Is it just me or does there seem to be a true lack of knowledge about the English language on this board? Simple grammar is ground into the dust and spelling at times is almost comical. Use of two vs to vs too is almost interchangable and reading " there" when the writer obviously means " their" just grates on my nerves. Maybe I need a weekend away?
TrlrboyI see the same think too, I make too many typos as I type out of control, but people interchanging similar sounding words is weird to say the least, especially to a non native speaker.
TrlrboyOde to my spell checker

Quotejust grates on my nerves. Maybe I need a weekend away?
Maybe?....... maybe you need a weekend away? You should also get a " camping dictionary"
If we are allowed to not shave, eat burned things from a stick, sleep in trailers made partly of canvas, not shower and wear the same clothes for days on end,
I think we could probably lighten up on the spelling, here anyway.
TrlrboyWhile it may be annoying, I can see how it happens. Things that I think are NOT always things that my fingers type. They appear to have a mind of their own at times. [:@] I can also understand how confusing the English language can be. Even though English was not my first language, I never really thought about it until I ve been working with my 5YO on spelling and reading. Try explaining to a 5YO why Philadelphia starts with " PH" instead of " F" -- just to name ONE example.
That all being said, not everyone has a college degree and it may have been quite some time since High School for some of us, so give people a break. They come here for entertainment, not to be criticized. [: (]
I think you just need to get out and CAMP -- and stop worrying about the little things in life! [:D]
TrlrboyI notice the same thing, but I really hate to put someone down because of it. DH is a real sticker about things like that. He always gets his hair in a dander even though he knows what people are talking about.
I just figure lighten up --- life s too short to get upset over minor things.
AB -- love the poem
TrlrboyI the mistakes I really hate are....mine[:@]!
TrlrboySpelling and grammar on here are sometimes " sticklers" of mine, but I don t say anything, as I know some people type in a hurry, have a dog or a kid yelling or climbing on them, or some other reason causing the error. I try not to let it bother me. I really just appreciate folks coming here to meet and greet and give advice!

TrlrboyI make mistakes when my mind is ahead of my fingers. I end up with crazy variations of words I would never misspell if I were really paying attention.
But to answer your question, yes, you re too uptight IMO [;)]. So long as you can understand their point, that s what s important.
TrlrboyI ve taken several typing courses and an now up to 40 mistakes a minute. Of course being dislexic (sic) doesn t help.
TrlrboyLOL..Yes, you need to go camping more...and...Yes, it does also bug a few of us other " sticklers" ! [;)] I use to do a huge amount of editing of documents for the guys at work and now I can t read anything; book, magazine, newspaper, letter, etc. without the errors jumping out at me! I wasn t even a " real" editor, just someone who read the documents over before they went to the " official" editors so they didn t look quite so bad. <snicker> I can t imagine real editors ever reading just for fun!
Auston Boston....I have that Spell Checker Ode on my wall at work!
TrlrboyI type way too fast. I backup more than I go forward sometimes. I wrote to my boss in an email the other day (The Bureau Chief of the whole Department!). She had been gone and I wanted to talk with her about training classes. Real nice older lady...a little heavy but nothing bad. I wrote in the email, " ....I realize that your busty...." I meant to say...I realize your busy. The dang t & y are next to each other on the keyboard. I guess busty is a word cuz word checker didn t get it. Thank God she has a sense of humor!
TrlrboyI too make spelling mistakes when I type. My fingers think they know where all the keys are, but they don t. They get them mixed up sometimes. I sometimes enjoy the misspelled words.
TrlrboyI guess we need to learn how to speeel propertly.
TrlrboySpelling mistakes I over look, (I ve made my share too), What really bothers me, is the long links people post. Then I have to move sideways to read them. I wish everyone would learn how to use the link button, above and shorten them up.
TrlrboyI graduated with honors English in college and English was my SECOND language. I m a good speller. Hubby had no college and his writing is not as good as it should be. But HEY, I couldn t tell you the first thing about rewiring electrical systems, testing breakers, and doing a major tune up on a car. [:)]
Guess we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Most of us know our weaknesses, so I prefer not to point them out. [;)]
Bob, you just need to go camping again! [&:]
TrlrboyAlthough I notice other people s grammar mistakes, they don t bother me in the least. What does bother me is when I personally make the mistake. I will go back and edit an entire post if I notice a typo I made, lol.
TrlrboySometimes my typing finger just gets all ahead of itself and trips over some of the keys. Oh well, I never claimed to be an expert at anything, just know a little bit about a lot, which I ve been told is a dangerous thing. Anyway, I just want to say " Yeah, what Jeffrey said!!!!!!"

