Title: Fire Starting Marvel
Post by: Peter and Sue on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
 Hi everybody-
I got a really great, useful present for Christmas (can I be PC and say that?)!
It s called the Camp s Handheld Tornado  from [link=http://www.restorationhardware.com]Restoration Hardware[/link] and has model #2202.0115.  It sells for about $29.  I used it on a fireplace fire and I was amazed at the amount of air it put out.
I have been looking for something to get a fire started and re-started ever since I started camping.  I ve used Boy Scout Magic Water (Fire Starter), Frisbees, pieces of cardboard and lying on the ground and blowing.
I ve always wondered why there wasn t something-well there is.
This is a small, well made hand operated blower that really, really works.
      Take a look.

Peter and SueWe ve got a RW near us....I ll have to go check it out. I ve also thought about looking for some big old fashioned bellows at an antique store, but this looks like it would fit the bill.

Peter and SueHmmm... hand powered, so it s nice and quiet. Think I d stop getting those nasty looks if I started using one of these for my 6 AM fire instead of my gas-powered leaf-blower?[:D]

Cool tool! Think I m gunna get one too.

Peter and Suegreat! since i use charcoal for my small and large BBQs this will save me from having to plug in the hair dryer!

just as well it s on sale, cos shipping is $6 and they charged me $1.69 tax because they have stores in florida.   I m waiting for the local store to call me back and see if they have it in stock.

 Peter and SueGOT  EM!!

It was a 25-mile round trip (one gallon-plus of gas) and I stopped at Joann Fabrics on the way.

I saved the $6.00 shipping (times two since I bought another one for my SIL who is right now building a brick BBQ and I owe him an xmas present) and was able to get the red one.

It feels a bit weird cranking it, but I m sure it will be better than fanning with magazines or having to plug in the hair dryer.

I keep waiting for the WWII air raid siren noise to come out[:D]

Peter and SueThe easiest why to get a fire going i found is to use my propane torch. Dw gets mad at me when i use it. I was going to get a bellows. But this tornado is great. Have to order one.

Peter and SueThanks for the link. I forget about this store, since we don;t have one locally. The last time I shopped there was in Virginia, I believe.

While browsing through the sale items, I found a Celestial Seeker my DD had asked for, for Christmas. I was going to get it through another place, but they werre backordered and over $25. Restoration had them for $4.99! I also ordered a tornado. [:)]

Peter and SueSandy all you need to get is a nice 5th wheel and one of those Freightliner trucks to pull it with. Then move to St. Louis so i can borrow it when you are not using it. Thats not to much is it.

Peter and SueThanks for the heads up.  We ordered one from the website.  I just used it to make a fire in the fireplace.  Its awsum!  The long barrel allows you to direct air where you need it without over heating your hands.  Puts out much more air than a pair of bellows I used to have.

Something like this is handy to have in the event of a power failure.  Our backup heating source for the house is a woodburning stove insert in the second fireplace.  The Tornado would definitely aid in starting a fire in it.

Would have loved to have had this baby last summer when we were camping on the Cold River.  Our fire wood was wet and making a very smokey fire.  A little air from the Tornado would have been welcome.

Peter and SueAs a gearhead, I am used to (and even expect) the ridicule and abuse I get when I bring out my gadgets.

Everyone " guessed"  that the Tornado was a fishing rod of sorts.

Nobody laughed when they saw how efficient it was.  The best example was when I woke up and the fire and gone out  cept one smoldering piece of wood.

I placed more wood on top and cranked that baby up.  It was amazing.  In no time I had the campfire going again.
