This is a continuation of a very lively discussion we were having about taste in music started by BIKOLEE shortly before the old board died. I hope we will get lots of responses here about what people like to listen to. My taste in music was getting stale and I love learning about new artists or groups.
I have recently discovered a really great Texas band called " Widespread Panic" There doesnt seem to be a pretty face among them, but are they ever good!! I dont even know any of their names, but caught them in concert on DSS. While I do catch an echo now and then of early Stones, they remind me of the good, gritty down-to-earth stuff CCR used to do, and now and then a hint of Mose Allison comes to mind. Fantastic guitar work and FINE keyboard!! (Geeze, some of Elton John s wild " southern gospel" piano pounding came out of this group.)
Hey, BIKOLEE, do you know these guys? What can anyone tell me about them? How did I miss them until now? (Guess I dont get out enough [:o])
NightOwlOK, here s an artist that I ve been listening to for the past two years, Martin Sexton. You can listen to a sample of his music at this link:

Right on! I had to get the CD as well and rumor has it there is a sequal to that movie coming soon. The Dixie Chick s new CD Home has a strong O Brother flavour to it as well. Just the other night I was watching some 80 year old on PBS who I m sure was a kid when that mountain/folk/country/twangy music or what ever the heck it is was being developed. I love it!
fivegonefishingI try not omit any type of genre. I love country, jazz, soul, pop, classical, instrumental, folk, rock, rap, disco, the irish rovers, punk, opera, circ du solie, christmas, storey telling (remember Red Sovien) what ever.
Garth, Patsy and Bach have all brought tears to my eyes.
NightOwlI don t limit my music experiences... I listen to what s playing on the radio!

I have pretty eclectic taste in music too. I love the music from the Cirque Du Soleil. Nothing beats experiencing it live but listening to the music is the next best thing. I also love Irish rock, latin rock and a lot of the new stuff they play on the pop/rock stations. During our New Years camping trip I listened to: Shakira, Fiona Apple, Crash Test Dummies, Dave Matthews and Paula Cole.
NightOwlI love classic and new hard rock, zydeco (lets go buckwheat!!!), blue grass, classic, folk...actually what i should say is i can t stand easy listening, rap, and most punk....
my favorite guitarest are/where and in order eric claptin, chet atkins, mark knoffler, jeff beck, eddy van halen

bikoleeWow, a Pastor who likes heavy metal and someone who actually remembers Donnie Iris (and his song)...
I knew I liked campers for a reason!
BTW, I also agree on the " Brother" soundtrack... DW loves it.
Joe
NightOwlI guess I m from the old school. I really like Foreigner, Elton John, Eagles and Journey! Oh yea....Seals and Croft, Bread & I like the Top 40 that s out now. Just not into rap. (40 years and I ll never grow up!)
bikoleeMostly country, although, I do enjoy the good old disco days, soft rock, anything but rap and heavy metal.
bikoleeI don t really have a favorite,my taste in music is wide and varied from classical to hard rock. The only kind of music I don t like is Rap. I do have a large collection of Olides [:)]
Favorite Christmas music is TransSiberian Orchestra, and Manheim Steamroller.
bikoleeLike many of you, I enjoy a variety of music as well. I will listen to everything from country to soft rock, to rock, to pop.... Lately, I ve been into a lot of 80 s tunes. There s one station here that plays them on the radio and I listen to it all the time.
Among some of the CD s I have.....
The Dixie Chicks, Alabama, Brooks and Dunn, Dance hits from the 80 s (love that one....hehe), Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Celine Dion (I love her voice), and Bob Seger (I like him a lot too). I do like some hard rock, but I don t have a favorite band....just particular songs that I like and I have a variety of those recorded as well.
I DO prefer music that has words, so that leaves out Classical and most Jazz type music.. and I CAN T STAND Rap....... Yuchhhhhhhhh!!
bikoleebikolee, Just say no to Rap. Shania, Faith are more for the looks, also I remember when The Dixie Chicks were playing on the street in Deep Ellum(Dallas). That was before they have the lead singer they have now.
I personally like local bands and not alot of the manufactured music you here on the radio. Oh I go to Luckenbach every year to hear some great music.
bikoleeMy favorite is Rock - hard Rock, soft Rock, Metal - any kind, old or new. There s some really good new stuff out there now - Nickleback is every bit as good (even better than some) as the stuff I listened to as a teen. Geez, am I ever going to grow up?!
I also like country, old and new (DH and I graduated from a small High School with Wade Hayes, so I gotta like Country!), but must agree that I can live without Shania and Faith Hill.
No cRap music, though. That s about the only thing I m not a big fan of...
bikoleeTop 40, Bluegrass, Classical, Pop, Disco, Old Rap, Celtic, I have been told I have very messed up music taste.
bikoleeNo favorite type of music here. Like to listen to a bit of everything. Different moods/different music. My 2 favorite artists are James Taylor and Rod Stewart. Oh, also gotta include Dinah Washington in my favorites list. DH is a serious Rush fan.
NightOwlNot in any specific order...
Dixie Chicks
Lyell Lovett
Toby Keith
Beatles
Paul Simon
Harry Nillson
Bare Naked Ladies
Red Hot Chili Peppers
" O Brother where art thou" soundtrack
Garth Brooks
DW would omit the Red Hot Chili Peppers and add Cat Stevens... but otherwise the list would be the same. These are the artists whos CDs get played most often
bikoleeI was just admiring all the different tastes and for some reason it brought to me thinking about the concerts I ve seen. That really shows how eclectic my taste is. I don t go as often as I would like, but I have seen:
Doug and the Slugs
Rolling Stones
Don Maclean
Bette Midler
Ann Murray
Rush
Ozzy Osbourn
Ella Fitzgerald
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Manhatten Transfer
Canada Brass Quartet
Patsy Cline played by Gail Bliss
Circus Du Soleil
Countless Local Talent
and Barney Live
My dh s favourite music would be David Wilcox, Stompin Tom Connors and The Dixie Chic s
bikoleeHave to admit for the most part I m a classic rock fan, Genisis, Stones, Doug and the Slugs( they put on a great live show), Rod Stewart, even Elton John. I also like the blues and am partial to Robert Cray and Etta James among others.
bikoleeWe are huge Gordon Lightfoot fans! I can t believe our two year old daughter will ask us to play Gordon! Our all time favorite is John Denver.
bikoleeClassic - particularily Bach & Mozart
Country - all
Contemporary Christian - particularily Rich Mullins and Michael Card
HATE PUNK, RAP and all heavy metal.
NightOwlSprintcar39 you just like to listen to the pretty ones .huh. Personally i like all music except rap and hip hop. My speakers can t take the hummph hummph of the bass sounds. But some of them are even ok. I like to listen to my scanner when i drive also and the wife and kids hate to listen to it . and i also like to listen to talk radio sometimes. So i guess it s a trade off.
CJnRaeMostly Contemporary Christian Music Especially Delirious, Rich Mullins, Newsboys, Five Iron Frenzy, Michael W. Smith, Rebecca St. James
But also like Eric Clapton old & new, CCR, Allman Brothers WITH Dickey Betts!, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, and on and on! Ditto on Oh Brother, Where art thou soundtrack!
NO RAP!