TrlrboyYou mean I don t have " edited by wahoonc...." on my signature line?[8D][&:]
Both my parents were English professors so I don t stand a chance. LOL
A lot of the time I am trying to balance a laptop on my lap...[:o] and type posts, but then again what are laptops for[:D]. If people want to spell incorrectly, let them, same for gramatical errors sometimes it makes for some real interesting reading![;)]

TrlrboyI ve had typing classes but the keys keep moving around on me. Darn things. [8D]
aw738I have suffered with both grammer and spelling problems for a long time. When I can remember to use it I have [link=http://www.iespell.com/]ieSpell - A Spell Checker for Internet Explorer[/link].
Once you install it it gives you a new right click option to check spelling in the active window. Great if you use Internet Explorer.
aw738You think it s bad now wait a few years. I was discussing this with a couple of teacher friends and both said they would give anything for at least something resembling grammer and a few words without numbers in them.
They said the shorthand slang used in instant messaging is getting so prevelant that students often hand in compositions with words like L8R.
Can t wait, a couple of years from now resumes should really generate some laughs. Of course if you re hiring they ll probably generate a few tears and a hopelessness on finding someone to hire.
aw738Yoove all convinced me that I was two pickee and ive decided to go camping four three daze nex week. Surry if I uffended any1 because of my selfishness.
On the other hand, AB s poem was hysterical.
aw738Hi am glath dat u tecided to ko campink, enjoy it well [8D][8D][8D][8D]
aw738I was an English major in college, and I used to teach English, so I tend to notice grammar and spelling mistakes a LOT! However, just as written English and spoken English are vastly different, there are times when a few mistakes are a problem, and times when they really aren t. To me, a message board is more like a conversation...more casual. I notice the mistakes but they don t bother me that much. Where they DO bother me is more formal types of communications...articles posted on websites, business letters, newspaper articles, etc.
I work in Web Sales and spend most of my time answering e-mails from customers. Our department views the e-mails we send out as business letters, so the first part of our training was on grammar. We re supposed to spellcheck and proofread every e-mail. Of course, a few mistakes get through every now and then. It really bugs me when I re-read one of my e-mails and notice an error AFTER I ve already sent it. [:o]
What is really distressing to me is the quality of the e-mails we get. I realize everyone uses shortcuts, etc., but, IMO, sending an e-mail to a business asking for information or assistance is not the same as sending a chatty little note to a friend or relative. Getting a 15-line e-mail from someone with no punctuation or capital letters is hard to read and harder to understand...and when they throw in a bunch of misspelled words, it s worse. Some of the questions are hard enough to answer as it is--when you have to spend the first five minutes trying to figure out what the question is makes it even worse.
Grammar mistakes and spelling errors on message boards don t bother me that much. Grammar mistakes and spelling errors in formal and/or business communications drive me nuts.
My other pet peeve is spelling mistakes on business marquees and signs! A local restaurant had a sign on their marquee one time that said " All coupons excepted." I spent several minutes trying to figure out what kind of policy that was, until I realized the sign should have said, " All coupons accepted" ! A convenience store where I sometimes get gas has a sign on one pump that says, " Pump #2 does not except credit cards. Sorry for the inconvience." [:@] It bothers me every time I stop there. I keep wanting to tear the sign down, take it in the store, and rewrite it to say, " Pump #2 does not ACCEPT credit cards. Sorry for the INCONVENIENCE." !! [:D]
(Had to edit it cause I overlooked a misspelled word. *blush*)
aw738Oh...back to the confusing phonetics of the English language...
I also used to teach 1st year Spanish to 9th graders. When my students would complain about Spanish being hard to pronounce, I would contradict them. Spanish has very few rules of pronunciation...any exceptions have a written accent mark. And almost all the letters always sound the same. English, on the other hand.....
Well, here s the example I always gave them (don t remember where I found it):
How would you pronounce this word?
GHOTI
Give up? Here are some hints...
The " GH" is pronounced like the " GH" in " touGH" .
The " O" is pronounced like the " O" in " wOmen" .
The " TI" is pronounced like the " TI" in " moTIon" .
Got it now??
Need another hint?
Here are some well-known phrases that use the word:
goldGHOTI
GHOTIbowl
GHOTI and chips
deep sea GHOTI-ing
GHOTI or cut bait
school of GHOTI
Still not sure? Well, on Tuesday, I went to Ripley s Aquarium of the Smokies and saw hundreds of different kinds of GHOTI!
[;)] [;)] [;)] [;)] [;)] [;)]
aw738Does any one know if there is a grammer board????
aw738What bugs me is the signs above the check-outs that say" 12 Items or less" .... correct English is " 12 Items or Fewer" , or One half cart or Less" . You get the picture.[8D][8D][8D]
aw738I used to double check my spelling, think it was right, then post it - only to see mistakes after! DH told me how to go back and edit my posts. A lot of the times it s just my mind going faster than my fingers! [;)]
Trlrboyi thing we awl tri as best we can. if the messuj gets a-cross, than thats ok, write?
mabee you do need a weak end.
aw738I still like AB s poem. LOL..reminded me of my first job using a computer to type documents instead of a typewriter (ok, so I m old! LOL) I was so thrilled to have " spell check" on the old WordPerfect and didn t bother to actually proof read the document first. My document was printed and sent out to " Headquarters Marine Crops" !
aw738When I was in high school I had an assignment in which I had to read a book that had won a Newberry (if my memory doesn t fail me) award. I just happened to be the last one to pick a book and it ended up being written like someone from where I live or even farther south of my location would speak. If you are wondering use Jeff Foxworthy as an example. I cannot believe that there is any way that book with the way it was written could have ever won an award. Needless to say I refuesed to read it.
