I just got an e-mail from a new member who didn t feel comfortable starting a thread on the board. So, thought I would help him out.
What do you use under your awning?

B. It helps keep dirt out of the PU
C. It folds up small and drys pretty quick
D. water soaks up through it, so I put plastic under it if I know it is going ot rain

gsm x2OK, it s probably bad etiquette to answer your own questions, but remember, it really wasn t my question.
We started with Astroturf because it is inexpensive, green, and readily available. But it s a dirt magnet, and we hated shaking it out for storage.
We saw someone with polypropylene mats at a campground and asked about them. They had picked them up at a show. When we went to the Pomona Fairgrounds, we saw them and immediately fell in love with them. Bought a larger one that fits under our awning, and a smaller one for our table that sits next to our outside stove.
The don t pick up dirt as readily as astroturf, and when they get wet, they dry quickly so we don t have qualms about keeping them in our PU.
They seemed expensive at the time, but over time we would have spent more in replacement astroturf or other carpets.
If money were no object, I would have my helicopter deliver by 10 by 20 redwood deck with soft tub to my site so it would be available when I pulled in.

Why don t campgrounds provide a 10 X 20 Redwood (not-PC) deck with a hot-tub anyway? That would be key in site selection.

gsm x2I m on my second piece of cheap astroturf. I never really looked into anything else. The mats in gsmx2 s profile photo look nice. I m the numbskull that just throws out the old turf and buys a new piece every couple of years cause I get tired of trying to keep it clean. It s cheap, lightweight, easy to store and green.

gsm x2We use indoor/outdoor carpeting because I got tired of the strings unravelling from our old astroturf.
It lets water through for drainage but does take longer to dry.
We carry it in a 6" PVC tube which is suspended under our camper.
If I could have ANYTHING I d like one of those very fancy very pretty mats they sell at all the RV shows that would color-coordinate with my pop-up.

For the time being, we use astro turf from Home depot, rolled and bungeed on the back bumper. But I do want one or two of these, eventually

First, to get a good ground cover have you should deshnitzify. Most campgrounds are not capable of doing that.
Second, why didn t you post an answer to the question?
Third, that is the type of mat that I want to get, thanks for pointing out the photo.

gsm x2Thanks for starting this thread gsmx2 and thanks to your dw, and to all who answered. We have an RV show here next month and will be looking for them. We might as well buy one that will last in the first place and not have to wait a couple years for something to wear out.
gsm x2To the people interested in where to get these mats, we just went into CampingWorld today. THEY HAD THEM. They only have them in one size, but they do have them in different colors.

Someone asked where we keep ours. We sweep them off, fold them up, and stick them inside the popup between the lowered stove and the bench seat.

While I can t make any promises, you may want to wait a few days before rushing out and ordering one. There may be an Arvee discount soon.

gsm x2I too have one of those 9x12 woven mats. It is GREAT! Best out door covering to work with. I too can t say any thing bad about them. The price is worth it Too!
gsm x2We have the green astroturf. Home Depot sold is as boat carpetting..so I think it s the same thing. It folds up real small, easy to shake out, and I think it was like 20 bucks for it. I just wish we had a rubber pad or something to help cushion the rocks that are under it when set up.

What happened with the discussions.
We are going camping in 2 weeks, and need some sort of ground cover, so should I just go ahead and order one from Cherrybrook?
We ve seen Sammyslaves and GSMx2 s mats, and love them.
gsm x2Astroturf. It comes in green, blue, brown/tan (mine), and other colors. It is inexpensive to purchase, can be cut to the proper length, matches the camper, lightweight, rolls up to a small size, fits on the back bumper of the PU and is a dirt magnet (that s what your trying to do, keep the dirt outside of the PU).....
When we get home, I always spread it out on the driveway and hose it off with the garden hose. It comes clean and dries quickly. If money were no object, I d still use the astroturf, but maybe a better grade than my cheapie...

Why: because we already had it and had stopped using it when we moved to a new house.
Likes: It helps keep dirt and gravel out of the PU. The kids have fun playing on it. It isn t too hard to keep clean. Fits easily into the storage box.
Dislikes: if it rains , it gets soaked and can take a couple days to dry.
$$ no object: No clue what else we d use. Never really gave it much thought.

We use a mat from rvmat.com
We used cheap astro-turf type things for a couple of years but found they fell apart & held too much dirt & moisture. This one doesn t get so dirty & water generally isn t a problem. I also liked the variety of colors & styles as well as the custom fit.
We ve had the new mat for one season & have been very happy with it. Only drawback I ve found is that it can sometimes be a little bit slippery after a downpour.
If $$ were no object - I d get the same thing again.
Wish it were camping season!
