!
NightOwlOK folks. Get off your duff and vote! We have 309 registered members, and only 131 have voted. That s only 42%.

And if it looked like a Florida election, 38 of the 400 votes would be missing, and we d be going to court to see if the 19 with frayed edges still counted!! [:D]
NightOwlI voted the " don t care" ticket because I really don t care. I do think, however, that the " Charter Member" should stay, but that is just IMHO and nothing else, and I do look to see where the " poster" is from. But then we sometimes carry it a little too far and post all the many, ad nausem, details about ourselves such as how many kids, grandkids we have and when they were born and what sex, if any, how many cats, dogs, hampsters, cars, trucks, boats, we have, etc., etc. Hey, even that may be intimidating to those who are not so well equipped. What it boils down to is that no matter what we say, what is posted in that left hand column, what is in our signature or profile, what we call ourselves...somebody will take offense at it and someone may even take their ball and go home. Can t please everyone. My suggestion - don t sweat the petty stuff (and this seems to be on the petty side) and, of course, don t pet the sweaty stuff.
Well, I m not going to sweat it one way or another as long as I can find on the forum what I signed on for: good fellowship, information, a little humor, and a lot of help.
And to all a good night!
NightOwlVoted " don t care" . But now I got a headache from staring at those muffin thingies - I kept seeing puffy stars instead. So, if we have to have them could they be switched to popups so I stop seeing stars and everyone else stops being hungry?
BTW, what are they for? I haven t posted much yet but have 2 like everyone else?
moderator1I like being identified as a charter member--I m proud that I (and all of you charter members as well) were willing and/or able to support Dave and PUT when he needed us. The muffins only make me hungry so I say no to them.[;)]
moderator1I ll be here regardless..... However, I voted " No" on the Muffins. I saw new people come on the old PUT forum and reply to every topic, (including pop-ups for sale) just to get their numbers up and get a camper under their name. Atleast that s what it looked like to me. I think " Charter member" and/or the date of membership is enough to show who has been around and (likely) more knowledgable. The muffins do more to cause over activity. Besides, the muffins are a little strange looking.... atleast the campers looked cool!!!!
moderator1One more quick thought..... I think getting rid of the muffins will go a long way to slow down the use of the terms
Quotenewbies or lurkers
.
We will still know who the " newbies" are. But it will be harder to tag " Lurkers" because they don t have 20 muffins after their name.
Somehow I don t think that those terms encourage conversation from the new people or the silent. Just a thought. [;)]
NightOwlWell, after a week and about a 50% voter turnout I guess it s time to lock this one up. It appears that the vast majority like things the way we have them set up now, no rating system.
We will look at trying to replace the muffin (OK, actually it s a flattened star) with a pop up.
